Re: Battle of the albums round 1 (75,811) (75,812) by Bill from the UK
Great subject, but already it's hard to choose (exclamation mark). Both have their strong points and are dear to me but Emotions sways it because the upper register was perfect and unashamedly present on almost every track. The production was more coherent throughout due to MC co-producing everything. The songwriting was more mature, the ballads bigger and more atmospheric, and who cannot love the collaborations with Cole and Clivilles? On top of that, the three videos are three of her best. She'd gone out of that somewhat shy/awkwardness from her first batch and seemed genuinely confident and at ease. It was soulful and the influences from gospel and the 70s worked brilliantly. Also love the album cover and those earth tones.

I love that Mariah posted about Martyn, that is the most heart felt thing she could have done. Thank you Mariah so much for bringing him into our lives in the first place, and for being there for us when he left them.

Lots of love to you Andrew, for you have lost a truly dear friend. This is all so senseless and heartbreaking.

It has been confirmed Martyn died in the terrorist attack. I don't know what to say. This is heartbreaking.

My prayers for Martyn. This awful news about him missing adds some terrifying realness to a surreal and unbelievable event. I pray to God that he is okay, please Lord.

Re: Mariah loosing a lot of fans thread (75,554) (75,569) by Bill from the UK
She's not relevant anymore. She hasn't had a hit in years. I remember overhearing colleagues at work talking about her after the NYE disaster. They were all in their 30s and would have grown up with her music during the 90s. The conversation was peppered with comments like "I didn't even realise she was still singing" and "her last album was the We Belong Together one ten years ago" and "she only comes out at Christmas to sing AIWFCIY". The fact is MC has done so much damage to her brand and reputation in recent years that her only choices are to either clean house and have one last all-out attempt to right the ship, or continue on down the path she's on and fade into obscurity and cult fandom. It's pretty clear what decision she's made. I really don't think there is any coming back from where she is now. No one likes the diva behaviour, the catty comments, the brushing off of the horrific performances, the opulent unrelatable lifestyle, the diamonds, the splashes, the in-your-face trashy sexiness, the plastic surgery. People liked the big haired, big voiced girl from Long Island, who was humble and sincere and grateful. That girl who recorded her demos in a woodshop. She's now a caricature of what she was, like Zsa Zsa Gabor or some other faded silver screen starlet. What a waste of a God given talent. Never before witnessed something squandered right before my eyes in such a manner.

Re: Interesting LA Reid article (75,501) (75,511) by Bill from the UK
I could understand if the comments were about CB, as it didn't crack the top 50 in the UK, but TEOM was a top 10 and had one of the longest runs on the chart since Butterfly. It started as a top 10, hung around the mid 20s for several weeks, and then climbed back into the top 10. Her subsequent albums (and several before) were all pretty much a flash in the pan chart wise, where they enter and fall off completely after a month. TEOM was the only album of hers since the mid-90s that had any kind of chart longevity and which went up, down or maintained its position week to week. For comparison, Rainbow spent 4 weeks in the top 75, TEOM 43 weeks.

Re: Signature song (75,318) (75,329) by Bill from the UK
It's not We Belong Together. The entire population of every Westernised country know AIWFCIY.

AIWFCIY is arguably more her signature song than Hero is.

Re: How 650 million can get messed up (75,219) (75,230) by Bill from the UK
I do agree. Mariah is a "native New Yorker". She grew up riding the subways, running with people up in Harlem, down on Broadway. She's no tramp, but she's no lady. Talking that street talk. She's the heart and soul of New York City.

My best wishes to you and your lucky spouse for the future Jade, I love that you ended on Melt Away, a beautiful track perfect for the moment.

Yay, I love To The Floor so much. A great tune, best song on Emancipation by a mile in my opinion. But then, who am I?

Re: Songs you wish Mariah would do (75,124) (75,127) by Bill from the UK
There's a much better song by Minnie I'd live Mariah to do called "Reasons". It's got more of a punch to it and the sustained high notes throughout are up there with those from "Bliss". Plus Mariah is a better singer in general than Minnie so can really add more to the song. I'd also love for her to sing "The Impossible Dream".

Re: Everything Fades Away (75,029) (75,032) by Bill from the UK
Agree completely. It still makes no sense to me how it was left off the US version. Thank God the International versions all included it. It was a beautiful, haunting, heart breaking ending to the album.

Re: Albums (74,925) (74,953) by Bill from the UK
Ha, gut punch number one: you skip The Wind. Gut punch number 2, you hate To The Floor. TTF is my fave from TEOM by a long, long way. It's so free and breezy and laid back, I can't explain it but it sounds "spacious" to me. In my head I always call the song "Tonight", as I remember that was the title it was given when it leaked shortly after Say Somethin' did. Next you'll be saying you don't like Make It Look Good lol. Nice to see many people appreciating Emotions. I could listen to Till the End of Time all day.

Re: Albums (74,918) (74,920) by Bill from the UK
Emotions is probably my most listened to and favourite album of Mariah's, not counting Unplugged of course which for me is in its own league. It's a moving, beautiful album made with sincerity which is now sadly missing. Her look during that period was incredible. The embodiment of "classic Mariah", the videos were great, great single choices and promotional appearances too. The only album other than the debut that completely showcased her amazing range. The numerous producers on the first album made it lack coherency but this album had a continual mood and delivery. The C&C numbers were great, not to mention the Carole King collaboration (and the SNL/Grammy performances of If It's Over have got to be in almost every fan's top ten), and then the beautiful ending of Till The End Of Time and the haunting jazz influenced The Wind, I have no words. I gush about this album so much because it never comes up in convo. Everyone's always Butterfly this, TEOM that, but Emotions is a true underrated gem and an album I have loved from first listen to the current day. I play it daily.

You honestly see Mariah as a "grounded celebrity"? For some moments in life there are no words.

Re: Glennis Grace is the new Whitney? (74,699) (74,709) by Bill from the UK
Her Christmas album has a rendition of AIWFCIY and Miss You Most, both of which she does really well.

Yep, "acting so corny like fritos" stands up there as one of her greatest ever lyrics and there's absolutely no need for anyone else to step in.

Re: Mariah the songwriter (74,509) (74,513) by Bill from the UK
Look at When You Believe and All My Life. Original songs written for Mariah and she sure as hell made them her own. Her remakes almost always trump the original (I'll Be There, Without You, Open Arms) so she could easily take somebody else's song to the next level as she does with her own material.
