Brett Ratner congratulates the couple on engagement

After a whirlwind romance, Mariah Carey and James Packer announced their engagement last week. And now the man whom is thought to be responsible for pairing the Australian casino magnate and the American popstar, American filmmaker Brett Ratner, has congratulated the happy couple on their exciting news.

Brett, who was once rumoured to be romantically involved with the Hero hitmaker, took to Instagram on Sunday to post a sweet flashback image of himself and Mariah. "So happy for Mariah Carey on her engagement to my best friend and partner James Packer, the Pac in RatPac. Love you both," the Hollywood heavyweight captioned the image.

The image shows Mariah clinging to Brett as she hugs onto his shirt as both parties beam excitedly towards the camera. The much younger pop diva is wearing a plunging gown which shows off her ample assets. Her hair has been styled into tight curls whilst she sports a flawless application of makeup featuring a bright red lip.

Fans quickly commented on the image, sharing their congratulations for the couple, as well as pointing out that it was in fact Brett who introduced the pair. "Thank you for being a great friend to both of them and for bringing them together," wrote one user. Whilst another commented, saying: "You the real MVP (most valuable player) and real friend for hooking them up." Daily Mail Australia has contacted Brett for comment.

It is believed that James, 47, and Mariah,45, were introduced by the mutual friend, with sources telling TMZ at the time that James had been actively pursuing the Grammy Award Winner and mother-of-two. Brett, who has worked with Mariah on a number of her music videos for songs including 2008's Touch My Body, 2009's Obsessed and 1998 track I Still Believe, has had a long-running association with the popstar.

Their relationship has been so close in fact, that in March last year, Brett's representative was called on to slam talk of a budding romance between him and the singer, to People Magazine. His agent said the talk was "ridiculous". Brett has also recently gone into business with James, establishing production company RatPac Entertainment.

In April Deadline reported Brett and Jame's company has thrown their support behind Carey's idea for an upcoming Christmas movie, and entered talks with New Line on her behalf. Brett has an impressive portfolio of films under his belt, with the Miami-born director having worked on the Rush Hour films and X-Men: The Last Stand.

Last Thursday a spokesperson for Mariah confirmed her engagement to James telling Daily Mail Australia: "Yes the couple were engaged tonight in New York."

Both James and Mariah have learned a few lessons in love over the years with the pair having pieced together broken hearts from failed past romances. Mariah fell out of love with her rapper husband Nick Cannon in 2014, but has since dusted herself off and seems to have found stability with Packer.

The singer and America's Got Talent host Nick married in the Bahamas in April 2008 after just six weeks of dating and a 10 year age difference. She and Nick, with whom she shares four-year-old twins, Monroe and Moroccan, confirmed their split in April 2014 after months of speculation. She was also previously married to music executive Tommy Mottola - 20 years her senior - when she was 23.

For his part, the son of erstwhile Australian media mogul Kerry seems to have opted for a completely different type of women to he has previously romanced. In 2013 he shocked the business community with the news that his second marriage to Erica, considered stable and loving, had collapsed.

They parted ways on amicable terms for the sake of their three children; Indigo, six; Jackson, five; and Emmanuelle, two; with the entrepreneur telling Forbes magazine: "Business is good but my personal life is a disaster." A joint statement read: "It is with great sadness that Erica and James Packer announce their separation. We remain deeply close friends and incredibly proud parents and our children are our priority going forward."

The split spelled the end of a 10-year romance with the Gunnedah, New South Wales-born model, whom he married in 2007 after an on-off romance for three years. Another striking brunette model who has played an intricate role in Packer's life was his first wife Jodhi Meares. He married the striking bikini model in 1999 but their marriage lasted only until 2002, with sources saying he wanted children, whilst she did not.

The pair remain on good terms after their separation and Jodhi, 44, has since gone on to marry photographer Nicholas Finn, 28. Before that, he was engaged to another model, Kate Fischer, but they, too, called time on their romance and she was left a smart Bondi pad and a rumoured $10million settlement after their five-year relationship and two-year engagement.
