About Matty from Vancouver Canada:
I love music of all kinds, with R&B and pop toping my list of favourite genres. I've been a Mariah fan since Charmbraclet, there was something about that album that connects on a deep level. Other favourite albums are Glitter, Daydream, The Emancipation of Mimi, and Me. I Am Mariah.
My Favourite Mariah Songs are: The Art of Letting Go, Fantasy & Shake It Off.
My Least Favourite album is Music Box.
My most start-to-finish listened album (don't-skip-a-track albums): Emotions, Butterfly, The Emancipation of Mimi and Me. I Am Mariah: The Elusive Chanteuse.

A-List never dates an A-List (100,329)
by Matty from Vancouver Canada

Hi all. If you could have your A-list Hollywood dream partner for Ms. Mariah Carey from the Hollywood Elites, who would you love to see? (For the record, I love Tanaka and think he's the best partner MC has ever had, this is just a fun convo. Don't get too lit up.) I've always wondered what would have happened if Mariah had married someone on her level after Tommy, like Victoria and David Beckham. Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell.
I wonder if Mariah dated Mark Wahlberg. They would have been so damn hot as a couple! I could also see a Keanu Reeves because he seems like he's got a great sense of humour. Leo would have been fun as well!
Who could you have seen Mimi with?

Re: The Roof (When I Feel the Need) (100,310) (100,311)

Do we think this added lyrics of "When I feel the need" was something MC was considering for the original "The Roof" or do you think she added it in 2021 with Brandy in the studio? It reminds me of the unreal and mind blowing You're Mine (Eternal) Fedde La Grand remix, where she sung "Love is like suicide". Did she intend for that line to be include in the album/single release, or was it fresh in the moment of the resung remix vocals? God bless when Mimi records new vocals for a remix, often they are stronger on the club remixes then the album version.

Re: Why Hotlanta (100,266) (100,275)

Why not? It's a huge music hub, it's a gorgeous part of your country with lush nature (and of course all politics aside, because American politics in general are a dumpster fire). There's so many creative people that live in ATL from music to film. It's also extremely inexpensive real estate and you get way more bang for your buck then NY or LA. She also wants more privacy than ever at this point in her life from what I'm getting from her. I get it, the move makes sense!

Best album addition? (100,260)
by Matty from Vancouver Canada
| |
|
|
Of all the songs on The Rarities abum, which do you think would have added the most to the experience and enjoyment of respective album it was recorded for? (No, you don't have to replace a song to add the new one from The Rarities.)
My selections in preferred album are: 1) Mesmerized (MIAM) 2) Here we go again (debut) 3) One night (Daydream)
And yes, The Rarities version of Loverboy should have been the single and album version, so it's off the table for this discussion.

Ironic (100,244)
by Matty from Vancouver Canada
| |
|
|
This whole writing credit convo is beyond ironic. The lambs (as a collective) get so frustrated that Mariah is always seen as a singer in the vain of Celine and Whitney and never recognized first as a songwriter, but when a Lamb is disappointed that Mariah isn't being credited as a songwriter, on a major platform, on a signature song of hers, everyone is telling them to move on and that it's not important. Is it no wonder the Songwriters Hall of fame took so long to acknowledge MC?

The dress bit (100,087)
by Matty from Vancouver Canada
| |
|
|
I've got to say, recreating the MTV Whitney/Mariah moment with Dua Lipa and M.T.S was pretty lame last night at the Grammy's. Either artists is even close to Mariah or Whitney's stature; and given that there was hardly any seasoned artists in attendance (it seemed like it was a newbie's night), most of the young artists probably didn't get the reference to that iconic moment in 1998.
The lack of seasoned career artists in attendance really goes to show how little people in the industry really think of the Grammy's. When Bieber is one of the most season artists in attendance, the Academy should reflect on itself. (Bonnie Raitt and Joni Mitchel were the only other reasoned artists I noticed in attendance.)

Big streaming (100,060)

Yay to the B.E. remix being number one in Canada and the USA! Odd about the streaming lack; my friend is only using Amazon Music for streaming, and he says it isn't not available on there, and to listen to it he had to YouTube it. Maybe it's not on Spotify or other streaming services?

Caution - what a hook! (99,858)
by Matty from Vancouver Canada
| |
|
|
Caution (the song) has such an amazing hook. it's so catchy. Caution woulda been a good lead single to introduce the record. It embodies the entire album. Then GTFO, then A No No as singles. Those songs embody the album IMO (even though GML is my fave on the album. 6 mins and 8 seconds is not long enough ).

Hero discussion moment (99,847)
by Matty from Vancouver Canada
| |
|
|
Caveat: This board has been sedative, and I want to have a friendly discussion, so please read my post as such. Hero annoys me as a MC fan, I've made that clear over my posts. However I one thousand percent understand why people connect and love the song. I'll speak as someone who planed their pee breaks at the five Mariah Carey concerts I've been too, to line up with when she sung Hero. For me Hero reeks of, "it could have been Celine Dion", "it could have been Deborah Cox", it could have been Gloria Estefan (wink wink). It's so far from what makes Mariah unique as an artist, so far from signature Mariah's invented genre. Can it give me chills, absolutely. That's no question, it's a stunningly executed song. That voice, that upswing, that passion. Is it Mariah creatively liberated, no. Hero could be sung and has been sung by so many. Something like Giving Me Life, or Babydoll can only be executed my Mimi.

Billboard cover - That's Iconic (99,846)
by Matty from Vancouver Canada
| |
|
|
I don't know what to say about the Billboard cover. Mariah absolutely deserves to be Billboards cover girl for this series of legendary women in music, however, whoever that is on the cover of Billboard... I don't know her. Billboard should have hired Thatsiconic.com to do the cover. I have That's Iconic's Mariah Carey Visual Compendium (horizontal print) and his art is stunning. simply gorgeous and well executed and understood. I thought the Christina Billboard cover was Gaga at first sight. The artist of these covers doesn't capture the essence of the artist. It's that simple. I'd prefer they had used the cartoon version of Mariah from the Heartbreaker video (which is still the most legit cartoon version of Mariah to date).

Aw. Thank you Carlos!
"Too Gay to function." I haven't heard that since the '90s. What year are we in? Anyway, we are aware that scent has no gender or sex right, it's simply a scent. Kinda like how pink and blue are simply colours. It's not a tricky concept. Marketing must do a real number on you.

Perfume (99,732)
by Matty from Vancouver Canada

Which of Mariah's perfumes do you like the most? I still wear "M" (this is the absolute best of her collection, and the first), Mine Again, Honey and Never Forget You. I've got the entire collection, except for Dream, That Chick, Ribbon and Gold.
Just curious if anyone else has a ranking of their favourite MC perfumes? The only other celebrity perfumes I have are a couple Beyoncé, and only wear Midnight Heat.
Fun fact: Sophia Loren's Sophia by Cotyin 1980/1981 was the first celebrity perfume; then Cher's with Uninhibited in 1987; then Elizabeth Taylor who blew the market open with Passion and White Diamonds.

It's wild to me it's a remake. I didn't know either. I have an odd love yet absolutely hate relationship with the song. Is it the JD ad-libs I hate? Is it the budget video I hate? "We don't know" (Glitter reference). But as I just listened to the original, which I love, it's very Tom Tom Club (Genius of Love) vibe, the original makes me enjoy MC's Sweetheart more. I gotta say I enjoy Rainy Davis's execution and delivery much more then what she and JD delivered.

One offs compilation album? (99,686)
by Matty from Vancouver Canada
| |
|
|
A pet peeve I have in our digital streaming era is when singles are released without a parent album. I wonder if Mariah could add the one off singles to a formal compilation of some sort. Thoughts?
It would be great to give Triumphant, I Don't, Almost Home and even The Art of Letting Go a proper home. It drives me bonkers that of all the songs on MIAM, she cut The Art of Letting go and only put it on a deluxe version (which also had the better album artwork, and I'm not talking about the paint shop version of the deluxe addition that has America the unnecessary).
Also, if Triumphant were to have stayed on MIAM as the lead single, as originally intended, how would Triumphant (single 1), #Beautiful (single 2), The Art of Letting Go (single 3), You Don't Know What to Do (final single 4) played with the public?

The belt in Fantasy is from another world, the full voice in Dreamlover, the entire reimagining of ATYNAF and "love is like suicide" added a new meaning to the song (almost like those lyrics were tooled from the OG lyrics because it's too dark).

Pw, it's not that serious, this is a discussion board, that's all. It's never that serious. I think you missed the discussion; 8 children plus 8 jobs. How precent can one human be for 16 major responsibilities? 8 of which demand an emotional presences and physical presence. It wasn't about his career hustle; it's about what a child needs from their father.

Nick's sorted relationship history (99,622)
by Matty from Vancouver Canada
| |
|
|
This [Nick] Cannon stuff is so layered. I agree it's interesting that the women post [baby] Golden need to take a hard look at their intentions. Let's also take a look at Nick's [dating] history. I mean we have Christina Milian (which seemed sincere and they were at the same level of fame at the time of their courtship), there was Nichol Scherzinger (same as Christina, they were level in fame and still are and now colleagues on the Masked Singer), [there] was Kim K, [he] was more famous than at the time, when she had her first face and was know only as Paris's [bestie], before the sex tape (full disclosure, I love Kim K, I'm stating facts). There was Chill from TLC who was his rebound from Mariah. And then [all] these models and [babies].
My personal believe is that because he's publicly struggled with a lot of health issues (lupus etc.), and you can see his health wear on him. It's almost a primal desire to spread his seed before he's not around. It's a dark view, but knowing some [people] who face their mortality have a similar need to secure their lineage. I do echoing that it's pathological, and I would suggest it's because of his thoughts about his own mortality.
I see a thick thread between the need for spreading his seed to why he feels he needs 10 jobs as once. I dunno how he can do it, and I truly don't understand why you'd want to do it. Why not focus on something meaning, instead of all the multi-task life. I dunno; X amount of jobs, and X amount of [babies] doesn't equal superiority or an exertion of masculinity, or acceptance or many needs.
Side note; I have always been team Mariah and Nick reuniting after [baby] four. I was over it.

Re: Underated? (99,595) (99,599)
by Matty from Vancouver Canada

That's very true about the one dimensional approach by Celine. To think the same women could give us Right to Dream, Shake it Off, and Hero for example. That's kind of why I'm surprised MC doesn't write more for other artists since she came plug into such a variety of genres. I wonder why Mariah's songwriting wasn't highlighted as her biggest differentiator from the very start (against Celine or Whitney). Her voice always was pushed center stage (again with the Whitney comparisons). This was in the era that female singer-songwriters were getting so much credit and exposure (ie: Jewel, Sarah Mclachlan; Annie Lennox etc. Lilith Fair festival was massive). Some people to this day are still surprised she writes her own material, and it's only been in the last 10 years or so she's being introduced as a singer songwriter. It took them long enough to get her in the Songwriters Hall of Fame imo.

That's a great point. Mariah was covered in the press as the new Whitney (much like Ariana was being touted as the New Mariah when she started), where as Celine being white and French Canadian was never compared to Whitney in that way. It's funny though because Whitney and Celine's voices have much more similar qualities then Mariah's. Celine has always been vocal about wanting to collaborate with Mariah. I wonder if Mariah ever does a duets album if she'd include her?
