Stevie Wonder honours Martin Luther King Jr.

The Superstition singer wrote his first tweet and shared the powerful video at the exact time the civil rights activist was pronounced dead after he was shot in Memphis, Tennessee in 1968. "On April 4th, 1968 at 7:05 p.m. central time, Dr. King's life was cut tragically short. 50 years later a need for his dream to be fulfilled is far greater than ever," he tweeted. "Share your dream and post your own Dream Still Lives video. Spread love... spread hope."

The 67-year-old opens the five-minute video, titled The Dream Still Lives, a nod to King's famous I Have a Dream speech, telling viewers, "Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s teachings and works have led me and the world to give peace a chance. Although Dr. King left us 50 years ago, his dream is still within all of us."

The video then switches to celebrities and public figures explaining their dreams, including Mariah Carey, who wishes for "all God's children" to be "proud of who they are", Whoopi Goldberg, who dreams that "we don't have to keep explaining to each other that we're equal" and Lupita Nyong'o, who hopes for a world where "the colour of your skin and the money in your pocket doesn't determine the value of your life".

The video features clips from Barack and Michelle Obama, Common, Samuel L. Jackson, James Corden, Serena Williams, Naomi Campbell, Chadwick Boseman, Cher, and Robert DeNiro. In her clip, Katy Perry calls for "more acceptance and more tolerance", Eva Longoria calls for "equal pay for women", and Demi Lovato, who has been open about her battles with depression, hopes for society to break stigmas surrounding mental health.

Meryl Streep wishes that "the long arc of history that Dr. King talked about bends a little more sharply towards justice in our time", while Janelle Monae hopes "those in a position of power stop abusing it", Elton John calls for a world free of AIDs, while Harry Styles wants a world where "everyone is just a little bit nicer to each other".

Paul McCartney, Jamie Foxx, Kesha, Nick Jonas, Bruce Springsteen, and Jon Bon Jovi, among others, also recorded their dreams.
