Could this be reason why Never Forgot You sounds so much louder on the maxi cd single than the album version? I have always noticed that listening to the two versions.

Remastering Daydream (107,890)
by Bill from the UK
| |
|
|
What you're hearing is an example of the loudness wars: essentially mastering engineers compress recordings to make them sound louder to compete with other poorly mastered (loud) records. This trend became mainstream thanks to Oasis and how their records sounded so much louder on the radio, and due to their popularity, everyone else started doing it. Daydream is an excellently recorded and mastered album, boasting a dynamic range of 13 which is one of the highest in her catalogue. It'd be a shame to lose all those beautifully subdued and quiet moments of the record against the crescendos and climaxes. But that's the way things seem to be going. Personally the CD sounds superb and doesn't need updating in my view. But who am I?

Hello all, a flying visit to say a belated Merry Christmas and an advanced Happy New Year to you all. The new super audio CD of Merry Christmas by Mobile Fidelity sounds fantastic. If you have a decent hifi set up and a good pair of headphones, it's worth investing in, as personally I think it is the best the album has ever sounded. There's so many nuances to unearth, I find with each listen I'm discovering more about an album I thought I knew inside out. I only wish the debut, Emotions, Music Box and Daydream would get the same treatment one day. Love to you all.

Crystal ball prediction (107,875)
by Bobby A from United States

I think every morning news program played AIWFCIY in one of their segments during the last two weeks. Radio spins increased. It was playing in every department store. The tour was her biggest Christmas tour ever. The extra retail vinyl helped too. I believe something big is coming in 2025. It may not be MC16, but it will be something that will take the Lambs by surprise and snatch our pocketbooks and wallets. Lol.

I just posted about this very thing. AIWFCIY is cemented as a classic along with Nat King Cole's version of The Christmas song or Bing Crosby singing White Christmas. You can't think of Christmas without those songs. Truly amazing and just another example of MC's talent to create an original holiday song that increases in popularity 30 years after its release. Enjoy the spoils year after year.

Last Christmas (107,871)

There is no need to worry about Brenda every gaining more Spotify listeners. MC just broke another Spotify record today. MC becomes the first black female artist in history to have 100,000 million monthly Spotify listeners. I am sure Fantasy is #2 behind AIWFCIY. There has been no stopping MC during the last quarter of the year.

That might be true for Spotify US, but don't forget it's not the only metric they look at. YouTube, for example, has way more total usage with two billion users, even though it's behind Spotify and Apple in paid subscribers. Mariah's airplay and sales are much bigger than Brenda's too.

A Hozier and Mariah Carey collaboration in the vein of his song Take Me To Church could work as a lead single just to create buzz for a new album. The Spotify/video version could be with a full gospel choir. I believe MC will be thinking more out of the box in 2025. I say this because I believe new business deals will include stimpulations to work with more pop artists who could help bring in a return on the investment for releasing and promoting a new Mariah Carey album. The usual JD or Tricky R&B produced album will not cut it in 2025. MC has gone far too long releasing a new album to come back with a typical R&B album.

In my opinion, Ed's voice would blend better with Mariah's voice. I like Bruno, his pen game and delivery, but his songs usually have a moment where he goes all out vocally, and judging by the "Yes, And? Remix" vocal fiasco, I don't think Mariah's voice is in the kind of condition to match that. Ed, on the other hand, would complement her voice perfectly.

First, I would like wish everyone a Merry Christmas today. I hope your day is filled with joy and love. Love is what we need more in this world. Second, I think Mariah and Anderson make a cute couple. Maybe Anderson is the type of man MC needs in her life. Any male who can write and sing a song like Leave The Door Open understands how to get a woman's attention. Plus, I wouldn't be suprised if Anderson is helping MC create a new sound for her next album. AP has won 5 Grammys. He is a well sought out songwriter and producer. Let's hope he is the one who can finally get MC and Bruno Mars in the studio in 2025.

Album sales (107,848)
by Bobby A from United States

MC could have one last great multi-platinum seller if she recorded three type of albums.
1. a duets soul and R&B cover album - early to late 70's and early 80's 2. a jazz album 3. a pop album produced by only 3 producers - Jack Antonoff, Jacob Collier, and Andrew Watt (top 20 producers of 2024).
I hope one day she can take home multi-Grammys like she should have done in 1996. It would be somerhing that would make her so happy.

Album sales (107,847)
by Edward from USA
| |
|
|
Mariah doesn't sell albums like she used to, and that's just the natural progression of things. No artist stays at the top forever, it's a reality of the industry and of life. Just as our generation did, every generation gravitates toward new artists who speak to their current experiences and culture. Mariah music spoke to us. The same thing happened to legends like Aretha Franklin, Barbra, and even Whitney before Mariah. They were once dominant forces, but as time passed, new stars emerged, and the spotlight shifted.
Mariah's legacy is cemented though, she's one of the greatest artists of all time, with achievements that few will ever match. But today's music landscape is different. Streaming platforms have replaced physical album sales, and newer artists like Ariana Grande dominate the platforms for now. Even Ariana, as popular as she is today, likely won't hold the same position in a decade, because new artists will take center stage.
Let's not be delusional and think Mariah is the "It Girl", she isn't. It's not about fading relevance, it's just evolution. Sure, album sales aren't what they used to be, but Mariah's cultural impact and artistry always keep her in the mix. And when that time of year comes and she gives the signal, you know it's time for her to defrost and for the Christmas magic to happen.

Luis Miguel is an exceptional singer with a powerful voice. He could definitely keep up with her back. And even now, he sounds amazing and he never lips on his concerts. The fact is, when Luis Miguel heard the final mix, he didn't like how their voices blended together. With Rainbow being such a rushed album, Mariah didn't have time to go back into the studio with him. If they'd had more time, I'm sure they could've created something great.

Robert-Anthony, if it were just up to the Lambs, AIWFCIY probably wouldn't have hit the top or become as popular as it is now. Her core fanbase isn't big enough anymore to push the song to the top on its own. The song's really got a life of its own at this point. It's the regular listeners, many of whom might not even know her back catalogue, who are the driving force behind its success. In other words, it's the general public that's made AIWFCIY such a big hit.
Unlike Brenda, Mariah's name and achievements are still a big deal in the music scene today. Her concerts, public appearances, Christmas releases, social media presence, and loyal fans all give AIWFCIY a boost on the charts too.

Do you think the AIWFCIY vs RATCT battle was created by Sony and Universal Music Group to set the stage for AIWFCIY's enormous record breaking success this year? I envisioned the label executives agreed in the board room to create a marketing strategy to help get RATCT to #1 for the song's 65th anniversary by hyping up the battle between the two songs. The battle has really solidified the success of AIWFCIY this holiday season. The Lambs have really come out in full force to keep AIWFCIY on top of the Billboard Hot 100.

Greatness (107,827)
by Bobby A from United States
| |
|
|
I noticed it, but I have tried not to think about it. I guess that is why she didn't use it at all on Caution. That is not my favorite part of her voice anyway. I love her full voice alto range. That is were she shines the most now. Her whistle register at the end Oh Santa was not pleasant to my ear yesterday hearing it in a store while shopping. I think Gladys Knight said 20 years ago that MC was singing out her range.
I can't find the interview, but I can assume she was referring to her whistle register on Emotions. Gladys Knight got her start singing in the church and lead vocalists never sang out of their range leading a song. Female vocalists stuck to their God given range of soprano or alto. It was just unflattering to sing out of your range for the sake of vocal acrobatics. The purpose of the lead vocalist is to lead the song and give the choir cues when to sing their various section parts. To conclude, Dr. Mattie Moss-Clark would throw her shoe at you if you were off key or singing out of your range. Lol.

Greatness (107,825)
by Edward from USA

I'm not sure if anyone else has noticed this, or maybe it's just me, but Mariah's whistle register has deteriorated to the point where it doesn't even sound like her anymore. I'm pretty sure if some of us have noticed, she's well aware of it too. I felt really sad when I heard her part on Ariana's "Yes, And" remix, it sounded unpleasant to the ear, even when studio tweaking was involved.
I kind of feel that Mariah might not believe she can deliver great vocals in the studio anymore. if that's not the case, it's hard for me to understand why she hasn't released at least an EP for her loyal fans in six year.
Don't get me wrong, I'm extremely happy with AIWFCIY breaking records and setting new ones, but if that's all we're going to get from her, it's starting to feel like a one-trick pony to me, especially when we know the greatness she's capable of.

We love a positivity so go RA spread that cheer. I however feel similar to what others mentioned. I think making new music is really at the bottom of her priorities right now, let alone bringing the TEOM energy. It could be that she isn't currently on a label and doesn't want to release a solid body of work until she has logistics in place. She also seems more excited about her biopic rather than an album. We've been hearing she's got 10 songs ready for a while now and she has yet to lay vocals. TEOM Mariah wrote 4 bangers in a span of less than 48 hours. She was hungry back then she had something to prove, I think right now she has fully embraced her "legend" status and "retired until Christmas" status. Music will always be special to her and sometimes her inner Mimi comes out hungry to make a splash that's why she tried jumping on many hot remixes in recent times, but I don't know why she always jumps in by the time the momentum is gone. I will ofcourse always be hungry for new Mariah music so I hope she releases a full body of work soon (unpopular opinion I could not care less about her alt rock album). I would love a collab album with some fresh and current stars especially female artists.

I 100% agree with you there Edward. Do you think it's because she has created a lot of music over the last 30 odd years and doesn't have much inspiration or drive to do more or because she knows her new music doesn't sell at all and hence doesn't feel motivated to put new music out any more? I feel she is motivated by success and that's why she puts more of an effort into the Christmas seasons? Does she even have a record label contract currently?
I do feel she has one more album left in her and we will get something in the near future. I have a feeling she is still searching for her sound and hasn't created anything that really excites her yet hence when she talks about new music her old excitement isn't there yet.
Robert Anthony I hope her next album is more of a fun pop record - ofcourse she will always have her ballads but I wonder if going back to her old formula of a Fantasy/ Heartbreaker/ Loverboy/ Dreamlover etc type of first single release would serve her better?

I hate to rain on your parade, but Mariah's passion for creating new music doesn't seem to be the same as it once was. Even when she talks about it, there's a noticeable lack of the excitement she used to have when she couldn't wait to share what she had been cooking up in the studio. She's far from being in the vibrant "Mimi era" energy.
She should team up with some big names like Rihanna, Beyoncé, Ariana and a few others to release a collabo album. It feels like only her core fanbase is eagerly anticipating new music from her.

Have you seen MC's likeness in Fortnite's Winterfest yet? The graphic designer got her likeness perfect. I like the fact that MC said yes to her likeness being apart of Fortnite's Winterfest. It is just another great treat to continue her holiday dominance. By the way, AIWFCIY's radio spins have increased this week. I think MC has a new manager and team working with her. She hasn't had so many interviews, endorsements, and merchandise/media partnerships in a 3-month period in a long time. Could we be headed into a promotional season similar to TEOM in 2025?

The audio quality of the St John The Devine convert is far superior on this release than the deluxe edition. Plus the added bonus of Hero. I wasn't going to purchase but after hearing how much better it was I couldn't resist.
