Mariah among nominees for Songwriters Hall of Fame

Mariah Carey is world-renowned for her five-octave vocal range but the chart-topping diva also has a prolific pen. The five-time Grammy Award winner is among the 24 musical acts who've been nominated for induction into the Songwriters Hall of Fame for 2020.

Carey, who has writing credits for many of her chart-topping songs - including the now-perennial holiday hit "All I Want for Christmas Is You" - has been nominated before: she was up for the prize in 2018 but didn't make the final cut. That year, she presented the award for producer and frequent collaborator Jermaine Dupri.

Among the two dozen nominees are 11-time Grammy Award winner Pharrell Williams and his Neptunes partner Chad Hugo, R.E.M., OutKast, Patti Smith, Annie Lennox and Dave Stewart, and The Isley Brothers. Only six of whom will ultimately be inducted into the Hall during its 51st annual ceremony in New York City on June 11, 2020.

Previous honorees include David Crosby, Jon Bon Jovi, David Foster, Leonard Cohen, Jay-Z, Cyndi Lauper and Missy "Misdemeanor" Elliott. Voting on this year's finalists will continue through mid-December. To be eligible, artists must have to have written their first hit at least 20 years ago.

A native of Huntington, New York, Carey broke through in 1990 with her self-titled Columbia Records debut opus, which sold an estimated 15 million copies worldwide and sat atop the Billboard 200 for 11 weeks. Considered one of the Best R&B Albums of the ‘90s by Complex magazine, all 11 tracks were co-written by Carey, including the No. 1 single "Vision of Love" and its chart-topping followup "I Don't Want to Cry".

With a reported 200 million records sold, Carey has also been largely credited for incorporating R&B and hip-hop collaborations into mainstream pop.
