Re: Signal to MC (96,842) (96,846) by T from USA
She's being managed by Roc Nation, why can't Jay get a good Beyonce duet happening? There are ways around the ageism and label constraints. Mariah is so much more than just Christmas music but I'm afraid that is all she will become.

Re: 20th #1? (96,841) (96,845) by Bobby A from United States
I think it will make it to number #1. It has been number one on iTunes since yesterday. I heard it on V103 radio in Atlanta this morning.

Where's Ari? (96,844) by Rashidi Rahim Rick from Malaysia
I just love how Mariah said it. How I wish Mariah would donned a ponytail though.

From what I see, Oh Santa. is #1 on iTunes in Canada. And #2 is All I Want for Christmas is You. She is dominating.

Mariah is well aware that working with artists of the day will help her chart. Anyone with a brain knows this. What people have failed to notice is, unless it's a Christmas project, the label ain't paying for an A list top tier artist to appear on her albums. They wouldn't pay for Cardi to jump on A No No. if you notice, Epic has only put money into anything Christmas related. They pull out all the stops and pour money and marketing into it because they have proven, guaranteed monetary returns. Caution was the first album that Mariah got an embarrassing low amount of support from the label and their budget for radio was restricted to AC stations only (no other radio formats were sent With You to even have the option to play) or Urban AC for A No No months after the project was released and already lost any kind of possible momentum. Had they put the money in and sent GTFO to all formats it would have made a splash and peaked interested because it was quite shocking to hear Mariah use a cuss word in a chorus and yet sound so good. I have a sneaking suspicion that either A, Ariana was a second choice to Kelly Clarkson who may have pulled out because of scheduling conflicts or B, because attaching her to a Christmas song was the only way the label would cough up money to pay for both Ariana and JHud and also get Apple TV to fund the video/performance. Not sure if this is a strategy for Mariah to prove to the label that if they pay for top tier collaborations, that they will make a nice profit in return. I'm hoping she gets success off this collaboration so that the label starts giving her the budget she needs for her next project, especially when it comes to radio promo and marketing. Mariah is not a streaming artist and needs to be played and pushed on major radio formats to see any type of future success along with a high profile feature. All she needs is one hit to get the funding and backing from the label that she deserves.

Do you think Oh Santa remix will reach #1? Anyone know how it is tracking?

The special (96,840) by Kyle Anthony from United States
I was expecting to enjoy it as a fan, but got so much more out of this special. I forced a lot of friends and family to watch it with me at midnight, from our separate quarantine caves. Not only did they love the special, most of them had emotional responses to it. My mom bawled like a baby.

Andrew's post was spot on, the quality was impeccable. Everything looked and sounded great. Also have to agree about Sleigh Ride: camp perfection.

The new vocals and tweaked arrangements were shockingly good. Mariah's rested voice is honestly the best part of 2020. I've been listening on repeat out of enjoyment, not duty.

Highlights for me:
1) Sleigh Ride
2) O Holy Night - I thought Mariah's original was perfect. The updated version is even better.
3) Oh Santa - We all knew that harmonic whistle was coming, and it didn't disappoint. Bliss.

Re: High note harmonies (96,833) (96,838) by Stacey from USA
I think I prefer this new 2020 version better than 2010. I have always been indifferent to Oh Santa. It don't hate it but I don't jump to it either. The addition of Ari and J-Hud adds a nice depth, more texture to a pretty straightforward song. Well done MC. And yes, those high note harmonies are perfection.

Rumour has it (96,837) by T from USA
Has anyone else read the rumours that the girls didn't film Oh Santa together and that's why there are no pics of the tree [sic] of them together (like Snoop and JD) and no official single cover photo. Rumour is that Mariah only agreed to do it if it was shot separately from Ari and JHud.

Signal to MC (96,836) by Warren from Trinidad & Tobago
The success of the Oh Sants remix in just one day should send a clear signal to Mariah that she needs to work with the younger popular *female* artists. Would love to see Gaga, Katy Perry and whoever else she can tolerate and obviously who she "knows".

And the views it's racking up is staggering. I think I check every few minutes and it goes up by 100k.

Jonas Kaufmann (96,834) by Geri551 from UK
Jonas Kaufmann, the world's most popular living tenor, is the latest performer to record All I Want For Christmas Is You for his new Christmas album. It's an interesting rendition, by no means my favourite version, but it is a testament to the extraordinary genre crossing impact of this song.

I know Mariah can't really see beyond or function outside of the R&B/Hip Hop world that is her comfort zone, but as she and her team explore further ways to exploit this song and cement her legacy and cross genre appeal in the years to come (especially in a huge market like Germany and Central Europe where Kaufmann is a huge star on a par if not surpassing Mariah), some form of collaboration may be an interesting idea.

I'd love Mariah to do a concert like the Christmas in Vienna special that Diana Ross did in the 90s, recasting her Christmas albums in a live setting with an orchestra.

High note harmonies (96,833) by Terna from Nigeria
Sounds kinda catchy doesn't it? Lol. Anyways, this new version of "Oh Santa" has become my favorite and that's saying a lot because I love (all caps) the original version from 2010. The new solo high note run Mariah does on this version is just sheer power, and those harmonies with Ariana just wow. Who is singing what on that harmonized section though they sound so identical.

New recordings - Ariana bores me (96,831) by Geronimo from USA
I really enjoyed the medley, even though Hero is far from my favorite song. I'm really appreciating her approach to texture and timing toward the end. "Oh Santa" is a pretty trite song, in my opinion. I'm glad Jennifer Hudson figured out how to slow the melody down just to give some shape to a melody on the verse. But that song really highlights how boring a singer Ariana Grande is - not because I don't think she can do "more" on a track of her own, but because outside of her discount version of Mariah idiosyncrasies, she just doesn't have much to offer except professional skill.

Re: Oh Santa! collaboration (96,804) (96,830) by this_is_qhm from the Philippines
Yup, that whistle on the original version has always bugged me. As for Ari's vocals, to be fair, if you listened to her last 3 albums, especially her most recent one, she has adopted an overall softer approach to singing (probably for vocal preservation). That hushed, close-to-the-mic vocal made up about 80% of Positions. Yes, she may have been instructed to sing softly for Oh Santa., but she did hear the original, so that alone should have given her a good idea of just how lively she should have done things. Plus, even if she has a powerful, agile belted voice, by nature it just doesn't have the same heft and natural volume that Mariah's voice has, let alone JHud's.

Re: Oh Santa! collab (96,822) (96,829) by this_is_qhm from the Philippines
Exactly. Considering how much many dreaded this to be a cut and paste version of Mariah's 2010 vocals with a little Jennifer and Ariana added in, what we actually got is a huge relief. Oh Santa has always felt like a girl group track and I believe that it does manage to sound like that with this new version.

Magical Christmas (96,828) by Jono from USA
I guess all the memes and jokes about Mariah Carey "defrosting" every December to collect her yearly check is true, considering this is the most she's moved in years. In all seriousness, this was a cute and fun special, and just the right amount of camp. Loved that she reworked the songs so we weren't just getting rehashed vocals. "Sleigh Ride" was absolutely fabulous. Wished the overall special was a little longer as the storyline felt a little rushed, but I'm assuming the pandemic restricted what could be done. After a long and challenging year, having this sort of escapism was nice.

Mariah has made my Christmas (96,827) by Deedre aka MiTodoChop @HBF from Canada
The special was adorable start to finish. The camp was so much fun. If you can't be silly at Christmas there's something wrong. Mariah poked fun at herself and it was great. I've never watched an Apple production I have not been impressed with. This is top notch. I love the Oh Santa remix. I understand some won't like it, but I truly feel it was well done by all. J Hud brought her style. The Supremes thing is cute. Those whistle notes being in harmony were such a nice display of mutual respect. Life is short, enjoy it. Merry Christmas everyone.

Re: Oh Santa! collab (96,822) (96,825) by Edward from USA
Considering there wasn't much to do with "Oh Santa" in terms of adding two other artists to the mix, I'm pleasantly surprised. I actually enjoy it. Hopefully Mariah can return the favor to Ariana and engage in a proper duet with her.

Oh Santa! collab (96,822) by Stacey from USA
I know some will nit pick this and that. Totally fine and their choice. I know I've done my fair share over the years. This time, I'll leave that job to those who want to. For me, I'll just say this: I liked it. It was festive. Mariah and Ariana harmonizing their whistle was a nice nod of respect toward each other. The new vocals were great. J-Hud sounded great. It all worked. I'm just gonna enjoy this moment and have some egg nog. Merry Christmas everyone.
