Merry Christmas II You (40,033)
by Chase from USA
| |
|
|
I think this album perfectly complements the 1994 release. They each stand well separately, but they work even better together. Both are consistent, soulful, and (to use one of Mariah's favorite terms) festive. I think the 2010 album is actually a bit more mature and classy, though its predecessor will always be the best-loved original. Give me either, and I'm happy.

No Austin, it was actually 1991 (40,032)
by Marcel from Montréal, Canada
| |

The video for that Hark! The Herald Angels Sing is from back in 1991, I have an old recording (VHS tape) that my aunt recorded and it's from that year and the ring she wears is not any kind of engagement ring or that. She actually said she bought that ring to compensate she hadn't one when she graduated or something like that, cannot really recall exactly why she bought it but she mentioned it in one old interview. If you check the video not even closely, you have to notice her makeup, her eyebrows, hairdo is so 1991, Walter is not playing the piano (something he did for her always since 1992 to 1997) and the guy guiding the chorus is actually one of her back then 3 male backup singers, before she got the fab-five in 1992.

Lee and Victor (40,031)
by Austin from USA

Lee, that video is from the release of Mariah's first Christmas album (1993/1994) while she was married to Tommy Mottola, her first marriage. Victor, R. Kelly announced a collaboration with Mariah while he was at the American Music Awards, which was last week, where he performed with Lady Gaga. On another topic, I really enjoy Mariah's new song, "The art of letting go". While I agree that it's not radio material, I appreciate the release. Mariah seems to be making the music she wants. It's obviously not a single to launch the new album. If her predictions of a release date are right, we should be getting a new, proper single at the beginning of the year to start the promotion. I'm sure Mariah will release a stellar song to impact radio and media. I'm happy with her new direction and hope the whole album is influenced by the stylings of #Beautiful and "The art of letting go". To the person that suggested "The art of letting go" is commentary on her record label, I find that assumption interesting. If so, it's a very clever way to release her frustration.

1991? (40,030)
by Lee from UK
| |
|
|
Are we sure that version of Hark The Herald Angels Sing was from 1991? It seems to me she is wearing a wedding ring and correct me if I'm wrong but she wasn't married until 2003. I guess it could be an engagement ring.

R Kelly talks new Mariah Carey album (40,029)

Hi guys. Am I interpreting this article correctly? Did R Kelly say that he and Mariah will collaborate on 2013 AMAs? That would be fantastic!

Tyler/ Merry Christmas II You (40,028)
by RadChad from United States
| |
|
|
I kinda agree with you. I'm gonna go on record right now and say I definitely prefer "Oh Santa" over "All I Want For Christmas", to me it's more fun and festive. "Oh Little Town Of Bethlehem" and "The First Noel" are both very beautifully angelic and spiritually touching. They both have an intimate feel to it, almost as if they recorded her singing a lullaby to dem babies one night. "Christmas Time Is In The Air" is a standard classic song while "When Christmas Comes" is a soulful classic. The whole album has so many great moments. I was almost scared when I found out she was going to do a second Christmas album (because first one couldn't be touched), but it came right on time and nearly three Christmases later I couldn't be more thankful she did. Overall I would say they're equally great, but I connect more to MCIIY spiritually. Now we all know how epic the first album is so I won't even go into it, but I'll just say MC forever changed "Oh Holy Night" for me, I have yet to hear a soul on earth top her rendition, it's just beyond. Happy holidays everyone.

My top 25 Mariah Carey favourite tracks (40,027)
by Loris from Italy
| |
|
|
For me these ones are the best tracks of her entire catalogue. No track from Rainbow, Glitter, Charmbracelet and E=MC2 made the final cut, while #Beautiful, which incorporates influences from the Motown Sound and the Beatles, stands at no. 8 as one of her timeless songs, and surely the best pop song of 2013! Also, Slipping Away, a B-side, is included (no. 4) as her most underrated and less known track, in Music Box or Daydream it would have fit perfectly. 25. Anytime You Need A Friend 24. Someday 23. Music Box 22. Emotions 21. Vanishing 20. Daydream Interlude 19. Underneath The Stars 18. Always Be My Baby 17. Looking In 16. Honey 15. I Don't Wanna Cry 14. Fantasy 13. Hero 12. Make It Happen 11. If It's Over 10. We Belong Together 9. My All 8. #Beautiful 7. Butterfly 6. H.A.T.E.U. 5. The Roof 4. Slipping Away 3. Without You 2. All I Want For Christmas Is You 1. Vision Of Love

Memorable Christmas performances (40,026)
by Eternal from Italy
| |
|
|
I think both Christmas albums were equally good, but the first one, IMHO, just had a more timeless selection of songs. The second was more creative in its song choices, like incorporating hip hop into "Here Comes Santa Claus". Both albums get me into a very festive mood. Since Christmas is less than a month away, I thought this unforgettable performance of "Hark the Herald Angels Sing" could be a good start to the countdown.
Her vocals in this 1991 performance was killer, classic MC. Warm, low yet soaring at the same time. It really showcases her talents. I actually prefer this live version than the one she recorded for her Merry Christmas album. What do you guys think?

Merry Christmas II You (40,025)
by Tyler from USA
| |
|
|
It's that time of year again to start bringing out the MC Christmas catalog. I wanted to see if I'm the only one who prefers the second Christmas album over the original. For the last 3 years MCIIY has been my go to album for the holidays. Mimi's voice is amazing on this album between the subtle soft register ( First Noel, CTIITAA) to insane belting moments (When Christmas Comes, OCAYF). I really cannot pick out a favorite track but Little Drummer Boy always seems to get the most plays. That track is so beautiful from the strings, the choir, to Mariah's breathtaking built up.This album flows effortlessly from song to song and there is not one song I skip. I know the original is a classic but it's all over the place at times. While I love the original, I feel it lacks the cohesiveness, maturity and production as the latter album. In my opinion, MCIIY is one of Mariah's best albums yet.

Very interesting interpretation, and if you're right, it's a hilarious way for MC to introduce the album if you ask me. Such a classy way to take a dig at the useless fuckers over at IDJ.

Randy / R Kelly / Mike Will Made It (40,022)
by Mimi L. from Empower Your Highlighter
| |
|
|
Oh wow, I never thought of it like that. That letting go can be about the label and not just a person. Makes sense that way too. Nice interpretation. I guess Mariah did indeed succeed in keeping this song open to different meanings. I'm excited about the R Kelly collaboration. Might be a sultry duet. There are rumors MC also worked with Mike Will Made It, he seems to be working with a lot of people currently. I wonder what he cooked up with MC. A dream collaboration for me would be Michael Jackson and Mariah Carey (I know they did the charity single, but not like that, I mean like a romantic song or something upbeat I don't care). MJ and MC are the greatest singers ever. Alas this is something that won't happen.

TAOLG (40,021)
by Randy from USA

It came on my playlist and it just hit me like a ton of bricks. This song is not about Nicki Minaj. It's not about Tommy Mottola. This is a thinly veiled goodbye to IDJ. I am no longer under your dominion. Watching you fall (down the charts). I feel like such an idiot. That it took me so long to realize this.

All I can say is yes to this. R. Kelly is like Babyface to me, he's magical when it comes to song writing. I wonder if they did a grown and sexy song or an inspirational one. I hope their song makes it to the album.

Autotune (40,019)
by Mimi L. from Empower Your Highlighter
| |
|
|
Mariah hardly uses autotune. She doesn't need it, but even in some rare cases when she does, I don't mind it. I mean come on the woman can sing! And pretty darn great at that. So she's got nothing to prove, that's why the occasional autotune in songs like Migrate, I'm That Chick, Obsessed doesn't bother me.

Star magazine (40,011)
by Mimi L. from Empower Your Highlighter
| |
|
|
I wouldn't take Star magazine seriously. I heard Star and National Enquirer come up with ridiculous stories about celebrities, especially couples, all the time. Their other favourite target being Brangelina. But what worried me is the Barbara Walter and the recent radio interview. I watched the Walters interview with Dembabies when it first came out, and I kinda forgot about it, but yesterday I came across a snippet where when Barbara asked if MC trusts Nick, she said "sometimes". Then MC went like when he is nice, he is great. So Barbara asks like is he bad at other times, and MC is like "he's a man Barbara". And in the recent interview also she seemed a little upset about Nick. I really hope I am wrong, because I think they are an adorable couple, and have two adorable kids. If anything is wrong, which I hope is not, I hope they work it out.

Thanks for reading. I'm also writing an article about how underrated Glitter is. I love that album. The only thing that worries me is that similar things in this era are happening that happened right before Glitter came out during her "emotional breakdown". The Facebook manifesto is similar to the voicemail messages she left during the Glitter era etc.

Mimi L. / favourite song off the catalogue (40,008)
by R&B Junkie from Poland
| |
|
|
I agree about the underrated songs. Here's a list of my favourite songs by MC (the feeling as of November 26, 2013, it changes as the time goes by). Mariah Carey: All In Your Mind Emotions: So Blessed and Make It Happen MTV Unplugged: Someday Music Box: Dreamlover Merry Christmas: AIWFCIY Daydream: (exception) Slipping Away from the ABMB single Butterfly: The Roof, Breakdown, Babydoll Rainbow: Heartbreaker tied with Crybaby Glitter: Don't Stop, If We Charmbracelet: TTR, Irresistible TEOM: Shake It Off and Stay The Night E=MC2: Cruise Control, I Wish You Well and O.O.C. Memoirs: Betcha Gon' Know, Ribbon, It's A Wrap MCIIY: Here Comes Santa Claus Other songs I'd like to attach to this list are: Lil' L.O.V.E., Sweetheart, and remixes: Fantasy, MyAll/StayAwhile. You can see this list has also songs that aren't widely recognizable by the publicity. Current work didn't hit this chart because I am still impressed and that could make me less objective (beause I love them all). What is the point: the success of e.g. WBT doesn't make me love the song more than I'd do without all this crazy 14 weeks at #1. It's like we musn't love rich people just because they are so. Just a piece of advice. Love to you all everybody!
