I see your point, and this is probably what all the "retire" crowd are missing. They forget she is human, and, like every single one of us in this world, is dealing with her own problems and struggles every day. Mariah's world has come crashing down around her. She has lost her husband, for all we know he may be trying to get custody of her precious children, if not, they face the prospect of being raised by a single parent just as she was. And yet people stand here and complain about her lip syncing and call her an alcoholic (not you, but messages in general lately). It is frankly awful and disgusting to speak about anybody in that matter. Mariah isn't thick skinned. She is a warm, beautiful, caring, insecure and vulnerable woman. The fact her supporters can so quickly write her off and post such heartless and callous messages about her during her lowest moments leaves me lost for words. It honestly does. I just pray that Mariah will never read these messages, because that fragile flower that she is would be devastated if she ever did. I will support Mariah as much as I can through this period. I have always loved her and always will. I loved her from the moment I first saw her (the Dreamlover video). I knew right then, at 9 years old, how special she was, and she has remained so dear to me to this day, and will continue to until my last.

I don't understand (49,897)
by Bill from the UK
| |
|
|
I really don't understand all this chipping away at Mariah. She did a bad performance at the Tree Lighting ceremony yet completely came back with the Beacon shows, which were fantastic. TECS got off to a ropey start but by the time her bronchitis went she was sounding great. She messed up lipping a song she has probably never sung live (even in her peak), more than likely because of a technical issue. Hardly cause for retirement. If you don't like Mariah as she is, then let go. It's not easy, in fact it can be exceedingly hurtful, but there's an art to it.

I'm sorry but publicly calling Mariah out like that is low rent and is just a cry for attention. If Nate was any kind of friend to Mariah he would take his concerns to her privately and not publish it on his Facebook for everybody to see. Mariah would never, ever do that to one of her peers. "So many I'd considered closest to me, turned on a dime and sold me out dutifully".

Jazz and Blues thoughts (49,799)
by Bill from the UK

So I've watched some clips other than Fantasy. ABMB was great. Her voice sounded rich and her ad libs were beautiful. The only lipped part seems to be the climax after "only a matter of time" which she always lips. The rest seemed great to my ears. I do think the reaction to Fantasy has been a bit extreme, and we're not giving Mariah the credit she deserves. Mariah has been performing for 25 years. She has performed Fantasy many times, and she wrote the song. I sincerely doubt that she would be unable to convincingly lip sync a song that a) is one of her biggest hits and one she has sung countless times and b) has lipped many times in the past successfully. There was (caps) obviously (end caps) some fault which meant she couldn't hear the music or the backing track. This is probably why she was singing some parts live over the backing track. The same goes for her messing up the ABMB lip (she missed her cue) and the end to WBT. All lipped sections, it seems as thought she couldn't hear. I'm not making excuses because I am always disappointed when she lip syncs, but honestly, people are making out like she's some washed up alcoholic has been, staggering around the stage unable to even remember her own songs, and that's just not the case. Mariah, as the opening of Heavenly says, you don't have to speak up for yourself. Be still, and let God fight your battles. Hey to Shelly.

Our lovely Mariah (49,645)
by Bill from the UK
| |
|
|
I've never seen the board so busy before. I would implore each of you to please, please support Mariah. During times like this, she needs her fans the most. We all want her to succeed and we all wish her happiness. I don't like seeing what I am as much as any of you, and who knows what our poor Mariah is dealing with? She may have been dealt a huge blow personally seconds before walking on stage by all what is happening in her personal life. She is noticeably different from what we saw on Ellen, almost like she's gone a step backwards, so something may have happened between now and then. But please, don't let her see her own fans lose faith in her. I love her like a family member, and "I'll be there" anytime she needs a friend. She'll always be somewhere on the outside, let's show her that despite her flaws, we love her dearly. I don't know how I would cope if anything ever happened to her.

A hero lies in me (49,514)
by Bill from the UK
| |
|
|
For years, I could take or leave "Hero". I understood why so many people love it, I understood why it became so popular with the masses, and it is of course sang beautifully and sincerely by Mariah. But, like I said, it never really wowed me like some of her other songs do. All that changed when I was facing a very difficult situation personally. I don't really want to go into the details of it here, but I was struggling to find the courage to deal with it, and then "Hero" played on my iPod. I sat back and listened to the lyrics, which I of course know as well as my own name, but finally, after all these years, they struck a chord with me, and I sat there in awe. All those times when we're faced with difficult situations, or adversary etc., we always get through it and live to see another day. The hero within us "comes along" and just carries us through it. Whenever I dread a presentation at work, telling somebody something they don't want to hear, facing something I really don't want to, that hero in me surfaces, and saves the day. I've never had a lyric by Mariah touch me so much before. And I never really noticed how astonishing this song actually is until now. I've always liked it and been extremely fond of it, but now it has been elevated onto a whole other level. We all know it anyway, but Mariah really is the greatest songwriter there is.

Lee TS / Warrior Butterfly / unedited vocals (49,403)
by Bill from the UK

Lee TS, I cannot thank you enough for sharing the unedited MTV Unplugged concert. Unplugged has always been my most favourite album of Mariah's, and this was a complete joy to listen to and such a treat. For years, I have thought I heard the "la la la's" towards the end of I'll Be There, but thought my ears were playing tricks on me. They were there all along but just moved to the background in the editing lol. So many times I wanted to post about that but worried about coming across as a fool haha. And Warrior Butterfly, the Tattoo Club showcase was brilliant. I never knew she performed Someday (can see why it was left out as they seemed to screw up a couple of times haha). These were great to listen to, thanks for posting, both of you.

Duets (49,301)
by Bill from the UK
| |
|
|
I'm in two minds about a duets album as well. If Mariah re-sang her parts rather than the copy and paste of the Memoirs duets then I'd be alright with it, especially if she changed the songs up to be in keeping with the duetting artist's style. For instance have a song have a more swing/rat pack vibe if Buble joins her, electronic if Gaga etc. That said, I would be happy with an archive duets album: example track list below, probably missing some major ones. 1. I'll be there with Trey 2. Endless love with Luther 3. One sweet day with BIIM 4. Whenever you call with Brian 5. When you believe with Whitney 6. Chain of fools with Aretha 7. Hopelessly devoted with Olivia 8. Stop in the name of love with Diana 9. With you I'm born again with John 10. Against all odds with Westlife 11. Yours with JT (album exclusive) 12. a few other unused Memoirs duets

#1's track list (49,270)
by Bill from the UK

Good playlist Edward. Mine would be: 01. New song 02. New song 03. Touch my body 04. Don't forget about us 05. We belong together 06. Against all odds 07. Thank God I found you 08. Heartbreaker 09. My all 10. Honey 11. Always be my baby 12. One sweet day 13. Fantasy 14. Without you 15. Hero (live at MSG) 16. Dreamlover 17. I'll be there 18. Emotions 19. I don't wanna cry 20. Someday 21. Love takes time 22. Vision of love 23. New song 24. New song 25. All I want for Christmas is you I'd have 25 songs as it's her 25th year. Also I chose a live version of Hero as that is what Mariah originally wanted on the album but I think the execs pulled rank on that decision and stuck to the regular version. I'd also have the original Fantasy. As much as I love the remix, the original is amazing in its own right.

Updated #1's album (49,265)
by Bill from the UK
| |
|
|
I love the new album cover, I hope it remains as that. I could never like the original because, as beautiful as Mariah looks, her photoshopped legs just look out of proportion and it grates on me lol. I hope the album will include AIWFCIY, it would then be a definitive collection of hers. It would also be cool if the International version included Without You (and maybe Against All Odds) as they were #1s across Europe. I think it coming with a blu ray concert of one of the shows from Vegas and some new tracks (Save the Day, Kick Rocks and Hope Street) would complete the package.

I loved loved loved the crowd's reaction to Mariah giving them tickets to her show. Still smiling from ear to ear now. I think this time in Vegas and the new #1's album is an absolutely fantastic way to celebrate such a wonderful and successful career. Well done Mariah. You worked so hard for this, went through so much, suffered both personally and professionally, yet you still shine and glow like the star that you are. I love you so much.

Mariah and Nick (49,139)
by Bill from the UK
| |

|
We all know Mariah had a tough upbringing. It affected her in ways we can't even begin to imagine ("I gravitated towards a patriarch, so young, predictably"). The terrible and sad irony of her marriage ending is that two young, three-year-olds are now likely to be raised single-handedly by their singer mother. Just as she had been.

First Mariah album / Shelly (49,074)
by Bill from the UK
| |
|
|
Out of interest, what was everybody's first Mariah album they heard? Mine was Music Box back in 1993. I had the cassette, and I remember listening to it on my Walkman in bed at night, and just loving the artwork and the excitement of seeing she had other albums I knew nothing of (there was an advertisement for her other albums in the sleeve). Until then I thought Dreamlover was her first song. Hi Shelly. Well I was doing a round the world trip, I was definitely in Australia during March as it was the "wet season" up North, and Las Vegas was my last stop, so it may have been in April. I can't recall if it was early, mid, or late though. I will find out and let you know. I remember being somewhat perplexed that Celine never sang Think Twice during her show. That, and Titanic, were the only songs of hers I knew, and Think Twice was #1 in the UK for weeks and weeks. Maybe it wasn't as popular elsewhere.

Abraham / Shelly (49,051)
by Bill from the UK

Abraham, I have been listening to You Need Me more than ever, to try and make up for the times that you skipped it hehe. The mood and sonic style of the song really reminds me of Chains by Tina Arena (or that should really be, Chains by Tina Arena reminds me of You Need Me). It has that kind of edgy, angry vibe to it. Great stuff. Shelly, we are the same age. I wonder if we were at Celine's concert the same night? Wouldn't that be weird (exclamation mark).

Shelly / Vegas show (49,026)
by Bill from the UK
| |
|
|
Hi Shelly. I loved your "A New Vision" post, that would be a great title for her show. I went and saw Celine at Caesars back in about 2004, and I'm not even a fan of hers. I appreciate she is a very gifted and intelligent singer, but I always found her songs and delivery very "same-y". Anyway, I went because of her reputation, because it's Vegas, and why not? The show she put on was absolutely fantastic (exclamation mark). With my hand on my heart it was one of the best concerts I have ever attended. Mariah will have a cash rich casino fund the thing, no expense spared. I think it will be incredible and I will certainly hope to book a flight out there to witness it first hand (funds permitting of course).

It's odd you say that about the debut album as I have been listening to it for the past few days too. I go through stages of not playing it for a long time, then bingeing on it for two weeks. Please give "You Need Me" another chance though, I think it is great. I love the way she sings "before you act so hastily", it just sounds so good each time. I've now switched over to the singles and am listening to the TGTBAW remixes and Someday remixes. I love the 12" Jackswing Mix of Someday.

Danny (48,975)
by Bill from the UK

Hi Danny. Well, I read an article that the artist Shakin' Stevens rakes in £250k per week in December because of his Christmas song. That's really the only song of his that sustained longevity. Mariah's AIWFCIY would eclipse that as it is far more popular and reaches across the globe. Plus, her other radio hits like Hero will bring in a steady stream of income due to the royalties she would be paid.

#1's (48,952)
by Bill from the UK

I think another #1's album would be great, but as the Facebook picture implies, also include AIWFCIY. That would be a concise and relevant summary of her career to date. Not many artists can put out a #1's record and then have to update it several years later. I would also of course love some new tracks alongside it to promote it.

Thank you for answering about the avatar. It's a great picture of her. I nearly changed mine to something else, but I've had ABMB for so long it would feel odd lol. As for songs I'd love Mariah to cover, there are only a couple. The main one is Reasons by Minnie Riperton, not many know it as her most famous song is Loving You, but Reasons is amazing and has the best use of her upper register. I'd love to see what Mariah would do with it. I'd also like to see her cover The Impossible Dream and Amazing Grace.

You're right. It was mentioned in the book by Chris Nickson that the Thanksgiving concert had several parts re-filmed, and he praised the patience and perservance of the audience. It was quite noticeable as certain shots from Hero and other songs, usually close ups, are of a totally different quality and as you rightly say her hair has clearly been fixed up again for the shoot. I agree though, it honestly didn't need any dubbing in my opinion as it was a great concert, but who knows what the sound quality was like in 1993, maybe they had to be dubbed due to audience noise and acoustics etc. It would explain why it was common practice throughout the industry.

by Bill from the UK

|
I agree with you Angelo about the anniversary, it's a big stretch of the imagination for Mariah to embrace that era, especially as she is now very cagey about her age and doesnt like dwelling on how long she's been around. But, there is of course "the art of letting go" and just celebrating a great and deserved achievement. Plus it would make us all so, so happy. Hi Shelly, thank you for the message and Happy New Year to you. Lots of love.
