Sad times For Mariah (107,264)
by Jamie from UK
| |
|
|
Just back from NYC this mornings and saw the news. It's very sad about Patricia and Alison, despite their differences and turbulent relationships, they are still family at the end of the day and this will hit Mariah hard. Sending her love and hope she and Morgan can settle their differences. Life is short and events like this can bring home how much we should all just get along and be nice to one another.

MC talks about a Whitney deep cut (107,208)
by Bobby A from United States

This is one of MC's favorite Whitney songs. She called it a "deep cut" in an interview that nobody talks about. MC has never mentioned Kashif before. I definitely hear Whitney's influence on There's Got To Be A Way and Someday. I wonder what a MC and Kashif duet would have sounded like in the 90s.

Christmas shows (107,177)
by Joachim Agerup Løkkevik from Norway

I attended the Charmbracelet tour in London in 2003 right before Halloween, and this year I'm actually planning on going back and see her Christmas shows
I'm currently hospitalized for depression with previous suicidal thoughts for the second time since 2009. If it hadn't been for my mobile phone and YouTube and the existence of Mariah Carey, I wouldn't have survived. I have to thank Mariah again for saving my life, thank you Mariah.

Maybe she got emotional about the lyrics and what she's going through right now. Being stuffed in a size 6 gown, being scrutinized every syllable for lip syncing since she can't tell us what happened in 1997, being in the desert when she'd rather be poolside writing songs for other artists, since she doesn't wanna have to go the through promotion or the live performing that comes with recording her own music. That story was overblown and I can't believe I wasted the board's time digging into it. But thank you Robert.

Seriously so sad the times we live in. I remember growing up in the 80s and 90s. Life was so simple. Kids had to get creative, use their imaginations to have fun. We rode bikes. We used the street light to tell us it was time to come inside. I guess I'm a fan of the 90s because there was talent on the radio, not just Mariah. Real talent not needing technology to do the work due them. Toward the end of the decade, things began to change. Plus, I remember in the 90s there was music for everyone. Grunge. Pop. R&B. Gangsta Rap. Everyone had something. Anyway, I hope MC returns to her 90s roots with an updated current twist. If that never happens, I still have a lot of MC music to listen to over and over again.

New interview (107,149)
by Jamie from UK
| |
|
|
Very cool interview, she seems really relaxed. Got my thinking when she said she's eternally 12, I still think something serious happened to her when Alison left her in that room with a guy at 12. I remember reading it in the book at the time and thinking more happened than she's letting on. Maybe that's why she says she's eternally 12, maybe she preferred life before something happened to her that scarred her for life. I got severe depression at the age of 19 from something I wasn't fully ready for at the time and I often think about and get feelings of when I was care free and not susceptible to mood changes and anxiety, and didn't have to think about how I'm feeling. So I can relate in some way. That's probably why I'm so obsessed with the 90's.

New interview (107,146)
by Mimi L. from Empower Your Highlighter
| |
|
|
Mariah looks absolutely stunning in this new interview. She looks gorgeous although a little stiff but overall it was a good interview. The interviewer was respectful and did her research. The interviewer's energy got Mariah to relax which is nice. I think she saw us crying over her saying she will release an album "soon" lol so she said she won't use that word. She says she's working on new material but Mimi come on, by the time you will release it the "trend" will probably be backdated. Just give us what you did so far. She also said she's working on multiple projects , one of which maybe a musical. While I love that the woman's still working hard I wonder how this is impacting her focus on music.

Well, that's your opinion. And that's fine. But for my musical taste "You're mine" and "With you" are no typical ballads, just slow songs. "Trough the rain" is a ballad and even if it wasn't a huge hit, I love that song and "Portrait" too. Why should we fans have all the same taste? As I said, I understand you. You want something different. But Mariah isn't a legend because of "Caution" or because of new producers. She climbed the music olymp because of her soulful songs and up-tempos with her signature sound like "Dreamlover" and "Fantasy". I will stay excited for whatever will come next, but I still believe that a good ballad could chart nowadays. The world could need a good one more than ever. I listenend to Whitney's "One moment in time" today because of the olympics. Very uplifting.

Again you're missing the point, none of us are saying she has to chart, we just want good quality songs. Through The Rain was due to exceptional circumstances. Mariah had lost her crown at that point plus she didn't sing in full voice for the majority of it. You're Mine was released in 2014 and was her first song to chart on the Hot 100 since 2009 and With You peaked at number 7 on the adult contemporary chart, her highest in several years as a solo artist at that time. You said Adult Contemporary is dead, clearly not. She's never gonna hit the heights of her past career but there are two examples of the only two songs (none holiday) that have even charted, and guess what they are: both ballads. I rest my case

Ballads don't chart anymore. You only named one artist, Adele, and she is a slight exception to the rule, but it's usually just her lead singles that are successful. Her follow up singles don't do much but she still quietly sells 30 million records. Other than Adele who else is charting with ballads? Everyone on the board always complains that she needs to do something new and work with new producers and now you are saying she should go back to only doing ballads. She never stopped doing ballads. Every time her labels try to launch her albums with ballads as lead singles they flop. [Through the rain], Your [sic] Mine, and [With you] are her signature ballad style and they flopped in the [States]. Also with Boys to Men [sic], [4 seasons of loneliness] was their lead single in 97. It went to number 1 after its second week and then disappeared. It was their last number one. All other follow up singles were ballads failed to hit number one. Their 2nd single peaked at number 7 and was their last top 10 hit. Those are facts. Portrait is another excellent example. Most people felt like it was out of place on Caution and didn't really care for it, but the Hopefull Child Remix is light years better and got a lot of love from the lambs.

[You're] missing the point, ballads is what she was known for, added with a few uptempos. At this point in her career I think it would be great for her to just give her loyal fans what they want and what they fell in love with. Sometimes artists loose their creativity by constantly trying to stay on trend instead of just doing music that works for them and not caring about chart positions. A strong solid album in her signature style would be far better than trying to make something to appeal to today's trends. She's been a trend setter most of her career and it's time to return to basics and give us strong soulful music fitting to her and her current age. No body wants a repeat of the I Don't video.

Please no more ballads. Her discography has way too many as it is. Since the 2000s when they've tried to launch Mariah albums with a ballad and they all flopped (TTR, YM, and WY). Ballads do not chart anymore. People these days want bops, not ballads. They launched Caution with With You and the label only sent it to adult ac and urban ac. They didn't even bother to send it to major radio formats because they knew no one would play it. They figured they could get an Adult Comtempory hit and it didn't even top the formats it was sent to. AC was popular in the early 90s and as the 90s progressed, less and less ballads topped the charts. That's why acts like Boys II Men flopped 97 onwards as the continued to release ballads as singles instead of getting with the times and incorporating hip hop and uptempos. She needs to do something she has never done and that's an all up tempo album. All of her uptempos have traditionally stayed at the top longer than her ballads as they usually came and went. Her uptempo remixes for [Anytime you need a friend] were gaining traction in the UK but the label didn't support those remixes because they didn't want her seen as a disco diva. I think she could have sold more units of Music Box had the label released more uptempos. Anytime You Need a Friend and Without You are some of her best ballads and they failed to hit #1 but Dreamlover topped the charts for 8 consecutive weeks.

Great thoughts Jamie. For the post I would give you hundreds thumbs up. "Give us back that Soul influenced, Gospel loving Mariah that we knew and mix it with some RnB and you will have some happy lambs." I would be very happy with it. I listened to "MIAMTEC" yesterday, somehow it is my least favourite album by Mariah. Also I love "Make it look good", "The art of letting go" and "Meteorite". But "Emotions" and "Music Box" are outstanding and unmatched until today. But I do believe Mariah will surprise us all, maybe next year. I hope so.

I think most of us like to stick the label of "lazy" on Mariah for all that we see that's not going right with her shows these days. I think something definitely has happened over the years to change her so drastically from who she was as a performer. Even though she was nowhere near her 90's performance mode, up until Caution she still put a lot of energy into her shows. The fact that she still continues to tour is her decision that I will not judge her for. It's basic demand and supply. All I'd say is yes, lose the male dancers please and get a better stylist for the shows.

I'm just watching morning television here in the UK. The singer Tony Christie is on who's talking about his early signs of dementia. He's mentioning he has to now use autocue quite heavily now due to this. He always used it as most do but now relies on it.
It got me thinking about Mariah, whilst she is a lot younger than Tony, over the past couple of years she has been also relying heavily on her autocue. Is there a medical reason for this with Mariah also? I'm sure her bipolar meds don't help but she will have been on these for years since 2001 I'm sure. So now why the sudden change?

I was just listening to Music Box and Emotions in the gym, and it got me thinking why Mariah never returned to doing a mainly ballad album with a few uptempo numbers. Yes she likes RnB but that doesn't mean it has to be your main focus for the rest of your career. Those types of albums worked for her and it's a shame she got stuck in the same RnB vibe for so long. Going back to a ballad album and then next album after that could have been more RnB. Do you think it's more to do with proving to Tommy that she can make it no matter what? I just think it would have been nice for her to experiment a bit more over the years, show us she's still got that soul sound she had on Emotions and the heart wrenching lyrics of Music Box. Just seems to me she made up her mind to break away from what she was and take a completely new direction and leave her core fan base behind. I'm grateful for the music we've had over the years but it would have been nice and I think beneficial to her career/likability with the general public had she not complete abandoned the image and music she was most famous for. Give us back that Soul influenced, Gospel loving Mariah that we knew and mix it with some RnB and you will have some happy lambs. I get she was affected by Tommy but that was 28 years ago now. Yes she's had some great success since but the diva show and lackluster songs are not working for her anymore. Surely she must see that. She always reflects on the great early days of her career in a positive way now, she needs to dig deep into herself and bring out the caring likeable lady she once was.

I have to wonder what kind of financial status these artists are in because they clearly don't want to tour. Even Michael Jackson said he hated touring. But for Mariah, who looks stunning this go round, it's clear she doesn't want to sing. At least not outside of a studio. Nor does she want to be on stage. The acronym MC has turned into Model Checked-out. All rehearsals are hair, makeup and wardrobe. Now I know everyone says she's worth $250 million+ but that doesn't translate to cash on hand. And she has to pay for upkeep on the NYC apartment, the rental in LA, the stylist, hairdresser, makeup artist (whom I'm sure aren't allowed other clients). Does she own a jet or lease one? She's probably in need of money to keep up this lifestyle and should start stripping it down. She has 500 hours of beauty school. Do your own hair and make up. Stay in hotels when you have work in LA. Fly commercial first class. Hold your own umbrella. Anita was awful on tour and Lauryn is late to every show. I know they probably need money but MC, like what is the reason to keep this up? And don't say to be with your fans. She could do book signings, conference appearances and guest stints on The Talk or start lives on TikTok or Instagram if it was to be with us.

She's never going to do that as long as she's milking the cow because she would have to admit to the gimmicks and incessant lipping. I was telling Randy the other day that I miss the old Mariah, the passionate one. She was so adorable when she was humble. But somewhere along the way, she lost herself in her diva persona, which alienated much of her fanbase too.

Dear Jamie, I hope you didn't take my post seriously. I was just playing the role of a blindly devoted dumb yass queen fan. Those are some of the ridiculous excuses that some people like to post here. We're supposed support Mariah and her with our coins and not have a say because she is Mariah Carey. The fact that she doesn't even seem to care is disrespectful to those of us who have been there with her through thick and thin.

As long as Mariah is putting out music and standing on that stage she owes everyone everything. If she isn't bothered then go and live off your back catalogue. But she is still putting herself out there, so she should be giving 100%. Celine has children also and I don't see her giving half hearted performances. When Mariah came on to the scene she was so passionate, would screw her face up on stage as long as she hit those notes and didn't care what she looked like. Now it's a case of if I look good nothing else matters. As I've said in previous posts she changed personality from 2001 and it's progressively got worse. Now I don't think even Mariah knows who she is. She needs to strip it all back get to know herself again, drop the diva act and concentrate on being an artist with passion again. And if she can't do that then step down and stop taking peoples money. Celine this weekend has proven she is a true artist, her craft is so important to her and she works at it to ensure it never falters. I don't listen to Think Twice and think where is that woman now I miss her. But I do when I listen to say Can't Let Go and that is sad. I never ever thought I would be saying these things ever. Mariah was phenomenal her voice and her whole persona was intoxicating. And as a dedicated fan I want to know what happened and I know I'm not the only one.

Mariah doesn't owe anyone anything. If she chooses to stand there and lip-sync poorly, it's up to her devoted fans if they want to pay for it and pretend she's singing. She has two young children who need her full attention, and she doesn't have time for extensive rehearsals. Caring for her babies is demanding, so don't be so judgmental. It's clear she doesn't care much, so why should you? She wants her money now, and there's nothing wrong with that. Has it occurred to you that maybe Mariah is just preserving her voice so she can still hum when she's 58? As real fans, you should buy multiple tickets and celebrate her now that she can at least still walk on stage and smile. Leave your negativity at the door, please.

Celine (106,989)
by Jamie from UK

Having watched her performance again, it is one polished and well executed performance. One thing about Celine is that she has always stayed consistent and true to herself. The Celine of the 1990's is the same Celine now. She is truly respected as an artist and still has her original fan base. I often have trouble relating to Mariah now as it's like she's a completely different person from the 1990's. That's not to say I don't like both but it's why I think she has lost a lot of her fan base and why she's not as respected as much. Celine knows her craft and what her fans want, and isn't at a point in her career where she's having to think of new styles to get peoples attention again as she already has the respect. Obviously Mariah is a different artist with a different personality but I think she could have learnt a lot from how Celine has controlled her career and her reputation.
