Return to roots (107,139)
by Shezz from Pk

I feel that in addition to trying to stay with the trends, she also focuses on non ballads now because of her voice. She probably does not like the fact that her voice does not have the technicalities required to pull off big ballads anymore.
Personally, a pop - disco flavoured album would suit her current voice well. Of course she will always have a ballad or two in her albums.

Ballads don't chart anymore. You only named one artist, Adele, and she is a slight exception to the rule, but it's usually just her lead singles that are successful. Her follow up singles don't do much but she still quietly sells 30 million records. Other than Adele who else is charting with ballads? Everyone on the board always complains that she needs to do something new and work with new producers and now you are saying she should go back to only doing ballads. She never stopped doing ballads. Every time her labels try to launch her albums with ballads as lead singles they flop. [Through the rain], Your [sic] Mine, and [With you] are her signature ballad style and they flopped in the [States]. Also with Boys to Men [sic], [4 seasons of loneliness] was their lead single in 97. It went to number 1 after its second week and then disappeared. It was their last number one. All other follow up singles were ballads failed to hit number one. Their 2nd single peaked at number 7 and was their last top 10 hit. Those are facts. Portrait is another excellent example. Most people felt like it was out of place on Caution and didn't really care for it, but the Hopefull Child Remix is light years better and got a lot of love from the lambs.

Auto cue (107,122)
by Shezz from Pk
| |
|
|
I think most of us like to stick the label of "lazy" on Mariah for all that we see that's not going right with her shows these days. I think something definitely has happened over the years to change her so drastically from who she was as a performer. Even though she was nowhere near her 90's performance mode, up until Caution she still put a lot of energy into her shows. The fact that she still continues to tour is her decision that I will not judge her for. It's basic demand and supply. All I'd say is yes, lose the male dancers please and get a better stylist for the shows.

Auto cue (107,121)
by Jamie from UK
| |
|
|
I'm just watching morning television here in the UK. The singer Tony Christie is on who's talking about his early signs of dementia. He's mentioning he has to now use autocue quite heavily now due to this. He always used it as most do but now relies on it.
It got me thinking about Mariah, whilst she is a lot younger than Tony, over the past couple of years she has been also relying heavily on her autocue. Is there a medical reason for this with Mariah also? I'm sure her bipolar meds don't help but she will have been on these for years since 2001 I'm sure. So now why the sudden change?

If It’s Over? (107,070)

Mariah loves it when we relate to her songs on a personal level. I don't think we collectively can relate to any song more than we can all probably relate to "If It's Over" right now. From the first word to the very last. The song just hits different now. Give it a go.

Merry Christmas (107,068)
by Edward from USA
| |
|
|
"Merry Christmas" is turning 30 this year. She should go all out with something special, especially since "All I Want for Christmas Is You" seems to have lost some of its initial momentum while other holiday songs have gained popularity. She shouldn't rest on her laurels, particularly during the season that brings her the most redvenue.
I don't know about you, but I feel a bit neglected. What's the point of keeping her core fanbase in limbo? It doesn't make sense to me. She could have released a 6-track EP without worrying about high sales. With today's technology, she doesn't even need a record label. CDs can be produced on demand now.

Back to Mariah (107,061)
by Shezz from Pk

I think that will depend on how MC16 fares. It would take something close to a miracle for it to be successful, even if it is a great album, which I have a feeling it will be.
She will keep dabbling in music, maybe not an entire album. And of course there's always the possibility of Under the Christmas Three, which might come when she's 60 now. Wow. That sounds surreal.

I feel you Robert Anthony. A lot of us outside of the US see it as a wolf in wolf's clothing vs a wolf in sheep's clothing. And your leaders affect us as well because of their foreign policies, being one of the most powerful and influential countries in the world.
Looking forward to Georgie and Mandy.

Inspirational songs (107,047)

I am not looking forward to everything that leads up to election day in November. The name calling, the political ads during primetime programming, and the uneasy political climate irritates me from September to November. I hope this Fall TV season's new shows like Poppa's House (CBS), Brillant Minds (NBC), Georgie's and Mandy's First Marriage (CBS), Happy Place (NBC), and Elsbeth (CBS) can brighten my mood this fall.

Celine, Mariah and lip synching (107,018)
by Shezz from Pk
| |
|
|
Zachariah, the adlibs she is doing are live - rest of it is something she has recorded for her live shows, raw unprocessed vocals that don't sound like studio versions so they seem more live and believable.
To the average listener they are very believable. Once you see / hear the recordings of more shows you will see how they all sound exactly the same.
I don't know if it is lack of confidence or if her voice does not have the stamina to sing 12-15 songs anymore. Which is why I'm still excited for MC16 - pieced together or controlled environments or one song at a time in her studio, she can still pull it off.

by Shezz from Pk

I am sure if we know, they all know. I want to believe it is not just laziness and that there are legitimate issues - voice and otherwise. I don't think she will ever discuss them even after she retires. I don't think she owes anybody any explanations - would I like to know? Of course. But it's never happening.
Whatever started happening with her voice in the 90s went into over drive after 2020. I still remember the energy and passion she still had when I watched her Caution tour (compared to 2024).
What she can do is hire a better stylist at least for the shows. There are clearly still tons of people who are willing to pay for her concerts - good for them and good for her. I don't watch any concert videos anymore.
So Roe is an Olivia Rodrigo fan.
I'm still waiting patiently for MC16, I know she will deliver.

I was thinking again today while I was standing in the grocery checkout line. I just wonder is it common knowledge among MC's colleagues, label executives, and radio programmers that Mariah Carey can't sing anymore. I thought about that because MC doesn't receive any offers for duets, movie songs, or TV performances anymore. Her last collaborations have been rap hooks and a JD favor for another artist. I am really worried about what MC's career will look like in 2030. That would be 40 years in the music business at 61 years old. Maybe an announcement of MC16 will be her last album and it will be a double album. That would be a great prelude something new in the TV entertainment and cosmetics industry.

What do you do for a living? (106,964)

Xavier that is so cute. My nephew is much older now. When he was 3 I got him hooked onto It's Like That. He used to call it " Thatcho Patcho". Good old days. Now he's 22 and has blocked Mariah from his mind I think.
Thanks for reminding me of the Portrait remix. Totally what I needed right now.
From the current artists, I've started taking a liking to Chapell Roan. I love some of the songs from the album and Goodluck Babe (released after the album). So much more interesting and fun than the rest of the more popular pop music made these days.
Robert Anthony I practice residential architecture and interiors, done a few commercial spaces but no schools (yet).

What do you do for a living? (106,960)

I don't even know the artists, the songs or the type of music which is listened to by youngsters here in Spain. Every now and then I happen to be with my nephew, who is 11 years old, and I have no idea of what he's singing along to. He then tells me the name of the artist or group and nothing to me.
When he was a baby, he used to sing along "Supernatural": "Our love is supernatural... ah ah ah ah...". He doesn't remember, but I got it recorded. Lol.

Vice-President Kamala Harris chose Beyonce's Freedom for her campaign song. I like it, although it is one of the songs I skipped initially on her album Lemonade. I hope MC will endorse her and write her an original song. I know she can create a fire inspirational song for her campaign.
Bring It On Home is a song that I often visit for inspiration during the school year. I am going to need it again during the new school year with 25 plus students on my caseload.

I realized that I had forgotten all about The Clark Sisters collaboration recorded July 2021. MC16 is going to have the longest recording time (2021-2025) ever for a Mariah Carey album. MC16 is rumored to have these producers and collaborations on it. Did I miss anyone?
1. The Clark Sisters 2. Daniel Moore III 3. Jermaine Dupri 4. Solange 5. Anderson Paak 6. Rae Khalil 7. Bruno Mars 8. Max Martin 9. Lucky Daye 10. Ariana Grande 11. Shakira 12. David Morales

Madonna confession (106,903)
by Shezz from Pk
| |
|
|
Same here Robert Anthony. I think Madonna was a lot of 80's lambs' first love. I too, was obsessed with Papa Don't Preach. My first favourite song ever. And then True Blue, La Isla Bonita and Like A Prayer all her 80s hits.
Then came the 90s. Enter Mariah, and by 1993 I had a new queen. I still loved some of Madonna's 90's music but she could never be my favourite again.
On another note, I miss the make up room acappella Vegas series Mariah started doing in 2019/2020 (I think) of deep cuts like Melt Away and Everything Fades Away. I'd be happy if she even got that Caution era confidence back to sing.

Madonna confession (106,902)
by Bobby A from United States
| |
|
|
I have never mentioned this before, but I was a huge Madonna fan growing up in the 80s. I was mesmerized by her style, songs, quick rise to fame, and videos. I wanted Madonna and Sean Pean to last as a married couple, but the paparazzi ruined their marriage being a young couple. They were the first paparazzi couple who were followed by the paparazzi. Papa Don't Preach is my all time favorite Madonna video. Madonna changed after their marriage did not work. Her music and style changed too. She started pushing more boundaries within society's norms. I stopped buying her albums after Like a Prayer. Erotica was not the same Madonna I liked growing up in the 80s. Thankfully, MC came along in 1990 to allow me to start new female artist collection.

Mariah's been mum of late ... oh no please no (106,879)
by Shezz from Pk

I think she's quiet because she's finishing MC16. She already celebrated the 25th anniversary of Christmas so I don't think 30 will have a big celebration lined up but I'm sure she will do something. Whether we like it or not, that is where she earns her money now. And the fact that it still goes to number 1 every year shows a large majority of the general public has come to embrace it as an annual tradition. You bring out the tree, put up the lights and you play AIWFCIY. She will do her Christmas concerts for sure. I do believe she is going to focus on non Christmas projects in the near future as well though.

I realize MC has been silent. Then I realized this is Merry Christmas 30. Please no. I can't take any more promotion of that song. I can't take any more versions of that song. I can't take any more anecdotes about that song. Even the public makes jokes that it's overexposed. Longtime fans know when it's quiet she's working on something. I already feel she's narrowing her legacy to being a whistling Christmas act. Didn't we just get an anniversary edition with the nutcracker whistles? Oh no. The thought of an extra, extra festive AIWFCIY makes me wanna stop taking my lithium and date Charlie Sheen.

Those four would have been amazing single choices. That Chick really deserved to shine. Was the miscarriage after IBYLT was released? That’s when she basically stopped all promo after the VMA Japan performance which was one of her best during that era. I hope MC16 is as fun and varied as E=MC2. It had it all - pop, reggae, disco, RnB and ballads.

I'll be Loving U Long Time is such an amazing song. They didn't need to add T.I on the single release and video. Bye Bye was a poor 2nd single choice. It should have been all upbeat summer singles; TMB, IBLULT, Migrate and I'm That Chick should have been the singles. All fun, summer, breezy, pure-fun-Riah. All four videos could also have been a 4 part story, much like ILT and WBT followed a story, all four videos telling a story would have been epic.

May Céline inspire Mariah? (106,859)
by Shezz from Pk

I agree on some points for sure. It is a business after all. Maybe she wanted to share her story with the world, maybe her label/company pressured her to. No doubt it will benefit her career somewhat, whatever the underlying motive was. The fact that she wanted cameras to capture her suffering. Hmm. Mariah would never do that for sure. All the best to Celine though, I hope she recovers fully and tours again soon.

I'm sorry I'm not ashamed to have said that, I love Celine and I never said it wasn't awful what she's been through. It's a terrible disease and I can't imagine how it's been for her. However let's be realistic, this is the entertainment industry and where's there's money to be made the industry and its stars will make money out of such things. That's not me taking away from her illness as you think I am. I'm just stating a fact. Could Celine have chosen just to get better and not even mention about her voice then just release a new album, absolutely. Or does she document her whole experience and make money off it, then release an album and make double the money, course she will. She's a business woman at the end of the day. It's heartbreaking what she has been through and wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy. So don't tell me I'm being callous when you don't even know me.

I hadn't heard of him before. Nice. I think MC has recorded a lot of different styles of music in the last few years from contemporary rnb to pop to dance and disco. It'll be interesting to see if she ends up with a varied album or commits to one particular style. Rumours are that Ariana has put her in touch with Max Martin and they have also recorded. I hope we get an original song this year, even if the album is released next year. It's funny how Christmas is her most popular time but also restricts her for a few months.

May Céline inspire Mariah? (106,843)
by Shezz from Pk

I agree. Mariah and Celine are two very very different people. Mariah is way too guarded and very insecure to let go of her armour. Celine is a performer, that is her essence. Mariah is a creator. Yes it would make her more relatable perhaps to some but she will never open herself up to the ridicule and public shaming that will come with it. I think she deals with enough already. Celine is hungry to be the people's princess. Mariah is not. She is fine doing what she's doing. She doesn't want to sell out stadiums anymore like she did in the 90s. She's happy with theaters and the exponential success she gets during Christmas in between. As far as I know, Celine never said she turned to partial lipping to deal with her issues. She just said she could not sing as well. Those are two very different things. Randy, as beautiful as it may be, I think it's too late for Mariah to learn an instrument. It's clearly never been a priority for her. People still fill up her concerts, good for her and good for the people who enjoy it. I still have high hopes for MC16. I don't think she will suddenly change her style and start making Barbera [sic] Streisand like music. She will make the music that she enjoys. I hope it's something we will all love.

The way Taylor Swift is going, her momentum and her die hard fan base (that buys half a dozen version of her albums and singles with the slightest variations) she seems to be a hot contender to take over MC's number 1s tally (now at 12). With the chart rules as they are now, it is not as important for the entire general audience to love a song for it to go to number 1. Swifties alone are enough to make her new songs debut at n1 - which used to be such a big feat in the 90s - case in point Fortnight. It's not a great song. 3-4 more albums and she will sadly cross MC's tally and she churns out an album a year.MC's number 1s are a great accomplishment no matter who finds them forgettable and who finds them memorable. I hope she gets to keep it. She loves the title and as a long time fan I love it too. Previously Rihanna was hot on her heels but then she decided to go an extended hiatus.

Hey C, Mariah Carey has 19 number 1 hits (106,788)

For arguments sake, which of these "new girls" is a true contender for 20 number 1 hits? Since it's such a possibility there should be at least several answers. I'll wait. Don't you guys think that if it was that easy to obtain it, everyone would have multiple number 1 hits? At least use a possible real life situation if you're going to start an argument. I'm sorry but you're coming across as painfully young and naive. Furthermore, I am not here to defend my loyalty and love for the one and only Mariah Carey to you or anyone else. If you don't like it, don't read my posts. There's some posts I scroll right on by when I see the name. I don't stop to ask dumb questions. All dumb questions will be met with stupid answers. I guarantee it.

The Boy Is Mine 2.0 (106,772)

Yes she would have sounded so good on this remix indeed. I think Ariana's team learned from their previous mistake and released it soon. Is it the exact same though or are there different lyrics/verses?

The remix was such a a good one. I didn't expect Mariah to be on a second remix on the same album ofcourse but I wish instead of YAR, she was on this one. She also released the remix for this so soon after the OG, whereas YAR had a gap.

That picture looks like her Victoria Secret shoot from last Christmas. They’re just saying what Mariah said herself. Album coming soon.

I was scrolling [through] Facebook. A page called Popwave had a post that stated Mariah Carey's album is coming soon. However, there's no article or anything. It is a picture I've never seen before. Anyone wanna tell me is that clickbait?

Tiny Desk (106,756)

I think that is C's well informed opinion based on the last few years' live performances.
She would have nothing here to fall back on, no backing tracks, no play backs and if the last couple of years have showed us anything it's that MC won't perform without them.
Although I 100 percent believe she is capable of giving us a great Tiny Desk performance similar to what she did with Jimmy Fallon for AIWFCIY and the piano impromptu performance. I don't think she's not in good voice, she has lost the confidence in herself and her voice even though she has shown us flashes of it from time to time. Maybe she feels she can't do it at a stretch. It's still a mystery what happens to her during live performances. Maybe it's the perfectionist in her that doesn't want her audience to hear anything off.

@C, why do you say no that MC shouldn't do the Tiny Desk?

Spring or fall album release preference (106,737)

The insider account on X. Though of course it cannot be taken as concrete verified information. Most of the things they have said have been right so far. MC seems to be in a similar space she was during The Art of Letting Go and MIAM era. Revisiting her ideas and concept over and over. I hope she does not over think and lose the spark of spontaneity. She probably has 3 albums worth of material ready by now. So curious to hear her talk about this album and its process when it's finally done. Robert Anthony - What you seek is seeking you.
