Re: Caution track (88,025) (88,031)
by B from USA

This excerpt from Est.1997 sums up why Caution should be a single better than I ever could.
"With a seductive yet haunting beat and pristine vocals, it immediately engages the listener. The song has clear tropical influences allowing it to sound current without overdoing it to sound trendy, a line Mariah has always been able to tread well.
Her buttery vocals effortlessly slide atop the slick and cutting No I.D. produced beat. Its chorus might just be the best on the album, it just sticks. Caution is fresh, yet reminiscent of late 90s and early 2000s R&B such as Brandy's Never Say Never (1998) and Aaliyah's self-titled final album (2001), which is also probably why it sounds like something Drake would cook up. Without any specific promotion, the song has managed to become one of the album's most streamed tracks, speaking volumes to its sheer greatness".

The promotion will resume in March when Mariah and Epic release A No No. With With You continuing to do well on Adult Contemporary and R&B radio it's keeping Mariah's name out there and hopefully getting casual listeners to stream Caution. She's back in Vegas so she really can't do much at the moment.

Good points. Well, since I ragged on JLo now I feel like I have to say something nice about her to cancel out the bad vibes I put out. I mean, it is obvious JLo does work really hard and is disciplined. Even though the Motown tribute still sounded bad (to my ears) it does sound like she's been taking voice lessons and trying to improve. She no longer sounds like a dying animal. Also, it's cool that she was able to break out as a singer when she was almost 30.

I listened to some of JLo's hit songs and the only parts that are pleasant are the parts she's not singing. She truly is a terrible singer. Supposedly she's gotten better but I listened to the Motown tribute and it sounded whiny and monotone. This really does prove that having the right image and people behind you can buy you success.
I know that Britney and Taylor and Gwen are not the best singers but they have unique and pleasant (in my opinion) voices. Britney and Gwen have major "it" factor. Taylor writes songs that relate to girls her age. They're not as deep as singer/songwriters of my time (Fiona Apple, Tori Amos, etc) but I still find talent in her. JLo's talent is that she looks good and dresses nice and knows the right people. It's just hilarious to me that she's gotten as far as she has. You proved your point Motolla. Let Mariah have her throne back.

J.Lo (88,027)
by this_is_qhm from the Philippines

In any messageboard, it's popular to rag on people who have done your fave wrong. And I have had my share of that and will continue to every now and then when it is necessary. However, I also believe in fairness and giving credit where it is due, instead of just dismissing someone entirely just because they are not of Mariah's caliber talent-wise or did her wrong in one way or another. Sometimes the rants are valid, but half the time they're mostly just pile-ons that only serve to reveal just how insecure we could be as fans.
Let's get this straight first - while J.Lo did deserve to be in the opening monologue of the Grammys, there is no way in hell that she was ever appropriate to do a Motown tribute - not today, never on any day. However, it really speaks to her management's savvy that she is consistently able to book these high-profile gigs. And for someone who can't sing, she has done remarkably well in music, having her own catalog of hits (albeit some were notoriously stolen), but one cannot deny that her first 4-5 albums had some great material despite being surrounded by tons of obvious and often awful filler.
Sure, one could definitely argue that she is being promoted and marketed as if she were still a newbie, that she still fails to make much of an impact considering that she's practically everywhere, or that she's doing it because she hasn't reached the legendary status Mariah has achieved, etc. All points are valid, but the fact remains that the woman works her ass of. She's even more of a determined perfectionist than Mariah is. She always looks great, she's hella disciplined, and she makes sure all of her bases are covered. Try as much as you want to minimize her contributions to her own success, you'll only end up failing because the proof is in the work - she knows this game really well, she's smart enough to surround herself with some of the best people in the entertainment industry, and constantly plays to her strengths. And while she has made her way to the top with several questionable career choices and moves, she's doing one hell of a job to maintain the level of success she has reached. Promotion and marketing can only go so far.
Mariah, on the other hand, is more of a free spirit and as gone way too far with the "eternally 12" excuse, winging performances left and right and poorly lipping in occasions that really matter. She lacks the discipline to avoid the things that further damage her voice and even struggles to keep her figure on top form. True, she has somehow gotten her crap together over last year and it was glorious to watch her finally back to acting like a legend should, but she also tends to rest on her laurels a lot and is likely to feel entitled. Well, she has earned it, but it does come across as her not caring enough, which is unfair when her fans care too much.
Like someone here previously said, there's something admirable about someone capable of wearing many hats. It shows a hunger for growth and a desire to learn no matter what age you are. I hate to use social media following as a gauge of popularity and impact, but in 2019, that does mean something. It means you're more likeable and relatable, regardless if it translates to actual commercial or critical success or not. It shows that people care, regardless of what age demographic they belong to.
I am happy for both Mariah and J.Lo because they prove that women, especially middle-aged women can run the world when they know what they're good at and keep hustling. Mariah released her best album since 2005 and redeemed herself from what we thought was an irreparable career and public image. J.Lo shows no signs of stopping anytime soon and has been juggling multiple ventures whilst putting most 20 and 30 somethings to shame looks-wise. Let us not unnecessarily drag people down just to put one up. J.Lo is a better business woman, a great dancer and a better actress than Mariah. Mariah is a living legend who can still sing most people under the table on a good day and is still one of the best and most underrated songwriters and creative people around. No point of comparison in the first place.

Yes, when I watched Glitter in 2001 that was my first thought. Sylk in the movie is J.Lo, there are no doubts. Haha. The actress who played Sylk really looks like J.Lo and the stealing of the song was also in the scene. I'm pretty sure that was Mariah's idea.

Although Giving Me Life and A No No and 8th Grade are my favorites from the album, I find myself humming Caution. That might be a sign it's a catchy tune. Can anybody hear the similarity with 7 Rings from Ariana Grande when the track starts?

She has her fans but definitely not hugely popular. I barely catch her on the radio unless it's the 90s ballads ("Without you my all" mainly). The freshest I've heard from her was #Beautiful and that was 2 years ago. Even during Christmas they don't play AIFWCIY that much. Nevertheless, her concert in 2003 from the Charmbracelet tour 73 was fully booked. I believe she has fans but they just don't show it off.

I love this song with every listen. Probably some of her best vocals on the whole album. I wish someone will mash up Cruise Control and Caution together. These two songs are so similiar with the island vibe.

Mariah in the Middle East (88,020)

Does anybody know and can communicate in anecdote or in proxy how popular Mariah is in the Middle East? I know she's easily one of the most popular western artists in Asia and specifically Southeast Asia, and so her popularity in the Middle East might very well be attributed to the Southeast Asian diaspora in that region. But among the Arab population - can anybody speak to that?

JLo's management blind item (88,017)
by Gee from U.S.A. (New York City)

Even with JLo being everywhere she can possibly be musically and her box office draw is not the same as the early 00's. Even when she released her song with Cardi who is a hot commodity the song did nothing. Based on the blind item I am not surprised she is a jack of all trades yet she is a master of none other than being thirsty for the limelight and recognition.

There is no denying that Mariah is miles and miles more talented than JLo. All I'm saying is that being able to dabble into different things is in itself a skill. So not all of us are gifted with Mariah's voice. Do we just sit on a corner and not have ambitions? JLo has proven that you can with hard work and perseverance and that is what I like about her. She is still relevant. In fact, I would argue she is more relevant now than Mariah. Her last movie was a minor hit, made almost $70m worldwide on a $19m budget, she has a whole lot more top 100 songs this decade than Mariah, and had a TV dance show that she herself produced and is helping a lot of dancers have a platform. Mariah and Jennifer is a great way of how to appreciate talent vs hard work and which one wins in the end.

Caution is Mariah's most radio friendly album since E=MC2. With You is a hit on Adult Contemporary and R&B radio and is gaining momentum at both formats and I don't think Mariah or Epic are ready to abandon this project just yet.

It also comes down to the old "you can't polish a turd but you can roll it in glitter" analogy. J.Lo is not talented. She is not musically gifted, nor have any talent as an actor either. She's a great dancer, and of course looks amazing, but that's it. She cannot write a song nor give a stellar delivery of it.

Personally MC is at a space in her career where she has to choose her moves very wisely because the media has always been touch and go with her even during her golden years. Where some of her contemporaries will get praised the media will say that she is desperate or trend hopping. Honestly I like that she is going in her own lane and not trying to be on every award show or red carpet just to be noticed. If she is not promoting her projects I think she should stay low key. Because truthfully speaking we gotta admit even with the highs and lows throughout the years she has been able to remain relevant by doing things her way. Hopefully she can have a successful tour and things continue going in a positive direction.

I can't deny that JLo really puts an effort in everything but that's just another side of the story, because without her management and the people behind her, it will all fall out. Just like what Nikki said, JLo still seems like a striving artist who needs to do everything to achieve certain status compared to Mariah whose iconic and legendary status were already cemented because of her own talent and impact to the industry even after all the downfalls and embarrassment.

I'm back (88,009)
by Rene from US

Hey lambs. I'm back and better thanever. I'm still obsessed with her. I'm her fan I still. I wanted to go to her concert last year but you can't afford it. I live in San Diego and can't make it to Vegas. Family issues and lack of money. I wish I could meet her like someone said let's celebrate her. She's are rainbow girl next door.
Like someone just posted Mariah is being more personal with her artistic integrity and that's her I like to sing sing in shower but I have to act like Marilyn. Like a Maria yet be urban and not urban like Nick. More black than this etc. Tommy was obsessed with her and etc. Have you seen how he defended her and get props. Mariah's background is known as the voice and I feel bad. Even the actor at the end of video Jussie Smollet who is gay is having an oopsie moment. Mariah proved herself as the Sony NY girl her background is that girl who found herself. The girl who plays her in her document series is a Latina who went to army. She only speaks to two nephews and how her dad is black Venezuelan and mom Irish. She's black she Irish her mom went to Julliard. She's Venezuelan. He is from San Diego etc. She dated Luis Miguel Derek Jeter Tanaka etc. She had daddy issues etc. But Mariah is her according. She's our butterfly. Christmas queen be positive and celebrate her please. She went to Saudi where she should be carefully because etc. She has to virginal yet dress appropriate not to gay just think how she is allower there now. Let's home Saudi gets more opera even there. Middle Eastern culture is very male dominated and homosexuality is a sin we love her at least I still do. We love her as a lamb fan should.

J.Lo's "management team" (88,008)
by Nikki from usa
| |
|
|
J.Lo is still being "consulted" by Tommy Mottola. Benny Medina is still her hype man. They can still pull strings for her, spin things in her favor, and hype her. But, I think some are confusing promotion with popularity. J.Lo's management trinity is great with strategy, but that only goes so far. Lopez has to pay them a hefty sum of everything she gets. All of J.Lo's biggest successes were stolen from others. Which is why she has to be seen, heard, and hold down 9 projects now. J.Lo shouldn't have to be promoted as if she's a newbie this late in her career. She's pushing 50 and her years are numbered. Shakira is far more relevant in the Latin community than J.Lo is.
Mariah's doing far better without all the middle men. The only problem being with Jay is that he keeps trying to promote her like Beyonce. Mariah's not a performer and I think this train is going to run its course sooner rather than later. She needs to find her own footing for things that suit her. However, she's also on a label that flat out told her she'd never have a hit again. So, they're not going to invest much in promoting her. "People skills" has nothing to do with this.
