AIWFCIY (103,686)
by Bobby A from United States
| |
|
|
Has anyone checked out AIWFCIY's the chart section on Wikipedia lately? There are like 10 pages of chart information that AIWFCIY has made it onto. No other artist has this much chart information for one song. AIWFCIY is bigger than we know. Europe and the UK even like MC better than they did from 2007-2020.

She's checking her list - she's checking it twice? (103,685)

I have thought about her doing a grand jazzy rendition of AIWFCIY featuring Michael Litton, Dave Koz or David Sanborn with Kelly Clarkson.

I would like for her to add Dreamlover into her lists. It's midtempo, and can include some fun stage visuals. I would like it to get a revival like Fantasy. Amongst all of her pop lead singles, this seems to have been left behind because she doesn't perform it.

She's going to have to switch it up this year. There are 10 or more dates this year compared to 5 last year. This tour is going to require a more versatile set list. I would love to see a new surprise musical guest at each stop.

If Mariah had "literallly" already done what I was suggesting, I wonder what definitions of "alternating" and "interspersing" you are using?
Let's not have an argument about it. I appreciate what you are saying - there was possibly more variety than in previous Christmas shows. However, I really do mean going Christmas song, non-Christmas song, Christmas song, non-Christmas song, and so on.
Moreover, I really do think she should start lowering every song substantially in key - and by several notes. Nobody is expecting to hear her get to stratospheric heights anymore and I think even the press would cut her some slack on it for she is, after all, admired. But I think everyone would appreciate a smoother slide from lipped to non-lipped.
And she might even have more fun and not look so fraught with stage-fright?

It's 2023, Cher will not be giving Mariah competition this year lol. If I can recall, Taylor Swift and Ariana Grande were not even close to a threat when they both had Christmas songs out a few years ago. Even if AIWFCIY doesn't go back to number 1, I don't see Mariah getting upset nor should anyone else especially around Christmas time.

A record that matters (103,666)
by Andrew from the UK

Mariah Carey has spent 90 weeks at No.1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States in the last 33 years. That's 1.75 years or 1 year 9 months. So about every 19 weeks since 1990, Mariah has been at No.1 for 1 of them. That's actually incredible.

AIWFCIY 45 vinyl (103,663)
by Bobby A from United States
| |
|
|
How many of you have the AIWFCIY 45 vinyl with pop out picture design? I just remember that is one of the many AIWFCIY items for sale in her store in 2018 or 2019. The AIWFCIY CD single, cassette, 12 inch and 45 vinyl will never be produced again. They are some very rare AIWFCIY items. I bought all four of them and can only find the 45 vinyl record at moment after my last move to Texas.

Without the resurgence of AIWFCIY in 2018, so many young people would have never known this Christmas classic. What other female artist has a Christmas classic that will be her biggest income booster for years to come? If only we could get an official duet between MC and Michael Buble. I feel another huge Christmas announcement is coming soon in regarding AIWFCIY.

She said it herself on her Facebook concert promo. "Yes, the actual defrosting has begun." If she's fine with being frozen from January 2 - October 31 each year, why am I arguing for her legacy. I'll join the lambs. Yaaassss Mariah. Hit number one again. AIWFCIY is the best thing you've ever done. It's your signature song. It's the only part of your catalogue that matters. My queens slays 9 weeks every year. AIWFCIY has won 28 Grammys, gotten you into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and won you a video vanguard. Your legacy just like your voice is completely intact. How did I do?

Bobby-A: what have I told you about thinking? Don't to it to yourself. But here you may be right.
I predict Last Christmas will do very well this year on the back of the Wham anniversary and Netflix documentary - which I recommend to any and everyone.
Personally, I hitherto never clicked with the song . But I now love it because of nostalgia and a renewed love of George Michael - who I once met. Not sure if I've ever mentioned that.

Cher - Christmas (103,622)
by Bobby A from United States
| |
|
|
Yes, that is what she has named her first album in 10 years. MC is going to have some competition this year. It will be released October 20th. The guest artist list is very impressive to include Darlene Love, Cyndi Lauper, Michael Buble, Stevie Wonder, and Tyga. The first single, DJ Play A Christmas Song will drop October 6, 2023. The album cover is typical carefree Cher in bedazzled blue jeans. It seems like Cher has been studying MC and her album is destined to be a huge seller this Christmas season. Now if JD produced some tracks, then we know she is eyeing a #1 Christmas song and album.

Prisoner (103,615)

What makes this song so iconic? Is it because MC raps? Is it because of it being such outlier in her catalog before Infinity? Is it because it is MC's cheeseiest song ever? I always skipped over Prisoner because to me it doesn't go with the other songs. MC hates it too.

You got me thinking again, Edward. Wham's Last Christmas streaming numbers were exceedingly high last Christmas. Last Christmas may come close to being #1 this year too. Wouldn't it be cool if it were 4 weeks of the top two spots back and forth between the two biggest Christmas songs in the world. However, RATCT may keep Last Christmas at #3. We will have to wait and see come November 15th which song will contend with AIWFCIY for the top spot. This is going to be interesting to see what happens.

Streaming was a game changer. It has taken over radio by showing a real reflection of what's really popular. AIWFCIY is what I consider a pure number one, its position on Billboard depends on the people, not a promotional tour on radio or the record label convincing anyone. If a song is popular on streaming, radio has to pick it up. What Billboard did by changing the rules was smart and fair. If a song is the most played/heard, why should it be kept in obscurity? Changing the rules has not only benefit Mariah, she just happens to have the most popular song during the holidays, but Brenda Lee's "Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree" could break AIWFCIY record, should it hit number one anytime in the future, the song is 65 years old.

So, why did AIWFCIY become this huge Christmas phenomenon in 2019? Or was it 2018? Was it because of the Billboard rules change or release or special editions of Merry Christmas? Did Spotify help to make it a huge 60 million dollar hit?

Mariah's discography, while glorious and impressive, will eventually be in the past with those of us who have lived it as decades go by. That's why AIWFCIY is so important. AIWFCIY is bigger than Mariah herself. I doubt "I Will Always Love You", "My Heart Will On" and "Hero" will be a thing a hundred years from now. By then, she'll probably be the only diva of the past being played at Christmas time and her voice will make some people curious about her life and music.

Touch My Body had a resurgence this year on TikTok. It's A Wrap garnered some Spotify plays and an EP release because of TikTok. Fantasy saw a resurgence because of Bradley Cooper's Free Guy movie. The Roof saw a resurgence because of her duet with Brandy for MC's Masterclass segment and the 25th Anniversary of Butterfly. The youngins are getting to know Mariah because of TikTok and movies.

I must say I'm impressed with her songwriting so far out of all the new girls, she does stand out and has an uncanny ability for storytelling, that extra something that sets her apart from the rest. Her second album is surprisingly stronger than the first and that's saying a lot because that album was a smash. "Good Days" was my most played song according to Spotify last year (2022), and I know it's still gonna be at least top 5 this year - it's that good.

Whitney Houston (103,594)
by Bobby A from United States
| |

|
I have been very nostalgic this week from MC's early ballads to Toni Braxton to now Whitney Houston. I have to say love Whitney's early ballads like All At Once, Didn't We Almost Have It All, For The Love Of You, You Give Good Love, Saving All My Love, and Where Do Broken Hearts Go. I would be filled with so much joy listening to quiet storm radio in the late 80s and here a Whitney Houston ballad come on. You felt the pain and emotion in the song that she was singing about. Interpreting the emotion in a song and singing it with such conviction was Whitney's other gift. RIP Whitney.

To be honest, I don't really care about that anymore like I used to. That record will be broken eventually, especially now that anybody can debut at number one, first was Mariah, then Ariana and now Drake. What none of them has is a song like "AIWFCIY". The "OSD" record was more important to me. Once "All I Want for Christmas Is You" becomes the longest running number one single on Billboard, now, that one will be tough to break. If OSD took 16 year, that one will take decades.

Should we be worried? We went through this a few years ago with Rihanna, but she has all but retired from music. Drake is cranking out songs and albums. I can definitely lob the Mariah criticism non fans give her at him. I can't name more than two of his number ones. He is tied with Madonna and ahead of Janet, Whitney and Stevie Wonder. I like Drake but his name does not belong in the same stratosphere with any of those four.
