For full impact, commence streaming each album from midnight NY time in your local area. September 18, Day 7 - tonight we hit the most misunderstood chapter of Mariah's catalogue: Glitter. For years it was the punchline, but we know better. This is the record where she finally had zero label restrictions (the movie's another story) and just let the music and her creative juices flow. You can literally hear her laughing on every uptempo. That's freedom on tape. This was her first release on Virgin after breaking Janet's contract record with a $100M deal. Big leap, big pressure, but also a clean slate. And she made a soundtrack that doubles as one of the most fun, vocally crazy, 80s-inspired dance albums ever. Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis still call it one of the best dance records of all time. "Loverboy" was the lead. The biggest-selling song of 2001 and by now everyone knows the drama: the original Firecracker sample got snatched, so she reworked it overnight with Cameo's "Candy". We didn't hear the real version until The Rarities in 2020, and it was worth the wait. I like to stream both versions back to back, followed by the remix. If the label had sense, they would've led with "If We". That thug love duet blueprint basically set the tone for half of the 2000s. And "Lead The Way"? That vocal climax is still one of the most technically perfect and emotional moments of her career. The clip of her singing it to the point of collapse goes viral once every few years for good reason. That's not a stunt, that's her giving everything. The whole record is drenched in 80's sparkle and she was ahead of the revival by a few years. You can hear her love for Stacey Lattisaw, Kashif, Lisa Lisa... all over it. "Didn't Mean to Turn You On" is a perfect throwback including Jam & Lewis' original production. It's pure, fizzy fun and a cover Cherrelle's original, but with MC's voice wrapped around that Jam & Lewis production like silk. Then there's "All My Life", one of the most underrated tracks in her whole catalogue. The story behind it is producer Rick James apparently requested everything be white for the session: white limo, white suit, and, well... let's just say a certain extra-white powdery "accessory". The song itself is smooth and dreamy, the kind of late-night groove you want on repeat until sunrise. And shout-out to the Lambs for finally getting Glitter the respect it deserves: we pushed it to #1 on iTunes during the Caution countdown back in 2018, leading Mariah to finally allow it onto streaming. We're still waiting for the videos and singles, including all of the remixes, to get a proper release. Come on MC, come through. Can you swing it on home with a YouTube release, at least? The movie turns 24 in two days, on the 21st. On that day we will be up to The Emancipation of Mimi on the countdown. Once you've spun the album, pair director Vondie Curtis Hall's Gridlock'd (1997, starring Tupac) with Glitter for a back to back double feature. See how Hall handled grit and glamour- and how Billie Frank deserved better. So hit play and celebrate Mariah at her most unfiltered. Under the glitter there's heart, humour, and vocals for days. She tried to threaten Taylor Swift by saying, "I'm going to leak ten years of your messages if you don't stand up for me." Taylor is going to flex her empire hard. I've also been following the lawsuit, so knowing that she's preparing to clap back is exciting. I also became a fan of Scott Swift, her dad, in the process. When he heard about the threats, he immediately gave the information to the opposing team, so now they have evidence of Blake Lively's extortion attempt. I love it. It made me wish Mariah had a protective father figure like that throughout her life. Maybe she wouldn't be so damaged and wouldn't be the blow-up doll she is today, if she had consistently felt deeply loved by a father since she was a child. (Thursday 14 August 2025; 15:03)

I do find it stuck in my head and I can't shake it off, pun intended. Seriously though, I've heard the Mariah solo version too and I love the collaborations better. Also, if you're a Mariah fan, you should try to aspire like her and have thick skin. Homegirl had her family's dog poisoned, their car set on fire, got spit on the face, and had the N-word chanted at her repeatedly while being cornered. What we experience online now in 2025 is like a bite from a fire ant compared to that. She experienced real-life racism in the '70s and '80s and still managed to become the wealthiest, most successful, and most significant out of all her bullies. What's your excuse? Yet, even when she completely stopped touring, she never neglected her core fanbase. Since the 2000s, she hasn't gone more than a few years without releasing an album, and she's 83, for heaven's sake. From 1963 to 1967, and again in 1971, she was releasing two albums a year. That's dedication. It's not that Mariah's lost her artistry, her heart is just not in it anymore. She reminds me of someone who was once deeply passionate about their career but eventually became content with stepping away. And that's fine, but at least be honest about it. Rare Whenever You Call video (107,919) by Shezz from Pk I just came across this recently posted video from the Perth Butterfly concert - I don't know if it's new or been around for a while. Her voice was definitely tired and worn out but she soldiered on (98% live) and her rasp was still pretty. The climax audio transition was tough to watch - not too smooth in the early days I suppose but still a beautiful performance of an amazing song. Also she looked so gorgeous here - no frills no elaborate impractical gowns just a simple white top and a pair of jeans. (Saturday 4 January 2025; 13:04)

Album sales (107,847) by Edward from USA Mariah doesn't sell albums like she used to, and that's just the natural progression of things. No artist stays at the top forever, it's a reality of the industry and of life. Just as our generation did, every generation gravitates toward new artists who speak to their current experiences and culture. Mariah music spoke to us. The same thing happened to legends like Aretha Franklin, Barbra, and even Whitney before Mariah. They were once dominant forces, but as time passed, new stars emerged, and the spotlight shifted. Mariah's legacy is cemented though, she's one of the greatest artists of all time, with achievements that few will ever match. But today's music landscape is different. Streaming platforms have replaced physical album sales, and newer artists like Ariana Grande dominate the platforms for now. Even Ariana, as popular as she is today, likely won't hold the same position in a decade, because new artists will take center stage. Let's not be delusional and think Mariah is the "It Girl", she isn't. It's not about fading relevance, it's just evolution. Sure, album sales aren't what they used to be, but Mariah's cultural impact and artistry always keep her in the mix.
