Wait a minute, Randy. Are you saying that the 2006 Grammys performance of WBT/FLAB was a combination of lip synching and live singing? I have always thought that the performance was totally live. We have been bamboozled for a very long time now if that is the case.

Thanks for this, I hope she see this and realizes she's not fooling anyone, we can see it and so can the general public. Honestly, at this point its probably only the surgery that can save and repair whatever damage she's got going on. I always said her vocal issues stem from way back to at least 1994. That first tour did something to her voice. And it's blaringly obvious by the "Daydream" era. Sure she still does sound good, but one can tell already she's lost a good chunk of her main voice, maybe a nodule or something else and ever since then it's been downhill vocally for Mariah. Like Celine Dion, Mariah Should come clean. Enough of the façade already. People want to see you win Mariah, but you've got to want to win yourself too. Get professional help. She's never really worked with a vocal coach and at this point a speech therapist (does she even know new tricks of the trade like singing straws, humming and vocal fry exercises, warm ups for pre shows and cool downs for after shows? etc.) and that's why she's in this predicament today. Smh. I feel so worried for her. Get help Mariah, quit being so damn stubborn and delusional.

Sad, but true. I've never seen her struggling like this before. She used to struggle with high belted notes and hard climaxes like many singers do. But since this year's Saudi Arabia performance I really started to worry. Even in her recent tours in 2018, 2019 and 2020 where the raspy parts were there, and she would sing many flat notes, she was still capable of doing a very decent show. But this really hurts. I know she's doing what she can with what she has right now. But again, though I love her, I can't help feeling a little angry and sad for her. There are no excuses. She doesn't work 8 hours as we do. She has a team of well paid people doing whatever she wants her to do for her. She has problems and probably mental issues as most people have, but the difference is that she's a millionaire and she can afford the best doctors, the best vocal coaches, and relearn how to use what's left in her beautiful instrument. She's singing worst than ever, looking more nervous and insecure than ever - but disguised with barbie outfits and allegedly glamorous outfits, lots of dancers, etc- and yet exposing herself more than ever. The Mariah I fell in love with was a perfeccionist. She stopped singing Emotions, Vision Of Love, Make It Happen etc during many years because they were so demanding and so hard to sing. She would sing other songs and though she started struggling after 1997, her agility was insane, her riffs and runs and her musicality were there until not too long ago. But now it feels like she doesn't care, she stands there and sings her hardest songs that she would avoid singing even in her prime, like O Holy Night, Emotions, Fantasy, My All etc and she does it at the worst vocal state. And she knows she's struggling. What she may not be thinking is that singing in higher keys than her range is damaging even more her voice. I can't help imagining Celine, Barbra, Beyoncé, Gaga, Patti Labelle, all partners and great live performers, watching these videos and thinking, wow, she really has lost her voice and she's lipping too much. Considering Mariah doesn't dance, she just walks through the stage and does some girly poses here and there and nervously moves her hand all the time, why do a live concert if the voice is not there? She can cancel. She can say no before going on tour. But I guess the money nowadays is more important for her than what it used to be, even though she's ruining her reputation as a great voice. Which I believe she can still get back if she works hard and regain a part of what she lost.
I don't want her to be perfect, nobody is. I don't even want her to sound perfect as she used to in the first decade of her career. I like in fact her vulnerability as a human being. Her mistakes. Her sense of humor many times. I want her to be honest with herself and her fans. What Celine did last week is an example of honesty as an artist.

The [fans] which is what I am, are who made, make and continue to make her who she is - and whatever achievements she has achieved, or records broken - we her core fan base are directly responsible for that and she should never ever get that fact twisted. She is up there because of us (all caps), our money and undying love effort and support. You tell her [we] said so. For you to come here with the bullsh*t talk about her not caring is just plain dumb. Is she going to those shows to sing to herself? Fans purchased those high priced tickets. The least she can do and is obligated to do is show up on her A game, or at the very least something close to it. You must be one of those gremlins on her team only concerned about your paycheck.

First of all Mariah Carey [does not owe you anything]. You staying a fan is up to you, that [doesn't] mean she has to cater to you lol you sound delusional. If you want to stay liking her music being a fan then that's up to you but you ain't doing her no favors, were you even at the concert physically, did you make a physical purchase of the ticket. No, so what do you know sir?
If nobody cares she wouldn't be selling out, she wouldn't be breaking CBS records and she wouldn't score a [Billboard] no. 1 every year around Christmas time, she would not be relevant, the people, the public and fans love her, trust when I say she's [doesn't] care about your 2 cents, so you can complain all you want but she's going to stay booked and busy.

Nodules and whistles (101,799)
by Terna from Nigeria

You [said] it all honestly, and quite frankly I do hope she's reading this to read our honest opinions, something she can't seem to get from those around her since they are scared of losing their paychecks. This is exactly what Michael Jackson suffered until it was too late. Mariah needs to be booed off stage for her to be jolted back to reality and then do something about her voice like say hire a vocal coach. Like how did you get to this level? What kinda of singer doesn't train their main voice and only relies on the whistle register - which by the way is a parasitic register on the main voice (This is what diminished her voice quality). Mariah does not have a super head voice. Listen to Amel Larrieux.

Nodules and whistles (101,788)
by MC1989 from Spain
| |
|
|
Whistles used to be an ornament in her songs, an extra or a plus to her huge voice range and singing abilities. Nowadays the narrative of "I don't remove my nodules because thanks to them I can hit whistle notes" is absurd. But then again, it' s Maria's choice, and I can even understand the fear of going under that kind of surgery. But right now, in these recent years, the whole range has been affected by the nodules, the lack of training and rehearsing, the bad habits and of course age. She even admitted that she doesn't train her voice before concerts during her Masterclass. She said she does a few vocal scales to see if the whistles and the low notes are there and goes singing. That's not that your instrument has become weak due to age or whatever, it's a personal choice of not wanting to warm up and really train on a regular basis. No vocal resting will change that. But hey, Mariah can whistle. Flat whistles that most of the times sound more like high weak screams than whistles. Between the lipped parts she keeps doing these little whistle screams to try to prove that although she lipped, she can hit some similar sound, if we can consider a shout a note.
I'm here because I'm a fan. I'm always hoping to see if she gets better and if she can surprise me. I loved her memoir, The Rarities, some of her recent interviews, because I love Mariah. I spent more money on her than in any other artist I admire. I want her to succeed and to reach number one and I want people to appreciate her legendary catalogue apart from AIWFCIY. But lately I feel a little sad when I see her performing. I don't like people including me, talking about how bad this or that performance was. So why keep the exposure that much? If she can't sing good an entire song without any lipped part, lipped whistles etc, then stop performing, stop singing impossible songs for her current voice.
Mariah can fool a non fan or a recent fan, but she certainly cannot fool fans like me who have been following her for more than 2 decades and have watched every single performance she has done since 1990. I can recognize immediately when she's lipping. And I had come to a point where I didn't mind she was using prerecorded tracks in some parts of certain songs if the rest of the vocal performance was really good. But this year's performances are really mediocres. Nowadays it's so evident when the lipped part comes in, that she can be happy that the thousands of people who pay the astronomic prices for her shows can think those parts are not lipped, and that they can't hear the differences between her 2022 voice and the 1994 voice for instance in Hark The Herald Angels Sing, where the alternation of those 2 different tones is pure cringe for someone who has a good ear.
By the way I've also noticed that her lip synching has become a little more convincing to the general audience because in the recent years she's been using fillers in her face, and though she looks beautiful I also notice a lack of expression in her face. In the past her face muscles revealed very clearly when she was singing live and when not.
I saw her in Madrid in 2020 and even though she lipped the same parts - because basically it's the same show with a few changes - the show was good and her voice sounded strong and beautiful. But 2022 is one of her worst vocal moments from what I've seen this far. Again, I hope she gets better. I will support her upcoming movie or series about her life, I would also love to hear her 1995 version of Someone's Ugly Daughter and her upcoming projects. But I would like her to stop giving these bad performances.

Speaking of My All, [she] has never really sung that song half as good as on the album and even the original recording is flawed. With all that "singing through the nodules" she's doing. It is actually quite distracting and once you hear it you cannot really "unhear" it again. At this point, just retire the damn song already, because if I hear that "feel your body, feel your body" tired line one more time. Mariah does not have truthful people around her at all, [not] Trey nor Mary Ann nor Bryan Tanaka and it's so sad to see her spiraling down and becoming a one trick pony – Christmas.

Lol. You must be a kid so I will excuse your blatant folly and the way you responded to my message, which was quite frankly from a place of [love] and more importantly concern. What has wanting her to take her craft more seriously and be more disciplined when it comes to her instrument got to do with wanting her to change and me not having inner peace? Haha (I never indicated I was in turmoil). We love (all caps) Mariah that is why we are still here like what? 30 plus years later. I would've easily moved on from her but there's no way that would ever happen, not now and you know why because I did not leave her nor kick her when she was down, and practically the whole world turned their back on her. That was when I even "Stanned" harder for her. Why would I want to start now? You did not experience Mariah Carey in the 90's nor even the early 2000's like we did, you're "prolly" one of the new Lambies. When Mariah stood in front of an audience with a [microphone] you knew you were about to hear vocals no other singer could or is capable of producing. She was all about that voice and with the kinda artist she is that was enough. Nowadays it is the opposite; the lighting, ensembles (ugh I hate this word because of her), "darling", "the lighting" and all the other "crap" she picked up along the way that absolutely nobody cares for. Smh.

Watching the clips, [one] can tell she's really struggling to put on a "singing" show but her voice is really not having it, so she talk sings or alters the melody. I really wish Mariah would get professional help. Now she's also having lower range issues as seen in the "Emotions" and "My All" clips with the unintentional vocal breaks. Another thing I noticed is the repertoire itself isn't the best for a singer her age seeing as it was written "16 to 25 minutes ago", she's missing a lot of qualities that were there before which enabled her sing so well – [agility], fluid and seamless registers, stamina in terms of youth etc just the ease of singing she once had in [general] which was an amalgamation of all these factors and more working hand in hand. It's [sad] to see the last of the two true [divas] struggling; with Celine and her health issues and Mariah and her waning instrument.

Charmbracelet - 20 years (101,739)
by Terna from Nigeria
| |
|
|
For me I did not like this era at all and it's an amalgamation of a lot of factors, yes lyrically the album was mature and really strong but the vocals were irritating to listen to and quite honestly off-putting and I still really feel this way up until today. Whatever vocal issues she had be masking was in full display here and one could not ignore it – her belts were strained and she was suffocating here (literally guys), there isn't any so to speak "real voice" here, her resonance is non existent and everything is "shouty" when she tries to go for it. I was so disappointed and irritated as a die hard "lamby". The only outstanding song on this record is "Through The Rain" (this song is very special and actually a classic in my opinion and I would say one of her signature songs), and maybe "My Saving Grace". Every other song here is a muddled whispery mess have you heard the full 5 minute version of "You Got Me"? Ugh). The album is also poorly produced instrumental and especially vocally, there does not seem to be any reverb on her vocals and if there, very sparse. I also feel the album is boring. Phew thank God for "The Emancipation of Mariah Carey".

Charmbracelet - 20 years (101,727)
by Randy from USA
| |
|

I remember a lot about that era. I couldn't believe how beautiful Through The Rain was and the video is stunning. She was still doing lipping climaxes to the records, but she was on every show, despite not having a hit single. The View, Oprah, Matt Lauer interviewed her, MTV gave her a special. I didn't care for a lot of the album and at the time, I remember one reviewer stating that she did so many different things on the album that it was like mixing watercolors only to end up with a puddle of brown. I remember Lyor Cohen saying that she brought class to DefJam. It was a time where MC garnered respect because of her earlier hits that weren't as far away, but Glitter wasn't the nail in the coffin. Charmbracelet was the first and last time I would pay to see MC live. She lipped most of it. I was in full fan mode that night with butterfly and rainbow stickers all up and down my arm. It definitely is a moment. Through The Rain is the only way I make it to work many days. I still play Lullaby and Subtle Invitation. The rest of it is largely forgotten. But the era isn't.

I would rather prefer the other recordings that did not make the cut, we as fans are aware of ("Weakness of the Body", "Into The Light" etc. recall that tracklist that floated around in 2015?) in addition to a remastered version of the debut album. Her first album still remains one of her best and easily a top three personal favorite of mine.

Migrate vs Obsessed (101,507)
by Terna from Nigeria

Neither, quite honestly. I truly don't like "Migrate" like that. But hard pressed I would pick "Obsessed" as it was a massive hit in 2009. You could hardly escape it and it was also a popular ringtone. I don't play it often because I think its production is a tad bit "noisy" so to put it, But Gen Z love it and they love Mariah as well since she's the unofficial "queen of social media" too. Haha. "Obsessed" is her main qualifier to the that title – one of the ultimate drag/diss songs ever written, point, blank period.

Funny enough it is one of those rare moments that in hind sight, the video is a perfect match for the song. Haha. Why was that era so short?

Chill out Mr. confused and lighten up. There is no disrespect in that post hinting Whitney and Celine, or you also don't have the capacity to recognize genuine humor. Not the kind you tried to pass off as "funny" in the not so distant past Mr. "Armbracelet". Yeah I still recall. And just as a side note, Mariah's only true competition or close equal was Whitney Houston. I don't know where you get that idea Celine could outsing Mariah. When did you ever hear "You're the next Celine Dion"? Exactly my point. Sit down.

by Randy from USA

I'm completely the opposite. I'd like her to sit Christmas out and let the song do the work naturally. I do not like the narrative that she gets dusted off for Christmas each year and is put back. Edward I agree the whistle is used to prove she can "still sing". And Terna for as much as you get on me for being mean, Whitney who? Is very disrespectful of someone who not only MC worked with, but MC respected and is an icon. Whitney Houston was someone's mother, daughter and sister. Maybe it's the Christian in me but I respect human life no matter how many mistakes someone makes. And no matter where Celine is, she can outsing MC. And Ima tell you this, there's so many YouTube videos and TikTok's of lambs tryna prove MC can sing. No other artist's fans feel the need to prove their artist still "has it". I wonder why.

She knew she killed it after that last ending note where she just locked the door and threw away the key, saying I'm the best there ever was. Boom.

You lost me in the very first few lines of your over analytical paragraph. It is clear, You have not even listened to the original recording of that song "If Only You Knew". As it is with Mariah and songs she covers, she sticks to the original melodic line of the song. There was absolutely nothing "unnecessary and noncommittal" as you put it about her melismatic runs, there never is. (Mind You Mariah sings like a musician with the knowledge of how music works.) They were spot on and still in tune with the melodic structure of the song as she sang. You actually think Mariah at that time didn't do her homework to score that song, take note of its breathing map and just went on stage and freestyled as she went. Please. That is a well mapped, well planned, intentional performance, executed to near perfection with a sprinkle of magic. (Didn't Prince said something like this once?) And one can tell, it is solid and you can see the expression on her face, she knows she killed it.

I'm not sure if this is quite accurate, Terna. In the first minute of this song I think her anxiety and insecurity shows through her neurotic melodic phrasing. None of the phrases that she sings in the first minute have an intelligent melodic ending that gives her interpretation of the lines any character or definition. There's a lot of unnecessary and noncommittal melisma that she would probably avoid were she's not so anxious. There is a kind of hackneyed parallelism to the last word of each sentence that gets really annoying and you can tell she's making these decisions at the last minute when there's nowhere else to go vocally. This has always bothering me about some of her performances during that period. I think with some of the resonance that she used to have - that smooth, buttery and broad vibrato - having vanished into thin air, she just tatters the end of each sentence with a bunch of unnecessary predictable filagree. I think the transition to "somewhere over the rainbow" is quite unique and I think it works really well. But, I also think she planned it in advance - which, of course, is a good thing. Overall, though, I like the texture and flexibility of her voice in this performance, but her judgment about vocal silence and motion is off and completely makes me anxious while watching this performance.

Full of grace (101,446)

This is the Mariah I [fell in love with]. That entrance, the raw 100% live singing, husk, rasppiness and all. Then the confidence on stage, not bothering to look pretty nor have good angles for the lighting (notice her exit after that beautiful applause was on her "bad side", no insecurity there). Where did this Mariah Carey go to? Today she really isn't this girl singing here anymore. That line she sings on Candy Bling though, "I'm the same Mimi, fame ain't changed me". Yeah [right] Mariah. Still got love for her though, that will never change.

"Stay the Night" was one of those songs that had a snippet leak if I recall correctly, And that was kinda a demo version, because it sounded unfinished. I loved that demo version even then and eventually when she released the album, the song was there in its full glory and I loved every minute of it. It was an instant favorite of mine, because Mariah was "sanging" again. Lol. It is one of those songs one can say only Mariah can sing and pull it off as its built for the type of voice she has – one that has powerful high belts that pack a punch.

"Then she became more popular then Santa Claus or Jesus Christ." What a dumb thing to say. You better backtrack this statement with immediate effect! God doesn't play with blasphemy.
