Saw the clip, I was worried about the acting before but she did fine. So I'm relieved. I like that they included a "coaching moment" and didn't just dive straight into them singing the song. I hope they give her a good amount of screen time since they have been using her name to promote the show since even before the season aired.

With Ariana referencing TMB in her song "Into You" and Mariah referencing "I'm so into you" in "Infamous", you better be prepared to get your scalp snatched by a duet between these two. I'm telling you, these are hints, breadcrumbs being dropped. Haha I'm kidding by the way. By the way we might be getting another single. "Might be" is the key word here, because Mariah said she is working to get a few things out before she embarks on her Latin leg of the SSFT shows.

I still stand by what I said about it being fine for the TV story line. But I also stand by what I said about this song not being Mariah at her full potential. And like I said before I'm not "devastated" by it not being the type I expect (although I didn't expect much from this as I just took it as a bonus song) neither will I have have mini meltdowns over it. I was severely disappointed with "Infinity" because they made it sound like the next big thing then it fell flat. But with this song, I have moved on. However that being said, I do feel like she could have used a better song for this opportunity. But hey what do I know, I'll gladly be slapped with a "I told you so" if this becomes a hit. After all when it comes to Mariah, I'll always root for her to win. As for Jussie having fans, in the words of Randy Jackson, "that will be a no from me". Empire is a very successful show but very few of the singles from the show actually charted. Yes the soundtrack was successful but the singles didn't really make a huge impact. If this song makes a huge impact, it will only be because of Mariah's name and the publicity they are using with Mariah in the snippets. It is however making some impact in Australia where it has become the highest selling single from Empire. As for having "Infamous" quality songs as album cuts, now that's a completely different thing right? This is why album cuts shouldn't be released as singles. Lastly, I also think maybe she should have released the song right after the episode aired for maximum impact. The publicity from the show combined with the anticipation of a new Mariah song would push fans and casual listeners to buy it. Releasing it 1 week in advance kinda kills the momentum. What's your take on the song though Ribbon? I'm sorry if you've already given your review and I missed it, I've been a little distracted. Did you like the song?

Ugh Edward do you read minds or what? I too think this is yet another missed opportunity. Like you, I am not "devastated" by the song because I didn't expect much. It was like a bonus this year. But for Mariah it's quite the missed opportunity because this song would have gotten noticed by at least the millions of viewers that tune in to watch "Empire" in the States and worldwide. Great publicity for her without even having to make much effort. For that reason only she should have put in more effort. This is the same with what happened last year when she could have used Bieber's fame to her advantage. Just the fact that Justin crashed into Mariah's studio got so much coverage, if the song would have been released it would have gotten a lot more attention because since last year, everything Bieber touches was selling like hot cakes. And when I said "release the song" I didn't mean the half cooked nonsense mess we got to hear but fine tune it to make it for of a Mariah and Bieber song. Plus where is the 19th #1 Bulochnikov was going on about? I'm so bored of the wasted opportunities. It's like she doesn't even care. Sorry about the messy post.

New song (66,896)
by Mimi L. from Empower Your Highlighter
| |
|
|
I long for a day when Mariah makes a song again where majority of the fans are on the same page and love it on the first listen. Like what happened when we heard WBT or ABMB or "Fantasy". I wsh we didn't have to try and make ourselves like a song just because it's released by Mariah. I've never really had to force myself to like a Mariah song before "Infinity". I even loved YME on first listen, I still love it. I mean to be honest I feel like all her efforts since 2015 have been weak and she doesn't sound like she is inspired. Saying "Infamous" is better than "Infinity" or "Why You Mad" is not enough. At this point you are just trying to justify her material by comparing it to songs that were not up to her standards (Infinity) and unfinished mess (Why You Mad), which really shouldn't be the way to go. (Side note, I'll say "Infinity" is better than "Infamous" because it's more memorable and catchier.) Mariah's benchmark should be the higher quality songs she has been making her whole life, her benchmark shouldn't be the "bare minimum quality" where we have to say "Oh well it's definitely better than Infinity". She should make songs that are either on the same level or above the level of her high quality songs. Also I feel like some of her recent songs kind of just sound like it ends abruptly. Is it just me or do others get it too? I mean you feel like it's going to build up to a bigger ending but instead it just abruptly stops, which makes it sound like she wasn't sure what to do next or just got bored or ran out of time so she stopped there. Here's to wishing she improves her next attempt at a lead single/album and chooses her collaborators wisely and uses them wisely too. For example #Beautiful was a step in the right direction. It was fresh, different Mariah yet classic Mariah, but she had such a small part on her own lead single and the song was too short. Then "Triumphant" (although I don't get the hate and I love it as it is) could have fared better if Mariah's part was longer and more prominent. So just choosing different collaborators won't work, she needs to utilize them properly too.

Expectation - Estelle and Jussie's Conqueror (66,887)
by Mimi L. from Empower Your Highlighter
| |
|
|
When I heard it's going to be song about helping Jussie get his confidence back, I assumed it'll be a strong ballad. I also expected a strong chorus, something you can sing along to which lifts your spirit and give you goosebumps and then have a big climax. Basically I thought it would be great if it was in the line of this song by Estelle, which Jussie and Estelle sang on an episode of "Empire". A song like this written by Mariah could have been the next "Hero". Coming to "Infamous", I feel like this is basically the song Mariah talked about last year when she said she had written a song that she thought would go well for a scene between Lucious and Cookie but back then Lee wanted her to do an acting appearance. So I'm guess Mariah just reworked that same song (since it's less of an uplifting song and more of a romantic song) and then used it for this episode. I listened to the song a couple of times again today and I feel like I don't think it's bad as I thought it was, but it's still not sticking. I can honestly live with the song, but that auto tuned rap just makes me cringe every single time. Like Mariah would say "edit it out, edit it out".

I'll second that. The song is quite forgettable. I too was trying to remember it but couldn't. It's weird because that hardly ever happens to me with Mariah songs. I listened to it twice, might give it a few more spins and watch how they play it out on screen but I don't think I'll be adding it to my playlist.

You have to understand this song is for a cheesy TV show and set for a cheesy story line of helping Jamaal get his confidence back and reuniting Cookie and Lucious back together. So if you think in context of that, it fits. If you take it out of the context and think this is where her new music is headed then it's a different story for this song, I didn't have high expectations, you should listen to the other songs on Empire, take their signature song "You're so Beautiful" or their other song "Keep your money", you'll see how cheesy it gets. Basically the song was probably crafted intentionally to be cheesy because it's for a cheesy scenario in a cheesy TV show. That being said, I like the melody, the piano, I like that she used her natural voice so she can replicate it on stage but I don't think it's a strong song overall. When they described it as an uplifting song, I was thinking the chorus would have be stronger and give me goosebumps haha. I also absolutely hate the sudden T-Pain moment. I don't know why that was necessary and why Mariah thought it was a good idea. They could have instead just gotten Bryshere/Hakeem to rap, but all in all that part should have just been scrapped off. The sound of the song is also nothing fresh or exciting, but I can over look that because this I'm taking this song in context with the show and I can understand how this will work as a soundtrack for a show/movie.

Ya but her team can only do that if they stop vacationing and actually work. Bey's team is not out and about following her all over the world on vacations with their entire family and extended family. Stella on the other hand is too busy posing on other people's private jets, pretending it's hers to really sit and chalk out a game plan to get Mariah's image in check.

Re: Now Miley is attacking Mariah (66,768) (66,789)
by Mimi L. from Empower Your Highlighter

Miley has already been inducted into the "I don't know her" hall of shame. Once people go there, they officially lose out any potential of topping charts. Demi's "musical efforts" went completely unnoticed even after it was heavily promoted. Ariana still didn't get a #1 hit even after she basically was all over the place and her recent album didn't get much attention. JLo is not even considered to be a "singer". So ya Miley should have stuck to people of her own level but she "reached for the stars" (sung a la "Triumphant").

MC on MC (66,763)
by Mimi L. from Empower Your Highlighter
| |
|
|
So Miley Cyrus has said some pretty heavy things about Mariah Carey, to quote her, she said "I've never really been a fan, because it's so much about Mariah Carey. That's part of her shtick; I can see through that. That's part of what makes her a gay icon; like, it's about Mimi. It's about what she's wearing, and it's about her. What I make isn't about me. It's about sharing my story; it's about someone being connected to what I'm saying." First of all, as a fan of Mariah's music, I'll say not everything about Mariah is shallow and decorative. If anyone denies her the credit of being one of the greatest songwriters with lyrics that are real, deep and meaningful, then I would just tell them to actually go and listen to her "real catalogue" of "real songs" and not just listen to the hits like TMB and "Obsessed" and things of that nature and thinking that's all she write. No, I don't think these songs are bad, in fact I love and enjoy them but judging Mariah's songwriting based on these songs is not right. Go listen to "Outside", "Looking In", "Petals", ATYNAF, "Butterfly", "Love Takes Times" and songs like that to really see her deep side, her songwriting expertise and how she's a genius musician and is million times better than anything Miley has ever written or will write. Case in point "Miley Cyrus and her Dead Petz". So Mariah isn't real because she didn't write a song about her dead pet goldfish? Boo-hoo. She wrote "Bye Bye" with Jack in mind (among other people close to her) so Miley what's good? I do admire that Miley keeps it real most of the time, her friend circle does not include famous faces for publicity like Taylor, she has some good songs, she voices her opinion about things she is passionate about, she does a lot of charity work, but it would be far fetched to say she doesn't pull stunts. Stripping off and sexually assault Robin Thicke on stage for shock value, wearing a grotesque costume shaped like genitalia, swinging naked on a wrecking ball for views are all stunts. So she isn't really in the position to call Mariah out. But some things she said unfortunately what the GP, including some lambs now think about her. And Mariah is partly to blame for this with all the stunts, the over the top diva act among other things. She is pure, real talent, she doesn't need to drop to this level yet she does. All these take away from her music. Her celebrity/diva status completely overshadows her talent nowadays. It's sad really that this is what the current generation thinks of her and so they don't even bother testing her music or else if they did, they'd be in love with her because her music is something she never disappoints me with. It's always magical.

Re: Mariah's meet and greet disaster-nadia (66,757) (66,762)
by Mimi L. from Empower Your Highlighter

I don't get it, all I'm hearing is he got banned because he crossed the line but what did he actually do? I genuinely want to know. If there's a security concern I get why they'd not let her near Mariah, in fact that's how it should be but cancelling the rest for this is a bit extreme because Mariah said it herself that people from all over the world come to see her in Vegas (which means local/international air tickets, hotel/food expenses, the ticket itself). Now let me get this straight, I don't mean in any way that just because people paid so much money to see so she is bound to give them what they want. I am completely in favor of her thinking about her security first before anything else because let's be real some fans are so obsessed they can prove to me really dangerous for the stars they adore (case in point John Lennon, Christina Grimme, Selena Quintanilla, Sandra Bullock, Gwyneth Paltrow). So I would not take security concerns lightly at all if the security thought he was dangerous for Mariah. Better to cancel and refund instead of going ahead and risking it out. But if it was something small like say the fan demanding extra time because he spent money for this or that he was impolite towards her security then they could have just escorted him out and moved on with the rest. Anyways, I still want to know what happened. Did he try to get physically aggressive or verbally? I mean it seems unlikely because Mariah did post a picture of her hugging him before on her instagram, this is the guy right? Someone on this board mentioned they asked him to make a doll for Mariah and also that Mariah knows him and frequently gives him shout-outs from the stage, so I'm a little confused how it went down.

I love UUOMF though. It's such a fun and empowering song. I could have lived without the useless reprise though and I would have liked "Skydiving" to replace that. I would also have liked for "Imperfect" to stay on the album. I probably wouldn't replace any other song because I love all the songs on "Memoirs".

Did she? I remember her saying that she makes her own mixture of products that she uses as skin care. She said she mixes a lot of stuff together to keep her skin in good condition. Then she went on to say that she might consider selling her mixture in the future. She might have talked about the spray tan, I can't remember. Her TEOM tan was fine, the TAOM tan was orange though.

Empire song update (66,613)
by Mimi L. from Empower Your Highlighter
| |
|
|
So Mariah's song in Empire is produced by Mariah, JD and Brian M. Cox. While I really enjoy Mariah's collaborations with JD, I don't get why she didn't work with the producers working on Empire's music. I think it's Rodney Jerkins and Ne-Yo now. I would have loved a Timbaland track but I heard he won't be coming back for Season 3. Ah well, we'll see what we get in 1 week. I'm excited.

The 24K gold spray tan was for the "Triumphant" video. The TEOM era tan was still fine, although I much rather prefer her to be just her natural self. I think it makes her look much younger. Her #Beautiful era tan was good too. But ya the TEOM era one was still fine but she surely isn't using what she did back then because every time she got tan recently it's straight up orange and splotchy. Haha it baffles me with all the money Mariah still chooses the worst tan and clothes. Like look at how orange they make her. This is another example. Compare it to this where she is in her natural tone and she looks much more radiant and younger.

Ugh no please let it stay gone. Mariah's tan is always an orange, splotchy, uneven mess. Somehow they get it wrong most of the type, I just don't get it. It also somehow ages her and makes the area around her cleavage and arms look bad. I much rather prefer with her natural skin tone and bronzer. She looks more radiant and younger.
