Re: Aretha's funeral performances (83,555) (83,562) by TJ from Norway
I think #metoo had a great agenda at the very beginning, but as you it turned out to something ugly. I still don't think the pastor did something wrong. Let's just agree to disagree.

Music Box songs ranked (83,561) by Stacey from USA
Billboard thinks Daydream continued in the same vein as Music Box, and that Mariah returned to R&B with Butterfly. I'm sorry Billboard, but are we listening to the same Daydream album? Daydream is R&B at its finest.

Hahaha (exclamation mark). So the only song you like I’ve actually now ruined for you. Love it heheh.

The Butterfly Returns setlist (83,559) by Ethan from United States
I hope Mariah's team really thinks about updating the setlist to accommodate all kinds of fans. Seriously, Vegas is a worldly city filled with attractions and foreign tourists. It'd be smart to include Without You to the setlist since it's a global smash hit. I'm sure there will be lots of people who'd attend the show just to see her sing it. I don't really care if she lips the chorus. She's sung it live a few times and it sounds fine. I'd take One Sweet Day off the list. I've listened to it live a few times and it doesn't have the same effect. To me, Daniel's voice is a bit soft for it and Trey is more fitting with I'll Be There. And her voice is not the same as in the 90s so I don't know why she's attempting to sing it again. I get it. It's for the nostalgia and stuff. So please include Without You and When You Believe to the finale before Hero. Take out One Sweet Day please.

Re: Aretha's funeral performances (83,555) (83,558) by Morgan from United States
Nope. Still didn't see it. I didn't see it as groping either if that's how you saw it, okay. If the pastor was white and he said something about their name sounding like something off the KFC menu, it wouldn't have made much sense. Nachos Bell Grande, Grande Beef Burrito, Grande Doritos Los Tacos. Like, seriously?

Attacks vs. miss-steps (83,557) by RibbonB from USA
The Grande grope was a mis step that the pastor apologized for. That moment doesn't rise to the level of what happened years ago when Halle Berry endured a non consensual kiss during a live Oscar broadcast and many practically applauded the clown actor. Here's an interesting article on the divide in the outrage or lack thereof especially in light of #metoo. Poor Halle. Yuck. Everyone should conduct themselves better with respect to others' space. But there are accidents and there are actual assaults. Ariana was not assaulted.

Are you referring to the one after the bridge? She stretched the hell out of that amazingly. I understand what you're saying though. It does seem like she added some extra syllables and now I won't be able to listen without laughing. Thanks Bill. I actually like this one song. Sheesh.

Re: Aretha's funeral performances (83,552) (83,555) by Andrew from UK
The #metoo has a effing terrible agenda: pure man-hating and man-baiting with the added problem that men are being accused and sentenced publically on social media where no wrong-doing has occurred, ie. women are lying or embellishing to be a part of the collective victimhood. It is feminism in the new nasty misandric form. What happened to Grande was ridiculous. That he didn't even know her doesn't mean he should make fun of her name like that whilst grabbing her and moving his fingers over her body, invading her space and being rather odd looking on television. Try this: reverse their races and make the joke about a "black name". Still okay with it? All for humour but that looked physically abusive. Try this: swap Grande with Mariah being treated like that. Still okay with it? It is nothing to do with bandwagon victimhood identity politics. It's about a particular man not being a physical idiot towards a woman, a stranger at that.

Re: Aretha's funeral performances (83,553) (83,554) by RibbonB from USA
I saw it as an unfortunate accident, she is short. But he was a bit too familiar to someone he had never met. But I doubt anything intentional on that stage and in front of his own wife. Awkward though for sure. Ariana might have to learn the "step back, elbow swipe move" for those handsy types, intentional or otherwise. Sad distraction for Ariana and the Franklin family.

Re: Aretha's funeral performances (83,552) (83,553) by Morgan from United States
I don't believe the pastor really did anything. I also don't think the joke was racist. There are a number of "Grande" named items on the Taco Bell menu. He had no clue who she was or what she looked like beforehand.

Re: Aretha's funeral performances (83,549) (83,552) by TJ from Norway
I can't say that the pastor did something wrong with the way he held his hand. Seriously. Metoo had a great agenda, but this is not in that category.

Any grown ups who listen to Grande? Gay guys and women of course haha (ole Martyn went to her concert). I do agree with you though in part: I can't take her seriously. Her music is average and that flappy jaw thing she does is so irritating I am surprised nobody has tried to break it. She should stick to licking donuts. Lord knows she is one. The next Mariah she is not. But I do feel sorry for her with the way that Pastor fondled her and made a racist joke. That made for some uncomfortable viewing.

Re: Agressive music (83,540) (83,548) by RibbonB from USA
When I read his interview, I actually thought it was shade, I just didn't share that. He doesn't seem too invested in the project, IMO. When he quipped, "it's music, it's aggressive", I thought oh no. . Maybe she's gonna drop a mixtape between her fall and winter tour dates.

So Blessed (83,547) by Bill from the UK
Help me out please. So Blessed. Last chorus. Does she sing an accidental extra syllable on the last "amazingly"? Since all time, I have heard her sing "amazing-ing-ly". I sincerely doubt a perfectionist like Mariah would have done that, but please tell me I'm not alone in hearing this.

Re: Aretha's funeral performances (83,543) (83,546) by RibbonB from USA
Agreed about Ariana. The choir was most on point, but I do love the Clark sisters and Gladys Knight was great and seemingly effortless. Chaka did great for not knowing those ten lyrics by heart. Jennifer Holliday gave the best performance that basically got missed at the very end. Aretha was a gift, I'm glad she had a rousing sendoff.

Re: Aretha's funeral performances (83,543) (83,545) by MusicfanJ from Germany
I know some don't like the opinion, but for me Ariana is not a serious artist. For me she's a Disney kid that knows who to copy and how to follow trends. Is there any grown-up who would listen to her music? She's definitely a beauty, and her voice is at best ok. But that's it. Jennifer Hudson is a real singer. She's great. I was listening to Aretha today. That was music from the heart, love every song of her. Not many great artists are left on earth. But the music will live forever.

Re: Aretha's funeral performances (83,543) (83,544) by Morgan from United States
Oh man. She was so mediocre and has no soul. Faith Hill was a screechy mess but I chalk that up to emotions and nerves as she was clearly upset. Chaka's lyric fan was spectacular. I was inspired by Fantasia's gospel rendition of "You've Got a Friend". I could've used a little less of Hudson's screaming but it still brought tears to my eyes. As did The Clark Sisters and the pure emotion of Ron Isley.

Aretha's funeral performances (83,543) by Chicago Lamb from USA
Jennifer Hudson rocked, Ariana Grande was awful. Sorry, a smart singer doesn't do a song unless they can bring something to it. Ariana is cute and all, even competent at what she does. But she had no business singing "Natural Woman". Not what Aretha would have wanted.

New snippet (83,541) by Bobby A from United States
Has anybody seen the video of Mariah singing "I know you thought it was a sample" over and over again? A male's voice can be heard saying "hey Mimi". The video originated from Nick's Instagram with him listening to it with his posse. The beat and vocals gave me chills just listening to her sing.

Agressive music (83,540) by Matthew from USA
The only way JD's description makes any sense is if he meant aggressive production. Is aggressive production on the next Mariah album a bad thing? Not necessarily. If we are being honest, production is king nowadays. It's what's driving most current music. It used to be that vocalists would dial back production so that the vocal could be front and center. But even today's vocalists like Beyonce and Ariana have very "agressive" production. In fact, Ariana's latest album could almost be called the Ariana and Pharell album, since his production is doing the most on quite a few of the tracks. So if Mariah gets aggressive with it, she would only be doing what is current. There are other reasons she might lean hard on production for the next album. If the production is doing the heavy lifting, she can take it easy with the vocal. Also, her lover and confidante is a dancer. It's likely he would give her positive feedback on music with aggressive production, since that would give him and the dancers a little more to do than her past songs allow. On the negative side, it does mean those expecting the 90's ballad queen where production is dialed back for vocals will be disappointed. But given her vocal inconsistency lately, that might be a good thing. In any case, I am very ready for the next chapter.

Respect vs ridicule: the narrative of Mimi (83,539) by Andrew from UK
I wrote recently that Mariah has become so used to playing the Mariah Carey characature she developed when the voice started to crack that she is afraid to stop doing it. I believe this is true. I think she has lost any semblance of introspection and is unable to fully see how she is viewed by the world in terms of respect vs ridicule. This fixed-mental-grinning, head-tilting, good-side-only-showing, shoulders-back-tits-hanging-out, tippy-toeing-with-man's-hand-guiding, champagne-swigging, tacky-shit-flashing, clown-make-up-wearing, toy-boy-shagging characature should go. The public may know her for it, but that doesn't mean they respect her for it. The tabloids only feed the public what they want. Mariah is hopefully still a decent, grounded, pleasant person underneath. When she looked to the sky during the Dickhead Clark debacle I saw someone with no pretence, no bullshit, nothing to hide behind. She needs to find that humility again. That surely would be "The Reinvention of Mimi": doing away with all the crap and making people respect her as a person, not just for her music. Which, frankly, is becoming harder and harder to rely upon as the years pass by. Were I MC's manager, the years approaching wouldn't pass the way they've come to start.

With Vegas starting again, I think she had no choice but to not go. Although she did send white roses in a form of a cross and a beautiful note.
