Obviously medicated (108,845)
by Carlos from Brazil
| |
|
|
I think it's really safe to say that she is using medication. I used to take some anti depression remedies and it really kinda "takes your soul out". It's necessary for the case, in terms of "you need it to get better" to a certain point and then maybe reduce or get rid of it when you get well but it really lets you on a deplorable state. You just go through life and the emotions like it's nothing. Mariah's last answer to the reporter when asked about what a popstar like Katy has to do when you get hate or something really tells it all. She said "don't pay attention and move on". I think she hasn't really stopped and thought about her situation: her voice, the lost of her family. It's like she just thinks "let's move on" and then she just goes through life.

Show some humanity (108,825)
by Manuel from Germany

Dear people on this board, have you no heart? Honestly the negativity on this board is painful. Do any of you know what it's like to be her? It's waking up every day and remembering you're not allowed to just be. That if you sound tired, you're "washed up".
If you're quiet or having fun with yourself, you're a "diva".
If you gain weight, it's magnified - literally - with a lens. And now, if you're medicated [...] and are dealing with the loss of family members and the end of a relationship, you "had a stroke"? WTF?
Being Mariah is having your voice - the very thing that saved you - become a measuring stick they beat you with. Your voice - your literal lifeline - being turned into a battlefield. Every note Mariah's ever sung has been dissected, including on this board. Praised, worshipped, mocked, measured. And when your voice is that good - the pressure to never slip is inhuman.
I guess for her lip-syncing isn't lying. It's surviving. It's choosing to still show up when the heartbreak is louder than the applause. When she may rather feel like grieving. How many times has she stood in front of thousands of us while screaming inside? She's been singing through breakdowns, betrayals, miscarriages, racist industry BS, and a horrible childhood and youth before she was even famous. And yes, sometimes she shows up because she signed the paper, not because she is feeling it. But she goes on stage anyway, because she knows that somewhere you might be out there. Some kid like she once was, staring at the ceiling, praying to be loved. And if at this point her lipsync can keep that kid alive another night, she'll wear the diamonds and fake it. She doesn't do music, she is music. This isn't a job. It's not even a career. It's how she breathes. If you call yourself a lamb, you should know as much, because that's what drew you to her. And even when she tries to disappear, the music doesn't stop coming. This industry effed her over, again and again, pimped her pain, tried to own her. When you're a legend, they forget you're human. So quitting might look like freedom to you, but to her, that would feel like letting them win. Because that voice, even cracked, even lip-synced, even trembling is still her. And as long as she's got it, she'll use it how she chooses. Not for the charts. Not for the Grammys. Not for those greedy ones of you who see her as a product that is to remain Daydream Mariah forever. For her. And for the ones who still need it. And if you don't need it, leave. She is an artist. She knows that when she walks on that stage, somebody in that crowd remembers who they are, because they see her still fighting to be. She was never supposed to make it. A mixed-race girl with a broken home, bipolar disorder, and a five-octave range?
Please. But here she is. Still here. Still selling out stadiums. Not because the industry let her.
But because she refused to disappear. So have some humanity inside you and stop projecting your unresolved issues on her. Imagine yourselves in her position. When she is ready, she will speak her truth. Until then, enjoy what she has to offer now, or enjoy her legacy. It's all there. She is as real as it gets right now, medicated and all. That is her, a human being. And she is still showing up, looking like a goddess, selling out, going number one every year. Love to you all.

Mariah will perform on a stage that is build like a [Brazilian] flower called "Vitória Régia" that is very pretty. It will be globally televised so I hope you guys check it.

Although it is almost impossible for Mariah to ever be shady to Beyoncé, according to this interview where Mariah said her concept was stolen, Beyoncé's album was dropped two months before that.

Refresh my memory please, did Taylor ever drop a demo version for that first? I can't remember, I didn't use to keep up with TS back then. But I remember her name being in the mix along with Beyoncé about who Mariah could be referring to. I know even later down the line people said she copied Mariah's "from the vault" visual. Where originally Mariah did some "from the vault" release and then Taylor used a similar visual for her re-record series? But Covid wiped out my memory so clearly I am missing chunks.

Haha I think even as a lamb that would have been too much for me. It baffles me why a story teller like Mariah has such weak videos. Speaking of JD, I am reminded of the Facebook TAOLG release and how it ended up being the wrong version and Mariah wrote her iconic "I'm on the bathroom floor" meltdown post.

I'm dead, not an another cookie and beverage. Hahaha. Ya I really love that her recent collabs have been with young female artists. Especially her accepting Ariana (who has always fangirled over her). Previously Mariah had an image that she's jealous of younger female artists (which I'm sure is annoying for her because she really lives in her own world and has only ever reacted because people keep trying to compare everyone to her or as her new replacement). So I'm glad she's now confident enough to embrace her role as "mother" (the gen z version for icon, not a real mother haha) and has harmonized in whistles twice with Ariana, worked with Latto (even after Latto originally said she didn't know about Fantasy) and so on. I love her in women empowerment or bad bitch type songs (yall know what I mean) so I would love some more of those with female collabs and ofcourse some fresh male collabs too. And when I saw collabs I mean relevant people not Steflon Don and all the other people she collaborated with that adds no value to me.

Seriously? (107,735)
by Mimi L. from Empower Your Highlighter
| |
|

The key word/phrase is "majority of her success". So not all of her success is contained in the 90s. The list isn't for "who peaked in the 21st century". Mariah wasn't irrelevant in the 21st century. She had a second song of the decade, she had multiple #1s, she broke multiple records including becoming the the artist with the most #1's, she is probably the only artist who ended and started multiple years at the #1 position, 7 top 5 albums , 11 top 20 singles, multiple accolades and other stuff I can remember at this point of time. Also AIW single handedly is responsible for how now more and more artists make Christmas albums early on into their careers. And what do you mean she's not a pop star? Of course she is. Pop isn't only bubblegum pop, it's any artist/music that has been popular at a certain point of time, Billboard named her the greatest popstar of 1991. Anyways all of this to say I'm not saying she should top the list, could have been one of the honourable mentions.

Brazil concert (107,404)
by Carlos from Brazil
| |
|

The song was definitely fueled by a soap opera that was quite popular at the time called "Viver a Vida". The song was the theme for the character called Luciana who got on to live on a wheelchair after an accident. Her story is quite dramatic and she has a romantic relationship that was very beautiful and the song played on almost every scene she was. That is the main reason. The second is that Mariah is really loved here for those arena ballads. There are many older fans and older people in general here that really prefers her singing "Without You", "Hero" and I guess IWKWLI was a return for her ballader days and a less R&B/urban sound.

I am glad that you enjoyed yourself. You know she had to give a special surprise at the end and sing her signature song there. I often wonder why IWTKWLI resonated so with the citizens of Brazil back in 2009-2010. Carlos, do you know why? It had 27 weeks at number #1. It will probably always be the biggest song of her career in Brazil.

It was absolutly a surreal experience. I felt like I was leaving my body. I've been a fan for 20 years so to see her in person was a life changing moment. I felt like she was like really real. Her voice is so pretty, her songwriting is awesome and she is one of the prettiest women ever. The Brazilian outfit and the butterfly dress is now iconic. I went to the São Paulo concert and it was as amazing as the Rock in Rio show, even better. Her Portuguese is cute. She came back for the IWKWLI without her shoes haha. 50k people singing with her. It was the happiest day of my life.

Thinking of you MC at this impossible time (107,284)
by Brad from USA
| |
|
|
The day one loses their mother is the worst day of a person's life. No matter the circumstance of their communications at the time. It ends an entire part of your life irretrievably, divests one of the purest of loves and can dull the sense of what life is and holds moving forward. But things do continue on, even if all the colors of life are forever muted. I know this because I lost my beloved mother nearly two years ago. And this is how it has felt for me to continue forward. I cannot speak to what it is like to have such loss compounded by the loss of another family member such as a sibling. I think most of us can only imagine the sense of unmitigated sadness and loss. I hope we can all be the better of who we are and only offer MC the unspoken words of support and unparalleled love she has always sensed from all of us, the truest of her forever fans.

You know I'm on team Bye Bye so I could care less about a viral Migrate moment. I never knew it. Everyday of my life. I wish. I wish I wish I wish as time goes by. Wait. I have an idea. All great TikTokers that sing can sing that final ad-lib and get cute little kids to come out from behind them and wave bye bye to the camera and sing the backing parts. Now that's a viral moment.

That dress is really everything. I don't know about the Met Gala because I feel the dress is a little too simple for that but for a tropical concert it was perfect. She gave Carmen Miranda vibes with the sandals too. Since she is coming to Brazil this year I hope she continues with this island/sunny looks. Also the hair and make up was very beautiful. I am super excited she is coming here guyyysss. It will be my first concert of hers.

I agree, unfortunately when Mariah belts I feel a "childlike tone" that I don't know how to explain. Like she is trying to make her voice "sound young" but it comes out strained and screechy.

Portrait remixes (106,511)
by Joachim Agerup Løkkevik from Norway
| |
|
|
I actually like the remixes, it's some old school Mariah remixes for you, gave me nostalgic feelings, but yes, her voice is very strained. Her breathy vocals are as pleasant to listen to as always, but her full voice and whenever se wants to jump up an octave, you can hear she is struggling, it takes her much effort to just sing one or two words in the upper register and it sounds more like shouting than singing.
Yes, maybe she should do an album with all the studio magic you can think of, and she can lip synch her way through her performances. We are very harsh against Mariah for her use of prerecorded tracks which seems to be 90% of her live shows these days, but the general public really don't seem to care, it's been a long time since I've seen YouTube videos bashing her lip synching. It seems like the people attending her concerts don't care and is just in for the experience.
Anyways, the Portrait remixes is new music from Mariah I'm actually going to play this summer, such a nice summerly vibe to those remixes.

Made for Me remix (106,475)

I think with "Yes And" they made the song super loud and with Made for Me I felt the opposite. Mariah is fading behind Muni in the chorus. Like an echo. I also felt the whistles were off, dry and weak.

Autocue (106,331)
by Carlos from Brazil

I noticed that on instagram but honestly it's probably laziness. I bet they wrote the words on a cardboard in the middle of her concert and made her read the lines on a good lighting. It's not like she rehearsed the thing and kept forgotting. I know it's not your point but as hysterical as the people here are they are going to diagnose Mariah with Alzheimer in the next posts.

Autocue (106,330)
by Jamie from UK

I do worry about Mariah's inability to not do anything without autocue. She has increasingly been seen on stage constantly referring to the autocue, something she never did before, and her latest instagram post about the soul beach festival she can be seen doing the same. Is she in a position where she can't ad-lib a short 15 seconds video or even worse remember the words to her own songs. There could be more to it but just wondering what peoples take on it is.

Lipsynch (106,209)
by Carlos from Brazil

Since Mariah apparently is lipsynching that much, has anyone ever did a compilation video with her vocals on the same songs sounding exactly the same? I mean, honestly asking. Because I imagine she doesn't have a different version for every song on every show night. Curious.

The new show (106,174)
by Carlos from Brazil

I think if I was in Mariah's situation as a singer/legend with the most difficult songs ever done to sing live I would also use my pre recorded vocals just as she seems to be doing. Looks and sounds like she is using vocals from this year maybe recorded in a studio to be used on tour. As WW used to say. It's still her voice, you know she can sing.
