Hi Darryle, I love your idea to commemorate the debut album. A few years back a "Legacy Edition" of the debut album appeared on release schedules, but never saw the light of day. We never knew the content, but the other Legacy Editions Sony released for other artists included the original album remastered with a second disc of new material - either unreleased tracks, live songs, demos, remixes etc. As for Mariah buying into the project, I'd love her to but she does have some issues with that period. She hates the videos (which I'm convinced is why The First Vision never got a DVDS release outside of Japan), and she said the demos were better than the finished product because everything was over produced. It'd be great if she herself remastered the album and stripped the songs down to how she originally wanted them to sound. How cool would that be?

Hi Angelo, yes all the concert DVDs are dubbed. Mariah would have sung live at the actual event but then they would have been "tidied up" afterwards with her either re-singing parts or the vocals being fixed up in the studio. But this practice happened across the entire industry and was not unique to Mariah, everybody did it.

Those videos are incredible, thank you for posting. I agree, they really need no comment as the performance speaks for itself. JTTW was totally awe inspiring. Those high notes were beautiful and she sang with such passion and energy. What a woman and what a voice.

I hate to say it but I think the picture is fake. Vision Of Love was written after she signed her recording contract, and all the sources say her demo tape only had five songs on it (Alone In Love, Someday, All In Your Mind, Prisoner and Do You Ever Wonder).

Baby, huge thank you for posting the acoustic AIWFCIY. That was incredible. I think those unheard ad libs will be from the original '94 session, as they are in keeping with the original, and also the "I don't need nobody else" ad lib was used in the Low Sunday dance remix which came out in 2008/09 (I forget when). Loved the jazzy kind of scatting she started doing too. Every time I play the song, it is over too quickly, and I remember as an 11 year old when I first had my cassette single of it, how I wished so badly to know what else was sung after the fade out. I guess between the Low Sunday and this acoustic version, I now know. Thanks again, a real pleasure to listen to.

Response to Randy (48,566)
by Bill from the UK

Sorry Randy but I disagree. There are hundreds of artists who have had multiple #1 records which I cannot name, remember, or recite. We all know Mariah's songs because we are fans of her music. I have never once listened to a Rihanna song. If she played on the radio, I would not know it was her. Yet, I understand she is popular, has had a huge string of #1 records in the US and around the world, and know of her by her reputation alone. If you haven't worked out that Mariah's signature song is AIWFCIY then I don't know what to say to you. Everybody I know both knows and loves that song. And if you honestly value the opinions of stand up comedians and Perez Hilton over your own sound and reasonable judgement, then that's the way you're programmed. I know what I enjoy, and why I listen to Mariah every single day of my life. I think she is the best musician ever and I love her dearly. I don't have to have the media big her up for me. I don't have to see her at the top of every chart to recognise her ability. Mariah is always grouped in the same category as Celine, Whitney, Barbra, Diana etc., so I don't know why you are thinking she isn't. I don't think you have anything to fear about Mariah's legacy, she has already gone down in history for her performance in the 90s, and people will remember AIWFCIY in its timeless state, not the one and only ropey performance she did of it in 2014. Whitney did several shockingly bad renditions of IWALY, and nobody's bothered.

Thank you for the O Holy Night and AIWFCIY videos. The show looks like it was absolutely incredible. The NY fans are so lucky, I wish I could have been there. OHN was beautiful, and AIWFCIY had me smiling from ear to ear. Her voice sounded wonderful and she seemed in great spirits despite the bad press she got the last time she performed. I knew Mariah would deliver. There's a light in her that shines brightly. They can try, but they can't take that away from her.

Rockefeller / Nikki (48,238)
by Bill from the UK

I knew after watching the performance the type of comments I'd see on this fan site. Rather than dissecting every single note (and I agree Nikki, an isolated track without the music is borderline bullying of her), can't we just enjoy it for what it was meant to be? A fun, festive, live performance? Mariah gets ripped apart by the media every time she performs. Yet she gets back on the saddle time and time again, when a lesser person would have given up. And why? For her fans. She loves us so much, it's time we reciprocated.

MCIIY (48,085)
by Bill from the UK

Great to read all the posts about this great album. Mariah described MC as Christmas by day, and MCIIY as Christmas by night, and she was completely right. The second album is much more chilled, mellow and I always listen to it with the lights low and a (half) bottle of wine by my side. The original songs are brilliant. I hope for "Under the Merry Christmas III" (great title someone mentioned a while back) the entire album is self composed Christmas songs, as she has a great ability to capture the different moods, feelings and timelessness associated with the season.

Mariah has never said who the muse was for Subtle Invitation, The Roof, Did I Do That, Babydoll, Circles, and I Wish You Well (along with virtually every other song in her catalogue), and likely never will. All these posts are speculation. Almost everybody on this message board has attributed Thirsty to Nick, when Mariah never has, and probably never will, say who it is about, and when there are just as many reasons to support it not being about him as there are reasons to say it is. Now That I Know is perhaps Mariah realising she was more to Tommy than just a bit on the side, but again, we will never know for certain. It's fun to speculate and guess, but very annoying when people present their theories as facts. You don't know anymore than the rest of us.

Slipping Away theory (47,920)
by Bill from the UK
| |
|
|
I don't know a fan alive who doesn't love this song. There can be many reasons why a song is left off an album. One common reason back in the 90s was space. Cassette tapes and vinyl could only hold so much music, and both were popular formats in the mid 90s. Artists have also left tracks off because they felt the song didn't fit with the rest of the album. The theory with the most credibility though is buried in the song's subject matter. It is clearly about Tommy and their tempestuous relationship, so maybe he made the executive decision to leave it off, or maybe she wrote it for catharsis purposes with no intention of ever having it grace the album. Marian did comment that she had to fight tooth and nail to get Looking In on the Daydream album, but we'll never know until Mariah says why, if indeed she ever does. One of life's mysteries that one of her greatest songs remains relatively unknown, unheard, and unloved.

Baby / Emotions (47,851)
by Bill from the UK

Thank you for posting the Emotions clip from Adelaide Baby, I agree it was an absolutely fantastic performance and the best rendition of that great tune in a long time. I can't stop watching it. Like you I am praying and praying that Mariah brings her tour to Europe. We miss her so much, she hasn't been here for years now. I loved how Mariah really went for the "when you're looking into my eyes" line, as even in the 90s she always toned that line down.

Walter (47,804)
by Bill from the UK
| |
|
|
Why are we speculating? Walter himself said what happened. Mariah separated from Tommy, and as far as she was concerned, you were either on his side or hers. Walter's hands were tied because he was under contract at Sony. She felt he should have considered their friendship and partnership ahead of that, but he didn't. He said all this in an interview not that long ago. She's moved on and her music grew in breadth as a consequence which was a great thing. It proved that nobody was indispensable. Sure, I love songs like And You Don't Remember, When I Saw You and Anytime You Need A Friend, and I wonder what work they'd be doing now had they remained friends. But at what cost? No We Belong Together, Fly Like A Bird, Can't Take That Away? I feel the same about Ben Margulies. Had their partnership remained, maybe we'd have no Hero, All I Want For Christmas Is You and One Sweet Day.

Hero in Singapore - wow (47,631)
by Bill from the UK

That performance of Hero in Singapore was f-ing brilliant. I haven't heard her pull off such a fantastic rendition for about 10 years. Like Anthony, I feel like I could cry. She sang with so much passion, so much heart, so much beauty. I cannot stop listening to it. This is why I love Mariah. There is nobody like her. Nobody could ever come close to matching that beautiful, beautiful rendition. I love her more today than I ever have.

Skip, I thought the same thing as you. I honestly believe that track listing was genuine, and I am so curious as to how The Art Of Letting Go album sound and felt in its original format. As much as I love the album we ended up with, it'd be great to hear those unused songs.

Butterfly re-shuffled (47,446)
by Bill from the UK
| |
|
|
With Butterfly's anniversary only passing recently, I wanted to share something I occasionally do with albums I like. I play them on Shuffle, and see what the new track listing order is, and see how it works. Being born in the early 80s, even now I still divide every album into "sides". Here is what Mariah's album looked like, it was quite a different experience. You all should try it.
My all Fly away Honey Fourth of July Babydoll Whenever you call
The beautiful ones Butterfly Breakdown The roof Outside Close my eyes
Close My Eyes made quite a good closing number, and for me having The Roof towards the back end of the album just seemed to make it shine all the more. Mariah's albums don't usually open with a ballad so being drawn in with the silky My All was great.

Mariah's age (47,437)
by Bill from the UK
| |
|
|
The "extra year" all came about after a journalist for People magazine I believe, said Mariah's drivers license had her birth date as 27 March 1969. In Tina Arena's autobiography, she wrote that when Tommy Motolla met her, he said to her "you're 22 now" when she was actually 27 at the time. She didn't go with it, but maybe it was good marketing at the time to have her be 20 and born "in the seventies"? This could explain why Mariah is forever dodging the question about her age (anniversaries, eternally 12 etc.) and hasn't admitted what her age is since divorcing Tommy. Maybe she doesn't like lying so just avoids it altogether. The one thing to say all this is nonsense though is Mariah's mother naming her Mariah after the song "They Call the Wind Mariah", which was out in 1970. Unless of course that was an elaborate hoax to explain her great stage name, and she was really called Maria or something, but that is far fetched and something one of my friends theorises about. I'm sure she was born in 1970, named after the song, and is 44. [Webmaster: See also the How old is Mariah? article from 2007 and the How old is Mariah Carey? 40 or 41? article from 2010.]

Harry Nilsson (47,393)
by Bill from the UK
| |
|
|
The funny thing is Harry Nilsson wasn't even the original artist. It was originally done by a hardly known group called Badfinger, of which Ham and Evans were members. Nilsson changed the arrangement of the song quite noticeably, and Mariah covered "his version", if you will, much like how Michael Bolton mirrored Mariah's arrangements on his Christmas album for Joy To The World and O Holy Night. Lots of people think Nilsson is the writer and original artist because he wrote all his other songs and it was him who made the song popular. Before it was just an album track by an unknown group.

Whoa whoa whoa, hang on a second. ABMB is one of Mariah's greatest songs, and like AIWFCIY, it's a song both die hards and casual fans love. It changes the pace, it's mellow, popular, nostalgic, and I love it when Mariah gets the audience to join in with the "doo doo doops" at the end. I have on many occasions listened to that one song on repeat for hours on end. It never gets old and has never dated. It really is one of the best things she ever did.

I don't think I've ever read such poisonous messages on here before in all the years I've been visiting this website. If Mariah does "go the way of Whitney" as you so eloquently put it, I would be happy that I was supporting her when she needed her fans most of all, as opposed to running her into the ground and kicking her when she was at one of her lowest moments personally. I would never speak to anybody the way you have spoken about Mariah. You can get your point across without being callous and mean spirited. Anthony believes your posts are a display of "love"? I'm sorry but that is complete bullshit. You're just a troll and probably loving every minute of it.
