I'm still waiting for this dream collaboration. Mariah make it happen. Did you see how Chante' killed it on the Soul Train Awards 2022.

Hers was one of the most clear voices I had ever heard growing up and I fell in love with her immediately. It's unfortunate that she did not get bigger than she should have, but the music she released would always speak. Rest in peace songbird. What a shock. What is it with death everywhere this year?

Debut album (101,663)
by Terna from Nigeria
| |

|
I would rather prefer the other recordings that did not make the cut, we as fans are aware of ("Weakness of the Body", "Into The Light" etc. recall that tracklist that floated around in 2015?) in addition to a remastered version of the debut album. Her first album still remains one of her best and easily a top three personal favorite of mine.

Critics say that MC's debut album is one of the most stunning and best debut albums ever. I would love for MC to release acapella versions and outtakes of the whole album to celebrate the 35th anniversary of its release.

I already told you Mariah would do anything for money: performing for dictators, shoes, clothes, water, hard liquor, jewelry, perfumes, candy, cookies, hostels, chips, McDonald's, bitcoins, champagne, sex toys, dating apps, etc.

Ariana Grande duet (101,508)

There was a leaked clip on Twitter with Mariah singing lead and Ariana on [background] vocals. I think Mariah has been secretly working on new music. It was a ballad with a very haunting, sad melody.

Migrate vs Obsessed (101,507)
by Terna from Nigeria
| |
|
|
Neither, quite honestly. I truly don't like "Migrate" like that. But hard pressed I would pick "Obsessed" as it was a massive hit in 2009. You could hardly escape it and it was also a popular ringtone. I don't play it often because I think its production is a tad bit "noisy" so to put it, But Gen Z love it and they love Mariah as well since she's the unofficial "queen of social media" too. Haha. "Obsessed" is her main qualifier to the that title – one of the ultimate drag/diss songs ever written, point, blank period.

Migrate vs Obsessed (101,503)
by Tevin from USA

So I was listening to Migrate (aka should have been a single) and Obsessed yesterday, and I wanted to get everyone's opinion. Out of the two, which song do you prefer, had Migrate been released as a single, which one do you believe would have charted higher? Finally, which one do you think would have had better longevity?

Touch My Body (101,506)

This song goes hard in a peculiar satisfying way. It hasn't aged at all and even sounds stronger today. It came on when working out on my playlist and it was a pleasant surprise to listen to after not playing it in quite a while. Just a total bop and fun record, I can see why it went number one. . Funny enough it is one of those rare moments that in hind sight, the video is a perfect match for the song. Haha. Why was that era so short?

Christmas surprises (101,475)

I just want her own version of "Where are you Christmas". With [lyrics] like "My [world] is changing, I'm rearranging" (damn she's such a powerful lyricist), I feel like those words are hers, it's a very personal song, reflective of the turmoil she was going through at the time.

Chill out Mr. confused and lighten up. There is no disrespect in that post hinting Whitney and Celine, or you also don't have the capacity to recognize genuine humor. Not the kind you tried to pass off as "funny" in the not so distant past Mr. "Armbracelet". Yeah I still recall. And just as a side note, Mariah's only true competition or close equal was Whitney Houston. I don't know where you get that idea Celine could outsing Mariah. When did you ever hear "You're the next Celine Dion"? Exactly my point. Sit down.

Christmas surprises (101,467)
by Randy from USA

I'm completely the opposite. I'd like her to sit Christmas out and let the song do the work naturally. I do not like the narrative that she gets dusted off for Christmas each year and is put back. Edward I agree the whistle is used to prove she can "still sing". And Terna for as much as you get on me for being mean, Whitney who? Is very disrespectful of someone who not only MC worked with, but MC respected and is an icon. Whitney Houston was someone's mother, daughter and sister. Maybe it's the Christian in me but I respect human life no matter how many mistakes someone makes. And no matter where Celine is, she can outsing MC. And Ima tell you this, there's so many YouTube videos and TikTok's of lambs tryna prove MC can sing. No other artist's fans feel the need to prove their artist still "has it". I wonder why.

You lost me in the very first few lines of your over analytical paragraph. It is clear, You have not even listened to the original recording of that song "If Only You Knew". As it is with Mariah and songs she covers, she sticks to the original melodic line of the song. There was absolutely nothing "unnecessary and noncommittal" as you put it about her melismatic runs, there never is. (Mind You Mariah sings like a musician with the knowledge of how music works.) They were spot on and still in tune with the melodic structure of the song as she sang. You actually think Mariah at that time didn't do her homework to score that song, take note of its breathing map and just went on stage and freestyled as she went. Please. That is a well mapped, well planned, intentional performance, executed to near perfection with a sprinkle of magic. (Didn't Prince said something like this once?) And one can tell, it is solid and you can see the expression on her face, she knows she killed it.

I'm not sure if this is quite accurate, Terna. In the first minute of this song I think her anxiety and insecurity shows through her neurotic melodic phrasing. None of the phrases that she sings in the first minute have an intelligent melodic ending that gives her interpretation of the lines any character or definition. There's a lot of unnecessary and noncommittal melisma that she would probably avoid were she's not so anxious. There is a kind of hackneyed parallelism to the last word of each sentence that gets really annoying and you can tell she's making these decisions at the last minute when there's nowhere else to go vocally. This has always bothering me about some of her performances during that period. I think with some of the resonance that she used to have - that smooth, buttery and broad vibrato - having vanished into thin air, she just tatters the end of each sentence with a bunch of unnecessary predictable filagree. I think the transition to "somewhere over the rainbow" is quite unique and I think it works really well. But, I also think she planned it in advance - which, of course, is a good thing. Overall, though, I like the texture and flexibility of her voice in this performance, but her judgment about vocal silence and motion is off and completely makes me anxious while watching this performance.

Full of grace (101,446)
by Terna from Nigeria
| |
|
|
This is the Mariah I [fell in love with]. That entrance, the raw 100% live singing, husk, rasppiness and all. Then the confidence on stage, not bothering to look pretty nor have good angles for the lighting (notice her exit after that beautiful applause was on her "bad side", no insecurity there). Where did this Mariah Carey go to? Today she really isn't this girl singing here anymore. That line she sings on Candy Bling though, "I'm the same Mimi, fame ain't changed me". Yeah [right] Mariah. Still got love for her though, that will never change.

"Stay the Night" was one of those songs that had a snippet leak if I recall correctly, And that was kinda a demo version, because it sounded unfinished. I loved that demo version even then and eventually when she released the album, the song was there in its full glory and I loved every minute of it. It was an instant favorite of mine, because Mariah was "sanging" again. Lol. It is one of those songs one can say only Mariah can sing and pull it off as its built for the type of voice she has – one that has powerful high belts that pack a punch.

Global Citizen performance (101,320)
by Terna from Nigeria
| |
|
|
I just re-watched it on their YouTube page (in critic mode this time) and I must say I [loved] it, [genuinely]. That inversion of "Honey" and "Heartbreaker" was everything and seeing her pals Jadakiss and Styles P come out to support made me smile, they look good. I haven't been excited about a Mariah live performance in a minute and she did good. Her voice has improved so much, less airy and much more warm and fluid again, than say when she recorded in 2020. The annoying rasp is still there, but not as distracting either, and that "We Belong Together" climax was a "Pow" moment. I applaud Mariah and yes now, I am excited for her next album recording seeing as how drastic her voice has improved. I [look] forward to another "The Emancipation of Mimi" 2025, [bring it] Mariah. *fingers crossed*

I have no doubt, it is a Gospel record, which is always what I have wanted Mariah to do, with songs like "Vision of Love", "My Saving Grace" and "Fly Like a Bird", I would definitely be here for her own versions of Gospel classic covers and also more original Gospel songs. The Clark Sisters collaboration points in that direction.

Breakdown rediscovered (101,249)
by Terna from Nigeria
| |
|
|
I liked this song, played it sometimes but never really got its vibe, maybe I was too young to understand grown folk issues and breakups. However, I have been playing the song non stop as I rediscovered it with fresh "grown ears" so to speak, haha and play it quite often now. It never was a song I gravitated towards until quite recently (2021). The [emotion] she sings with is so real, that desperation and frustration one feels, conveyed perfectly through the [ad-libs] towards the end of the song. Wow Mariah, thank you for this song.

Re: If Butterfly single was released (101,240) (101,248)
by Terna from Nigeria

"Butterfly", to me, does not come across as [single material], it is a very quality song, a cut above most of her [ballads] and if I'm being honest almost too good to be a single release, but I am glad she gave it a video treatment though. That song is really special and too personal for radio, the type deep album cut of a gem you discover on your own that would make the album worth the purchase, and let us also be real "Candle in the Wind" was not gonna be unseated from that space. The whole world mourned Lady Diana for months and honestly, the rest of that ugly year 1997.

Re: The Ballads compilation (101,150) (101,156)
by Terna from Nigeria

Not according to her definition of what a "ballad" is to her as a songwriter, and this is a Mariah Carey compilation after all. Recall the podcast that was released in promotion of the compilation? She spoke extensively on her own interpretation of what a ballad is and it is clear she strives for different "types" of ballads, not just the regular "middle of the road ones". Thus the appearances of cuts like "The Roof", "Dream lover", and "Thank God I found You (Make it last)".

Re: The Ballads compilation (101,130) (101,147)
by Terna from Nigeria

It's all a marketing strategy. These type of collections are not really for fans, but mainly as an introduction of the artist to non fans who are casual listeners. Through these compilations a "glimpse" of who she is as an artist and hints at her body of work is made available, without having to go through the whole discography. People gravitate towards certain types of music and genres more than others (Ballads, Mid-tempos, Up-tempos etc.). So for a casual non listening fan, there are always gonna be a variety of songs showcased. And for a genre crossing artist such as herself, she would want to be represented a certain kind of way with an equal balance of her Pop catalogue as well as the R&B and the Hip-hop all of which she has been very successful at - thus the weird tracklistings all the time, it's all marketing, because at the end of the day it's about selling records and making money.
