About Matty from Vancouver Canada:
I love music of all kinds, with R&B and pop toping my list of favourite genres. I've been a Mariah fan since Charmbraclet, there was something about that album that connects on a deep level. Other favourite albums are Glitter, Daydream, The Emancipation of Mimi, and Me. I Am Mariah.
My Favourite Mariah Songs are: The Art of Letting Go, Fantasy & Shake It Off.
My Least Favourite album is Music Box.
My most start-to-finish listened album (don't-skip-a-track albums): Emotions, Butterfly, The Emancipation of Mimi and Me. I Am Mariah: The Elusive Chanteuse.

I think it's as simple as Madonna not liking Mariah, and like you said Madonna saying Mariah can't be mentioned. Like Alicia [Keys] gets a shout out, but not Mariah. Aretha, Mariah, it would have flowed like butter to add Mariah in there. Also, I think it's fascinating that Beyoncé used this [Vogue] sample (it's a sample even though they are calling it a feature, the vocals aren't new). When Madonna is the queen of cultural appropriation, starting with when she stole the vogue concept from the underground ballroom community.

Re: Best breakup album: Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel (100,894) (100,903)

Libra, I've always wondered who Memoirs is about. E=MC2 was such a fun happy record, then she married Nick and one year later does a breakup album. I'm guessing some of the vocal cries are brought on by her recent miscarriage at the time, but to do such an amazingly sad and angry album when she was a newlywed always seemed out of step with her personal life.

What sank Charmbracelet? (100,807)
by Matty from Vancouver Canada
| |
|
|
So Charmbracelet was the album that moved the dial for me from my mom's adjacent Celine Dion/Barbra [favourite] to Mariah is [my] personal [queen]. The question is: what [sank] Charmbracelet?
[I'm] listening to it now on [vinyl] and the only reason I can think it sank was the horrible album art (the worst of all album covers she's done, I don't read what she was trying to convay), and she was introducing us, the public, to her whisper voice.
Aside from the hate in this platform has for "Boy" (which I personally loved blasting, bumping in my [parent's mini van] at 16) the tracks are solid. The songs and lyrics are beyond superior.
So what sank it musically? (Not breakdown [Glitter] sabotage, I'm talking musical.)

I would have never guessed anyone would have thought MC dislikes Daydream. It seems to me that's one of the albums she is the most proud of. It was the blueprint for Butterfly, which she adores. I could see her hating Music Box. She hates on Hero so much publicly. In concert she doesn't give it much love. I think it's either the debut or Music Box, maybe even Rainbow. I wonder how often she actually listens to that mish-mash tbh.

Thoughts: which album do you think MC dislikes (100,754)
by Matty from Vancouver Canada
| |
|

What do you guys think Mariah's least favourite album musically is? (Not commercially or public option based, just in Mariah's heart. This is all speculation for fun.) What album do you think MC personally dislikes the most out of her expansive catalog? I know her least favourite isn't Glitter, she's always trumpeted that album, along with TEOM, and of course her absolute favourite; Butterfly. We know that Butterfly is her favourite, so I thought the opposite game might be fun.

This song is a masterpiece. All the available remixes are masterpieces. MC put this out during the night of EDM mania, and was just too slow for radio at that moment in time. But if she released it during another moment in time it would have been a larger hit. It was also unfortunate that those Paparazzi photos of her filming the video hit the web, and it broke the illusion of what the official video was showing us. That bathing suit wasn't it. But again, this song is a masterpiece and MC at her best, original and remixes.

I think many of Mariah's House Mixes she did in the 90's are way closer to BMS. Meteorite is a great disco track, just like I'm That Chick, YDKWTD, etc. I'd be absolutely down for Mariah to explore a good House/Dancehall album ah La Drake's Honestly Nevermind album and the direction we can assume Bey's new album is gonna take. She sounded amazing on the Unforgettable remix which was lean hard into a dancehall vibe

Italy (100,691)
by Matty from Vancouver Canada

Lambs, Mariah just stepped back on the world stage of fashion this weekend. She stole the show in Italy, from all social media and news reports. Both looks, first with Drew, Mariah, Sharon, Helen, and then later with Kris Jenner. She glowed with empowerment and beautiful. Vogue is posting about MC. The Drew, Mariah, Sharon and Helen moment needs to be on a Vogue cover.

Hahahaha I forgot when Goat was used as a derogatory name for Mariah Lambs who were actually haters before the acronym G.O.A.T (greatest of all time) became mainstream slang in the 2000's. Lets all be real though, the true GOAT is Mariah.

I wish Mariah removed that remix before or around the same time that Celine Dion removed "I'm your Angle", which was a huge Christmas hit. R. Kelly's predatory behaviour has been a public joke, wink and nod since he married Aaliyah when she was 15. I count myself amount the ashamed who bought his music and laughed along with all the jokes and pop culture references to his behaviour. I'm the words of Macklemore's thrift shop: "Smells like R.Kelly's sheets, Pis*."

She's in on it (100,608)
by Matty from Vancouver Canada

I think the missing Lego piece for some Lambs (the group calling themselves the OG fans) is that the public loves the sunglass moments, and lighting jokes, the eye rolls and the tears every now and then etc. That's part of her signature. That's what made Mariah the Meme Queen of social media and has kept her relevant in the public discord even though she's only released three albums in the last 8 years. Non-Mariah fans that I know love that clip of her being wheeled to the stage in an office chair, and no one is laughing at her, they laugh with her. It's bloody hilarious. She knows how to play it out. She doesn't always hit her mark (ie: that radio interview she did years ago in NYC and tried her glasses bit and it didn't land), but people enjoy her and she enjoys them. Would you rather her take the Madonna route? Madonna looks like she was produced by the Mattel factory then stung with bees.

Even the biggest Queen B fans I know are talking about how meh this new song is. Maybe if Whitney sang it? If only Whitney sang it. Where's the voice? Imagine if Mariah released this as a lead single? Gasp, many on this forum would be sleeping. Look at the song credits: Bey is stacked with influence for what's been years in the making. Bey will slay because the fans have been trained.

Mental illness (100,532)
by Matty from Vancouver Canada

Just to clarify my perspective: because some of us may have a diagnosed with mental illness, does not make anyone one of us an expert. That's the thing about mental health: everyone's human experience is different; there's no single diagnosis. "We're all the same, for different reasons."

Yikes, to compare Mariah to Anna Nicole Smith indicates you know very little about Anna Nicole's life and why she walked the path she did. I'll stop here because wow, to disrespect both women at once, is a task. Howard K Steer vs. Stella. Howard was successful in his life ending destruction of a beloved women, Stella not even close.

What if that's just Mariah? (100,514)
by Matty from Vancouver Canada
| |
|
|
I love that we've been blessed with so many educated mental health illness experts on this form! Thank you for your service and insight. What if this is just Mariah? What if this is just Mariah being her true self that she continues to try and express to this day? The first time I ever saw Mariah simply, normal, free and authentically be herself was her 1999 Billboards Music Award speech. That speech was fire (after seeing Mariah do the humble basic Celine and Barbra approach for many years on award shows). I know many see Mariah's true self as the groomed women from 1988-1996. That grooming may have resulted in what many see has her golden years, the vocal goddess years. I just want to leave more room and appreciation for that 1999 Billboard Mariah, that GLADD Award Mariah, that [woman] who sang at the Grammy's in February 2006. That women who gave no [...] in 2017 to make it clear on national live television she was being made a fool in real time in that moment (uhhum Stella); and the next year, 2018, stood on that same exact stage and said [...], and blew the Times Square roof off. Let's celebrate when Mariah is Mariah, she's allowed to relax and enjoy herself and go off script as most of us do.
Side note: Mariah's speech is getting very positive media response, and the Song Writers Hall of Fame post they did about Mariah received over 27,000 like vs. Pherell or Lil' Nas (less than five hundred).

I donno, she was elated and excited for this award for months and years. She was over excited, and improving. Mariah told us at the beginning of her speech she was ignoring her prompts. She decided for an off the cuff approach. It reminds me of when she accepted the Ally GLADD Award; she just did her. The GLADD award speech was delivered and received by the community she was talking to so positively. I think she was attempting the same approach here, but staggered. I think she was in her mode of not taking her so seriously and poking fun at herself.
MC pointing out how few women are in the Songwriters Hall of Fame should be the talking point, IMO.

Re: Beyoncé album? (100,465) (100,469)
by Matty from Vancouver Canada

How is this Beyonce album a "surprise album", it's coming out in a month. That just sounds like good marketing and timing in the age of sound bites and short attention spans. Mariah released #Beautiful and then a year and a couple weeks later finally dropped the album; that isn't good timing evening in 2013/2014. Beyonce has always been loved by the media, but Beyonce also knows how to play roles and act in each era (Mariah has never released an album as Bianca, where as Beyonce played the role of Sasha Fierce for years).

This is such an odd discussion; why is Caution not a "Mariah album" according to some, because she's not belting or throwing her voice off every wall? I think it's a stunning Mariah album; songs like Giving Me Life is exactly how I like to hear Mariah use her voice. It's like saying Joanne isn't a Lady Gaga album because it's not Electric dance pop. I don't think Mariah was chasing any trends for charting with Caution, I think she was genuinely recording a sound she enjoys, with fun and vibrant album artwork. The music videos are also beautiful, classy and fun. It felt very Mariah in 2018, and could even be in 2022, the album still feels current.

Yes! When will The Roof with Brandy be released? It should have been released the moment Master class was, but sigh, the boat was missed for big impact.
Angles Advocate is going to be released. Which version, the Jump Smokers or the R&B duets? I love both versions. Looking back on it, MOAIA wasn't at all the commercial disappointment everyone said it was at the time, by 2009/2010 how people consumed music had already changed significantly.

Speaking of lawsuits (100,411)
by Matty from Vancouver Canada
| |
|
|
This lawsuit is ridiculous. How can there be a statute of limitations on sexual assault, but this person can swindle money over a song 30 years after the fact, based on a title? There's many songs called Can't Let Go, or when Ariana Grande sang "a little less conversation and a little more touch my body", does Ariana owe Elvis and Mariah money for using their lyrics in an obvious reference to their songs A Little Less Conversation and Touch My Body? Absurd.
Speaking of lawsuits, where are things sitting with Morgan and Stella's lawsuits? Anyone have details or inside info on what's going on there?

Re: Why I want another #1 (100,326) (100,330)
by Matty from Vancouver Canada

I couldn't agree more. I go back to a question I posed months back: why is Celine revered more then Mariah and sells more concerts tickets, when her early career and Mariah's are mirrored in many ways? (Celine's voice isn't nearly what it was, exactly why people complain about MC. Celine also hasn't she shown us she has a different way to use her evolved voice. Mariah adjusts, changes approach and moves with her vocal changes. Every album and live performance shows us that.) T. Swift is such an unexplained phenom to me. She can't sing, her looks is basic and basic Hollywood, her idea of feminism is her a-list girlfriend group, and she allowed to genre jump without criticism (unlike Mariah who is still asked why she left a Streisand vibe for a Brandy vibe,20 years later). I could and would go on. But I don't care for a discussion on Swift. I'll just never understand how a committee could devalue Mariah's genius by giving a performer like T. Swift all those accolades. Mariah created her own unique genre and others simply do a good version of a genre we're all comfortable and familiar with imo.
