I agree, it was a huge oversight that Always Be My Baby was not featured on the list and yet Sweetheart (a cover song) was. As it's been mentioned, it started their happy and successful partnership all those years ago, and is still routinely played on US radio stations some 20-something years after its release.

Re: What is Mariah's most under-rated song (66,617) (66,618)

Ribbon is indeed brilliant and was my fave on Memoirs upon first listen. It is my most played track from the album. I think Fantasy is her most underrated though, especially the remix, as it completely changed the shape of music to come ever since. It is literally up there with "Rock Around the Clock" for how much it ushered in a new sound and changed the landscape of pop music. Only a handful of critics have ever picked up on its importance and sadly it probably won't be until long after we're all dead and buried that Mariah and the song get the recognition it so deserves. The same came really be said for Vision Of Love, in that it popularised the melismic singing style and has affected and influenced every female R&B singer since. Girls don't try to sing in a straightforward fashion like Karen Carpenter anymore, they go all out with trills and licks like Mariah did. The only song of hers that gets its dues is AIWFCIY, and rightly so. A genius song. I could write for days about it.

I remember when I first heard Loverboy, here on this very forum, it was the first time I felt a little deflated and let down by a launch track. Now however, I love it and it grew and grew on me over the years. When TTR was launched, I liked the fact that she launched the album with a ballad, but I thought the production was lacking and it could have done with some strings, a snare drum, and a choir (that Afanasieff schmaltz if you will), but now, I wouldn't change a single thing about it. The spareness is what sets it apart and the quiet beginning that crescendos to the final chorus is perfect.

The contrast between the pictures of Mariah on the bed and then the one with her and Rocky at the table is unbelievable. Mariah looks so youthful and happy and like her old self in that natural picture vs the staged ones. If only she would have the self belief that her beauty is natural and radiates from within.

Glitter (66,491)

That was a great article about Glitter. That album, sorry, "soundtrack", is so underrated and features some of my most favourite MC songs. If We, Don't Stop, Lead The Way, Loverboy and Never Too Far are great songs. The video for Loverboy still remains one of my faves all these years later.

Yes I'm aware Can't Let Go stopped her original run of chart toppers. But as Mariah has said, they also didn't want her at-the-time streak of #1's to end, from Fantasy to Honey. It's likely because other artists (like Whitney) had long mid-career streaks.

Tommy is a business man and if he didn't want to release Butterfly because of its subject matter, the entire project would have been shelved. Butterfly was released as a single internationally in several countries and got full remix treatment etc. Mariah has gone on record saying the reason only two singles got a "proper" release from that album was because the execs didn't want her streak of #1s to end as they were trying to beat Whitney's streak of 7. Butterfly in fact had more videos on rotation on MTV (Honey, Honey remix, Butterfly, My All, My All remix, The Roof, Breakdown) and more singles released globally than any subsequent album.

For me, Mariah looked sexy and desireable in videos like Emotions, Can't Let Go, Dreamlover, Always Be My Baby and Fantasy. She had natural sex appeal because she was always so photogenic and attractive. It's too in your face at the moment. Remember how amazing she looked on Ellen when she announced her Vegas residency? More of that is all that's needed.

Morgan and Alison (65,915)
by Bill from the UK
| |

What baffles me, is Morgan previously called Mariah a "witch" for not helping Alison. He is currently belittling the help MC previously gave to her sister by saying that "you don't give money to a heroin addict", which I do agree with. So, my question is, what does he want Mariah to provide Alison with that he himself can't, if not financial? Has he actually said, and I missed it?

I understand I Still Believe/Pure Imagination didn't make it onto the album due to copyright reasons (clearance etc) around the Pure Imagination sample. It's a real shame as it is the only major omission from the album and would have been better than all the album cuts that filled the second disc.

Butterfly's anniversary (63,280)
by Bill from the UK
| |
|
|
Forgive me for digressing from the conversations about snapchat, Bryan, Stella, "Marian's" state of mind, scientology, Mishka and "mary", but I wanted to bring it back to the music briefly (shoot me). Butterfly's 20th anniversary hits next year, and now Mariah is back at Sony, and has acknowledged it is her personal favourite, I really hope she does something special to mark the occassion. I doubt many of you know/listen to/care about the artist Tori Amos, but she has been revisiting her back catalogue and has released deluxe versions of her earlier albums. All remastered and include a second disc of b-sides, remixes, live tracks and a revised booklet with commentary etc. What would you all like to see? I hope for the original record remastered, and the second disc to have the videos, the rare Butterfly/Mi Todo club mixes, and maybe a "making of" retrospective. Also a vinyl release would be fantastic like the red vinyl Merry Christmas.

Re: Article: Teachers reveal what stars were like as students (63,143) (63,165)

I agree somewhat. Though I remember reading an article from 1998 or thereabouts where she claimed she was the type of schoolgirl who "slammed other girls into the lockers" and smoked in the bathroom during the lessons and was generally a nightmare to school. But then Mariah was a born singer. With a voice like hers there was no way she wouldn't be world famous. The tone, the range, the versatility, the power. I imagine for her school was just something that got in the way.

My favourite Mariah interview (62,990)
by Bill from the UK
| |
|
|
Hi all, please let me share with you my most favourite Mariah interview. It was during the promo round for Precious and I Want To Know What Love Is. Mariah looks great, is engaging, endearing, charming, funny, happy, personable and the best I ever saw her. She honestly seemed genuinely at peace here. I cannot help but smile from ear to ear whenever I watch this. Please take seven minutes out of your day and treat yourself.

Hey Jenny, I meant Ariana not Celine in my message, sorry if I wan't clear. I wouldn't write anything negative about Celine's voice as I do recognise her ability as a singer. I watched the Chain Of Fools performance again and you can see Mariah is just elated to be sharing the stage with Aretha. Aretha even starts singing Mariah's verse, before saying "go ahead" and letting her continue it. That's what I meant by her holding back. Carole King showed Aretha the same respect, as she was supposed to open Natural Woman but Aretha sang the verse instead. She punctuated a line with "thanks" directed at Carole for allowing her to take the lead. For me, the Natural Woman performance was one thing, but I think the comments Mariah made around Celine come from the "Testimony" finale. Watching that you can really see that Aretha was getting annoyed haha. All that said, I really have no issue with Celine whatsoever, I was just elaborating on Mariah's comments and her performance that night.

We're talking about it because it was brought up during Mariah's appearance on WWHL. Look at it this way, Divas Live 2030 is on and Mariah is front stage centre singing Hero. Ariana then starts, stands in front of her and starts screeching and warbling across her, whilst Beyonce hangs back and sings along with the backing singers. You'd all be baying for Ariana's blood and praising Beyonce. Mariah's voice was in fine form that night and she's said on numerous occassions that you simply don't try to outdo the queen of soul. Everybody else on stage got the memo, and knew this was Aretha's song and her moment, except Celine.
