I think Perez has been pretty nice to MC lately and Stacey, you are so right, Triumphant just feels so flat and uninspired.

Looking forward (36,109)

I feel like we can officially call Triumphant a major disappointment and disaster from looks of the charts and the majority of the reviews. Now looking forward, I can hope that Mimi and her team are putting the proper game plan in place. Also in order for this new era to be a success, Mariah must deliver better quality songs, videos, and performances. She must realize that she is cut from a different cloth compared to today's female pop stars and even though it's not fair, she has set a bar so high that when an album or song doesn't match or out perform the previous effort, it will always be deemed a flop or failure. That's just how things go in the music world and the world of Mariah Carey.

Interesting thought, Triumphant video (36,108)
by Stacey from USA
| |
|
|
I got this from another die-hard MC fan on another fan site. I think it's a deep interpretation of how a lot of us feel about the video: "Oh dear, she's like a mannequin. Honestly the more she tries to pose exactly right to cover any 'flaws', the more it looks like she has a zillion flaws to cover, when in reality she's a gorgeous woman. I wish she'd realize it and stop being afraid of imperfection." Amen.

See and Nattalie, TEOM is a perfect example of how talented MC is. That album is proof she is so talented, better than what she's done with Triumphant, IMO. I loved TEOM from first listen. I was estactic. TEOM reminded me of my favorite MC album: Daydream. My point wasn't to start a discussion of new vs old fans. We are all fans of MC. The past couple of weeks, I've been listening to MC's songs, putting togther mixes of her remixes and songs on mix CDs while I work out. This current effort falls flat for me because of what I know she is capable of producing. Even her more well known rap collabos of the past (Heartbreaker, ABMB, Crybaby, My All/Stay Awhile, etc) have that certain edge, magical quality to them that this song just lacks, IMO. It's not about me loving her older stuff vs more recent material. In each of her recent albums, I've found songs I absolutely love. In listening to her catalog as a whole of late, I know she is better than this. It's just more of the same for me, and it's not good.

Here comes Perez Hilton (36,106)

I mean, this guy is an idiot. When things are going wrong for Mimi, he would not hesitate to trash her. When things are going right, either he makes snarky comments or does not care. Another thing that irks me is this notion that Mimi has to be #1 all of the time. There are tons of artists that are her age or older who struggled to break into the Top 40, and they don't catch hell over it. Hell, MDNA is struggling on the album charts, but he won't write about that.

Special K/Triumphant (36,104)

I agree, "Triumphant" really isn't doing much at all, aside from upsetting many of her fans. Maybe, as others have said, she just put the single out because the song is important to her. Or, perhaps she's testing the waters before dropping/finishing the new album (which would be wise, I think)? I mean, let's face it, the main version of the song sucks, she's barely on it. And I have nothing against rap. I don't care what Randy Jackson (who I'm starting to hate for slowly killing Mariah's career) says "oh, when you're in the studio, you have to do what the song calls for, bla bla bla." Bullsh#%t. If you are Mariah freaking Carey, you are NOT to be featured on your own song lol. But anywho, I digress. I hope Mariah is wise and listens to her fans and makes smart choices on this upcoming album. You can only withstand so many flops (remember Janet?)... and even though we all know her albums are always filled with gems at the very least, the general public can be very fickle and unfairly harsh towards her.

I agree with you and the single is generating lots of buzz in Asia and the UK and slowly in the US charts. It's nice to see the video at around 9 on iTunes charts, at least that's what I read and it's also building on rhythmic stations. I mentioned the great song Adorn by Miguel which has actually been out for months buzzing along, but it may never cross over or even hit number one on R&B charts, but I bet it's a Grammy winner next year. The charts and great or even good songs don't always align, but Mariah is doing some good things right now in anticipationn of her new CD.

The purpose of a buzz single is to create a buzz right? Well if the single has no "buzz", then it isn't serving it's purpose.

Your Mariah Carey collection is awesome. Just thought I'd let you know. Since I'm so young, I've never seen those single covers before, so it's nice to see what was back then. And the cassest tape you had of Music Box was crazy. I can't believe people used to fast forward and rewind a whole entire tape like that. I probably would have never listened to music back then if that was the case. I understand rewinding movies, but a music tape? Please.

Firsf of all, love the new layout! Nice to see faces with names now (will get a picture up ASAP). Had some time to think about the song over the past couple of weeks and (someone mentioned it below I think) I think she released it, just because she wanted people to hear it, not to get a hit with it. Her history shows that all the songs that mean something to her (ie very close, personal lyrics) don't do well on the charts. They never have. Triumphant is a song that she more or less dedicated to Nick when he was ill and further dedicated the video to him (since he boxes). If you guys remember her GMA interview, she hinted that she was planning to release something special. Whether this song was what she was talking about I don't know, but I think she wanted to release it for some special reason. There is no logic in releasing a song, when the album is half a year away. Which makes me think that she isn't looking for a hit, she's looking to hep inspire someone who may be feeling down in the dumps. So ease off the song and see what it's really about.

Some of you are making a big deal over nothing with Triumphant. It's only a buzz single. The album isn't out for another 6-7 months depending on when in March the album is scheduled for release and if it doesn't get pushed back again. Some of you are also forgetting that radio has a major disrespect for artists after they hit age 40, especially women. If Mariah wasn't a smart business woman, she wouldn't still be in the business now.

Stacey new fan/old fan (36,097)

I wouldn't say that Stacey. I think it's all about your personal taste. Remember, I didn't care for Mariah when I first heard her. It was The Emancipation Of Mimi CD. Funny thing is, I actually used to love The Emancipation Of Mimi until I realized her true abilities. I used to listen to that album over and over again untill one day I decided to burn one of her old albums because I had low expectations for it. It was her Daydream album. After I heard the album straight through for the first time, I litterally cried. That was the day I became a fan. I threw the illegal copy away and bought her very first album and worked my way up. So no, I wouldn't say that. I love and understand rap though.

Triumphant video (36,096)

That part towards the end when Mariah starts throwing punches cracks me up. The video is alright. I didn't see anything wrong with it and I honestly don't feel like Meek is the star of the video. If Mariah would have been the boxer with diamond encrusted pink gloves and barely there short shorts (this is Mariah we're talking about) people would've ridiculed her. I think her role was good and she looked extremely hot. I swear this woman does not age. Blasting Triumphant as I type this. I still don't get why such a good song has fans so polarized.

Mariah says new songs will feel like classic Mariah songs (36,094)
by Stella from Greece

I'm not hearing classic Mariah on anything about Triumphant. One can only hope that the rest of the album isn't anything like the first single though. She also said that the album will be an eclectic mix of vocally driven ballads, mid-tempos and up-tempos. Fingers crossed she really SANG on this album.

Triumphant (Get 'Em) chart update plus bonuses (36,093)
by Rod from Philippines
| |
|
|
Triumphant (Get 'Em) re-enters the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs Chart at #67 (new peak so far) this week. It fell off the chart last week and debuted at #97 two weeks ago. That's the good news. As for the bad news, it falls off the Bubbling Under Chart (the 25-song extension to the main chart, Hot 100 Singles chart) this week. It debuted last week at #15. Bonus news: Mediabase airplay currently stands at roughly 4.6 million audience impressions. It's gaining slowly, very slowly. And 2 days into the music video world premiere, Triumphant (Get 'Em) (featuring Rick Ross & Meek Mill) rises from #865 to #437 on iTunes US. I hope airplay and downloads continue to rise as we await the first live tv performance/major promo of the song on September 5 before finally sealing the fate of this single.

Hi Stacey. I don't think you prefer her no-rapper music more because of when you became a fan. You say you became a fan in 1993 and so did I. And I love both, just MC and MC plus rappers. Which type of song I play just depends on my mood on any given day. Lol. I guess it's really just that everyone has their own unique preferences for different reasons. I personally think its possible for songs with rappers to be moving. Side Effects is an example. It was such a personal and moving song, even thought it had a rapper and it wasn't a ballad. I do also love her older stuff though. Emotions and Without You are 2 of my favourite songs ever.

Old fans vs. new fans (36,091)
by Geezy from USA by way of NYC

In my honest opinion this debate like so many other debates on this message board is null and void we can all agree to disagree. As Stacey said we are all fans no matter new or old. Me personally I am a fan from the early days and find myself more bias to Mariah's older material but I can admit I enjoy some of her recent material as well. Hell I am never ashamed to admit I am a MC loyalist but I will be honest and voice my opinion when I don't like a song, an outfit, or a video ect. We all have an opinion about something and its nothing wrong with expressing it as long as its done in a respectful manner. Good day my Archives family.

Just a thought (36,090)
by Sasha from Nomansland

I think the major problem of Mariah in her career is not her music but her image. That's why she never got the credibility she deserves and people or even fans get tired of her. Well that's just a thought. I may be wrong but that's what I feel. Triumphant is quite a nice song, I mean I heard worst from her these last years. Still waiting for something more mature though.

New Mariah (36,088)

I can admit that intially I was disappointed with the hip/hop version of "Triumphant", but after a few listens, learning the lyrics, and getting into the melody. The song is really not bad at all. It's better than half the stuff on present radio for sure. I feel apart of people's distaste for the song stems from them insisting on not liking and/or not allowing themselves to give the song a fair chance based of it not being what they wanted from MC or was expecting from her this time around. So I challenge everyone to put their bias aside and give it a faIr chance. I bet you'll like it more than before. On another note, Mariah was straight up stunningly banging in the video. Everything about her was on point. The video was a good look.

At least she isn't running around in a scantilly-clad bathing suit, lol. That concept was getting old. *sigh* This die-hard fan knows MC is capable of so much more than this. I was hoping for something more deeper than this after becoming a mom. The lyrics to the song deserve more than rappers going all over the place. Maybe it's just me. Maybe because I've been a fan since the early 90s I prefer her older material and those fans who joined up later in MC's career prefer the rappers. I'm old enough to remember the days when the music matched the deeper lyrics to give us that inspirational moment. Rappers don't give me that. MC's voice does. That's why I prefer the throwback remix to the original. I'm just not feeling this video. BTW: Some just need to stop using references like "casual fans", etc. Enough already. We all are fans of Mariah.

Mariah's single is only available to hip hop stations, it's pretty premature to call it a flop considering it was just released this past week. Out of 1200 available stations, 77 of them decided to play it early which is why she made it to #97. She shouldn't have made anything at all since her impact day didn't start until the 14th. That's actually a good thing. She's currently at #53 on the chart. You'd think a journalist would have a clue as to what they're writing about, but then again journalism's gone downhill since the 90's. Urban is the only ones who have her single, she hasn't even sent anything to pop stations yet which will probably be an edited version of 1 of the dance remixes. The video is just released and with her album not coming out until next year, she can drag this out as long as she wants. I'd think if she were looking for a hit, she'd wouldn't allow the song to be downloaded already. She made this while her husband was sick and just lost Whitney. Clearly this song has far deeper value to her than just a stab at more numbers. This woman created hits for 20 years. If she wants another #1, she knows how to get it. Sometimes a message to be heard by the masses is more important than a hollow hit. I look forward to your live performance on the 5th, Mariah. Get 'em.
