In preparation for May 6th (41,936)
by Bill from the UK
| |
|
|
1990 facts: "I don't wanna cry" was intended as the second single before the whole "Love takes time" drama happened. 1991 facts: The album was originally titled "The Wind". "You're so cold" was intended as the lead single. "And you don't remember" was intended as the fourth single but plans were dropped after "I'll be there" took off. 1992 facts: "I'll be there" was a last minute addition to the set list (replacing "Vanishing"), decided the evening before the performance. 1993 facts: The original version of "Dreamlover" was deemed too street for Mariah's audience, so Walter Afanasieff produced and re-arranged it accordingly. The original version appeared on the Australian single under the guise of the "Bam Jam Soul Mix". 1994 facts: A fun, mock song was recorded called "He carves the roast beast", which was Mariah messing around with the Price sisters. 1995 facts: Rumours around why "Slipping away" was kept off the album are either due to the lyrical content strongly resembling Mariah and Tommy's failing marriage, or because it was thought as too R&B for her audiences. 1997 facts: Walter and Mariah ended their professional relationship during the making of the "Butterfly" album. As such, many of the tracks he was involved with are unfinished by his standards. He citied "My all" and "Whenever you call" as sparse ballads missing his usual schmaltzy flair. 1998 facts: The original album cover was a black and white shot of Mariah in the limo from the photo shoot for the single cover for "The Roof". A second disc, featuring remixes was planned but scrapped. This second disc became the promotional "12's" box set. So disc one would have been "1's" and disc two "12's". 1999 facts: Mariah completed the album in three months (as opposed to four years.) A duet with Lauryn Hill entitled "Crystal ball" was written but never saw the light of day. 2001 facts: The "Firecracker" sample which Jennifer Lopez stole can be heard on the remix of "Loverboy". Da Brat sings her diss to J.Lo to the Firecracker melody (hate on me much as you want to, you can't do what the bleep I do, just be imitating me daily). "Lead the way" was a leftover track from "Butterfly". I don't know anymore about her recent releases. Any of you all got anything else others may not know?

Lol, I do agree with you. Sometimes I am guilty of writing too much. When scrolling through this board I read the titles and if the post is long I'm like "Whatever, I'm getting cheese fries."

Lmfao at your comment regarding There's Got To Be A Way. Hopefully that will change soon, I don't know. This is the second out of the five that I've heard on the radio, following #Beautiful, which I should listen to soon because it's been in my head the past couple days.

Overall he sounds fine, but does anyone else think his autotune at the beginning of YME borders on horrid?

What does she want (41,931)
by S from England
| |
|
|
Hi lambs, hopefully everyone is having a great 2014 so far. I wanted to contribute to the discussion on Mariahs' recent chart under-performance lately. It is my opinion what Mariah has to do to become very relevant once again. She's essentially been in this business since a lot of us were just toddlers. If she wants to really spice it up and get a hit #1 single, she has the resources, experience and determination to do it. But that's just it. I don't think she's really that interested in that kind of path right now. Her team would have made her aware of the under performace of YME (although it's still early days), just like they would have told her about Triumphant. She is aware. If Mariah knows that she does want another good era, I think the following need to be exercised pretty soon: new image - slender, classier and older, a bit of weight loss, and elegant modern look. Music: less urban, more dancey - uptempo, fun and catchy for both young and old. I heard she's worked with Mike Will Made it, hopefully it's uptempo. And lastly, she needs to be everywhere. Like it or not, if she's not out there working and promoting it to every show that will have her, she will struggle with the charts. These will all ensure some moderate hits and songs that don't jump out of the iTunes 1000. Just my two cents, I'm open to what others think so fire away. Take care.

George Michael (41,930)
by enwar00 from usa
| |
|
|
As far as George Michael, that's come up here before, and forever yes to that collabo. Both are so talented and to me I feel he's like the male version of Mariah when it comes to singing. I do remember she was a fan. So weird that when Mariah came out he was still hot shit. I'd never heard that there was indirect beef but I guess it makes sense because Listen Without Prejudice was like 1990 when his drama with Sony was going on. That's one of my favorite albums ever.

by enwar00 from usa

No, I've heard nothing of Maxwell and Mariah collaborating, though that could be pretty dope. Also I've been waiting for BlackSUMMERSnight for what 5 years now? I loved the first of the trilogy. I remember reading that the three would be released quickly after each other. That obviously didn't happen. I personally would prefer that over Trey Songz, no offence to him intended.

No more promotion for YM(E)? (41,928)
by Edward from USA
| |
|
|
Apparently Mariah won't be promoting YM(E) anymore. Mariah tweeted: "On my way to finish this album. And I'm not coming back untill I'm done." If Mariah keeps on looking for new songs to be on the album, she won't ever finish it. At this point, I don't think she'll cook a super masterpiece to be ready two weeks before the released date. It is time to wrap it up Mariah. It seems to be this album has shifted direction many times now, that's why we haven't had a proper album name, or a tracklisting.

Work with new people Mariah (41,927)

Can't Mariah work with Beyonce's writers and producers because everything she releases seems to be what the public like right now as her music is always popular in the charts. I just want Mariah to be like that again.

MTV Unplugged 2014 (41,926)
by Eduardo from Mexico
| |
|
|
Just take a look of her now, it is just exactly the same situation back to early 90's when "Emotions" was dropping from the charts and "Can't let go" and "Make it happen" didn't reach number 1, the people were questioning Mariah's live skills so she performed a MTV Unplugged then became the diva and marked a new era of success for long. She needs a new MTV Unplugged asap.

You're Mine out of Hot 100 (41,924)
by Lainsky from Philippines

Depressing, yeah perhaps all the critiques are true for it is struggling. This is not the way a Mariah single from an upcoming album usually performs in the chart. Still I love it. It's nice and it's very her. I hope the next one will be a success.

New single (41,923)
by Rashidi Rahim Rick from Malaysia
| |
|
|
Mariah and her new team needs to release an uptempo single. YME had passed its peak. So far we haven't heard any news from her on her promotional activities that involving live performance. I really wish Mariah would copy all the promotional activities during TEOM era, particularly the promotional activities for WBT. I still want to give YME a chance just because I love the song. She can even release an alternative video (the one in the backgroud during her BET performance) just to hype up the song again. She even can do a video of her singing with the back up of an acoustic guitar just like Love Story at MTV with the red dress. There's so much more that she can do.

Schedule of events before May 6 (41,922)
by this_is_qhm from the Philippines
| |
|
|
Only 2 months to go before the album release date, so we could probably expect a title by the end of March, a tracklist by early April, then the cover reveal by the middle of the month. I hope she doesn't fall victim to an album leak before the release date like what happened to Ciara weeks before she was supposed to drop her album last year. She should also share an album sampler before April ends and stream her album on iTunes the week before it's released. Sure, the latter move would increase chances of web-rips, but knowing Mariah's current image and popularity, she could benefit from a little re-introduction.

New era worries (41,921)
by MissunderstoodAngel from United states
| |
|
|
IDK lambs I feel like I'm going to be let down like I was with the post EOM era. Sloppy image, careless interviews, zero promotion, basic boring songs, and album release delays. I feel bad for saying it, but it is the truth. I wish there was a way us lambs can communicate with Mariah and tell her to step up her game already, we've had enough.

You're Mine (Eternal) (41,920)

I've never heard this song on the radio. I've heard #Beautiful and Triumphant by accident more times than I've heard You're Mine. Heck, I've heard "There's Got To Be A Way" more often (2 times) than You're Mine (0).

Ariana Grande (41,919)
by this_is_qhm from the Philippines
| |
|
|
Sorry for the barrage of (long) posts I have decided to unleash upon this board. Haha. It's just that I probably wouldn't be able to post for quite some time. I like Ariana. Sure, she can never hold a candle to Mariah, she's more like Mariah-lite. Her debut album somehow filled in the void that Mariah left when she delayed her album release 4 times since 2012. She sings with the fluidity of young Mariah, and although her whistle notes are not quite as stratospheric and her voice lacks the heft and richness of her idol's, no one can deny that she's talented. I'm fine with her "aping" Mariah's style, whether it's intentional or not. I'd rather her look to Mimi as inspiration than waste her talent on some generic top 40 production and add to today's pile of musical garbage. Besides, all the comparisons between them actually benefits Mariah, because Ariana's young fans who haven't got a clue who Mimi is will probably look her up and discover her formidable discography. I wouldn't mind a duet between them in the future. That would be nice, like a "passing of the throne" kind of thing, like what Madonna did to Britney. A lot of artists have been hailed as the "new Mariah" when they started out. To me, at least vocally and sonically, somehow Ariana fits the bill best. Don't get me wrong, there will never, ever be a "new Mariah". But if she ever gets an heir-apparent, I'm glad it's Ariana. She just need to work on her enunciation and songwriting more.

You're Mine (Eternal) (41,918)
by this_is_qhm from the Philippines

I like the song. I love its ethereal vibe. I agree, though, that it doesn't sound fresh at all. It's got mid-2000's stamped all over it, which is currently a bad thing in today's musical landscape. It also sounds like an amalgam of her past hits with its theme and overall sound. What it has going for it are its hypnotic chorus and a final note that reminds everybody who's queen. I know Mariah isn't one of those artists that predictably choose the best single material to precede her albums, but if I choose to think otherwise and YME is considered among the best of the lot, then I'm a bit worried about the whole album. So I'm just gonna shrug off that doubt and believe she will deliver as she always does.

I can't even think of a better explanation for the poor performance of Mariah's releases lately. A lot about the success of music nowadays relies on timing. It's about staying hip and current and changing with the times, as if being almost transient. I really has become much trickier than before. Music trends also tend to be unpredictable in this digital age. A decade ago, they were more obvious. In 1998-2001, bubblegum teen pop was all the rage; in 2002-2004, urban was pop; that segued into the domination of R&B from 2005-2008; followed by EDM in 2009-2011. Over the past two years until today, there seems to be no trend at all, what with all the chart-toppers ranging from straight up pop (Katy Perry), to adult contemporary (Adele), to retro-tinged (Bruno Mars), to hip-hop/rap (Mackemore and Ryan Lewis) to even unconventional "indie-ish" genres that woudn't be usually considered "number-one material" (Gotye and Lorde). Maybe that's why it's harder for Mariah to catch a break. People are looking for something fresh, unexpected, and even unusual. Now that the album is almost done, I hope Mariah and her team came up with innovative sounds that strike the perfect balance between appealing to a wider, younger audience, while not alienating her core fanbase.

Maxwell? (41,915)
by Mara from United States
| |
|
|
Has anyone on here heard MC recorded something with Maxwell? He put a few things on twitter sometime in January about it. I would love to hear it if it's true. Also, George Michael is releasing a new live album from one of his concerts on March 17th. I always wanted to hear them two together. GM has recorded with just about every other diva (Aretha, Whitney, Mary J, Beyonce) but MC. Mariah used to love GM long before George accused Tommy and Sony of not promoting GM to focus more on Mariah. I do know that he has no longer held that against MC from an interview. I just always wanted to hear their voices together. But I wonder about this Maxwell duet and if it was already recorded?
