Article: Mariah spent Mother's Day weekend in Westchester (106,431)

I was thinking the same, there maybe be conflicted feelings there and Mariah may have felt indebted to her mom for helping her learn and polish her singing and she must have looked up to her as a singer, but on the flip side there may have been a strain from Patricia becoming jealous of her own daughter (hence the "you'll be lucky if you become half a great singer as I am" - not an exact code) and the 911 incident along with other incidents we don't know of that may have happened that later down the line Mariah realized were abusive or cruel. It's sometimes easy to confuse abuse with tough love/care especially when she has been primarily living with Pat the whole of her childhood. She probably grew up and realized she doesn't need that negativity. Also maybe behind the scenes her mom didn't support her through the mess Morgan and all put her through and she felt betrayed. Mariah still gives her mom credit where it's due. She probably just realised as she had her own family that her own was a bit messed up.

Sometimes there are two sides of the same coin. I mean, even though Mariah has always given her mother props for her encouragement, there must also have been differences and difficulties in their relationship. At this stage of Mariah's life, her global assessment may incline more to the negative or negligent aspect of Patricia's role as a parent. I'm speaking from experience in this regard.

I'm not buying any of it. You don't record a duet with someone you portray as a bad parent in an interview. When Mariah started her Christmas shows at Beacon Theater, I personally witnessed the strong relationship they had. It wasn't just for show, Tommy wasn't involved, and her mother wasn't even on stage. She was simply there to support Mariah. After the show ended, I saw them hugging and being very affectionate.
Mariah's mother was never depicted as exploiting Mariah for money, yet there's ample evidence of Mariah experiencing severe mental strain, culminating in a nervous breakdown during the "Glitter" era. According to Mariah, she just needed rest - indeed, she needed some 911 rest alright.

Actually Mariah's mother doesn't live in Westchester any more. She lives in a retirement home in Florida. Mariah sold the Westchester house.
They don't get along for all the reasons stated in the book. And more. Mariah tried to paint a picture-perfect view of her family in the early days yo maintain a care-free crossover image that wasn't threatening to middle America. Over time, she cared less about that, particularly after Allison sold stories, and particularly after she had her own children which made her reassess her own childhood disfavourably.

I think she is smart with not rushing the album. Look what happened to Justin and J.Lo - people are sick of "old" stars, especially if the material is just bad and boring and not current. Mariah keeps pushing r'n'b sound which has its public but people these days want fast tempo and those Dua Lipa dance light tunes etc etc.
So, either she will put an amazing album which is going to be work of art (right catchy singles, amazing videos) or she is going to swallow her pride and adapt to new trends.

Has no one read or hear about Mariah's relationship with her mom? There's a late '90s interview on Oprah and you visually see how uncomfortable Mariah is with her mom.

I think Mariah made it clear in the Oprah interview for the book and of course in the book itself where the rift comes from. When Mariah was exhausted, mom was unhappy her cash cow was sleeping and not working, and when they began arguing she calls the cops and has her arrested. They basically chased her around New York before that, trying to get her back to work. It's pretty obvious they were trying to have her declared incompetent as a money grab-mama and Morgan. The instability of her family is a big part of why she married Mottola. At first, he isolated her from that madness.
Of course they played nice for the camera in a highly produced special. Watch it again sometime, knowing what we know now. Mariah was extremely coached in those days, and everything was designed to make her appealing to a broad population, which of course worked extremely well.

I will never understand the sudden disdain Mariah developed for her mother. Her mother was a significant presence in her life, and Mariah often praised her. It was her mother who encouraged her to say, "When I make it," instead of "If I make it." Referring to her mother as just "Pat" after all these years feels both strange and sad to me. While Patricia may not have been perfect, she certainly doesn't seem like the monster Mariah portrays her to be.
I know she has never forgiven her for calling 911 during her highly publicized nervous breakdown. For some reason, she blames her mother for everything that followed. However, I believe Patricia may have saved her life, as Mariah was definitely acting very erratically at the time.

I hope they have reconciled. I remember Patricia being so proud of her daughter in the outside porch mother and daughter segment during the Proctor Theater concert video. She will have only one mother and should cherish her while she's on this earth in spite of what she did or didn't do.

#Beautiful (106,417)
by Bobby A from United States
| |
|
|
During this week 11 years ago #Beautiful was the highest debut for on Hot 100 at #24 and then it stalled at #15. I had forgotten that it was a year later the MIAM was finally released. The infamous Wal-Mart leak really changed things in 2013. I am sure Def Jam was expecting #Beautiful to be song of summer. It sure had potential when it was released, but it just didn't have that "umph" it needed to rise higher on the chart. Maybe a summer TV series like ABC's Mistresses tie in would have given #Beautiful that high profile exposure it needed to be a bonafide hit summer song.

Mariah's voice (106,414)
by Malcolm from Asia
| |
|
|
Remember way back 2016/2017 when we used to criticize every performance? I don't know but as I rewatched her performances, it sounds good to me compared to now. I know that she's not getting any younger anymore but whenever I see her Vegas clips, it's a bit sad to see her lipped almost 90% of the show and remember that she used to showcase her belts once in there few years ago but we didn't appreciate it as much that time. I think now is truly the end of an era where we will not be getting any "great belts" anymore, at least concert/performance-wise. I think she now accepts that her voice is fragile than ever that's why she's doing her best on the lipping with the rerecording of her vocals and better transition which I think is finally doing her good since the general public seems to buying it.

Why Mariah Matters (106,415)
by Tony Lorenzo from UK
| |
|
|
Just in case people don't know, and I havent seen it mentioned but may have missed it, there is a new book out called Why Mariah Carey Matters.
It is a scholarly, deeply intelligent deep dive into Mariah, her songs, her lyrics, producing and songwriting, her place in the musical pantheon, what she means to the lambs and the gay community as well as to tge music industry.
It is written with deep analysis and great thought. It is personal, and it's the first time anyone has got the essence of Mariah down to a tee. You will all have many flashes of recognition and feel like he is reading your mind.
It is a powerful book and you all need to read it if you are fans. It is probably the most important document on Mariah Carey there is beyond her own memoir. In some ways it is more enjoyable than her memoir because it is a serious analysis of her rather than descriptive history of events. Mstiah can't say the same things this man Andrew Chan can because she's too humble.
The best thing about the book is that it doesnt seek to sycophantically praise her as some sort of perfect deity who can do no wrong. He provides a fair assessment of her, soberly. Thankfully he hold her in such esteem that not much negative can be said, but you get the impression he's just speaking the truth with great honesty
Drop everything and read this book. It's not stupidly long but is in-depth.
And if anyone has any kind of access to Mariah or her team, you need to point them in this book's direction. Mariah deserves to read this stuff and know how important she is and how many people totally get her.
If you don't read this book you have missed out on some profound Mariah commentary. I would be doing Mariah a disservice by not encouraging people to read it.

Same. This one has a video though apparently but of course it is a recording session video. Like the last two videos Fall in Love at Christmas and The Roof with Brandy. (Those are her last 2 videos right? Though the Brandy recording session video made sense.) At this point I don't know if it's budget issues or lack of will and creativity. I'm still excited to hear the song. Sounds like it should've been on Caution.

Is MC's vocal technique still there? (106,410)
by Edward from USA
| |
|
|
Robert-Anthony, there's nothing wrong with having hope. I'm constantly hopeful that Mariah will regain her voice to a level where she can comfortably sing an entire song without relying on smoke and mirrors. I think being hopeful is always good, but being realistic is more important.
Changing the subject, It's been nearly six years since we last had a 10-track album from Mariah. She could've released a couple of well put together EP's. Forget about the charts, forget about record deals, give something to your hardcore fans.

Is MC's vocal technique still there? (106,407)
by Edward from USA

Mastering vocal technique without possessing a captivating voice is akin to honing skills in a field where natural aptitude is lacking. Technique alone falls short, if it were the sole determinant, Mariah would undoubtedly be crafting vocal masterpieces consistently, yet reality paints a different picture.
While we have discussed her voice ad nauseam at this point, let's not venture into Delulu Land. The fluidity, clarity, and effortless delivery that once defined her seem to have been long gone.
In hindsight, Mariah's involvement in the "Yes, And" remix missed the mark. Neither did she enhance the track nor did her signature whistle did the trick or sounded pleasant. Even though I'm not one of those "they wronged poor MC" fans, this seems to have been a set up. Ariana wanted her to be the loudest voice in the track, well, she was, but it didn't mean it was the best voice.
"Made for Me" peaked at #20, but now it's sitting at #54 on the Billboard Hot 100. While it still retains an ascending bullet, I don't see how Mariah involvement would make it gain momentum.
Mariah would be better served focusing on original music rather than lending her talents to forgettable collaborations.
Sorry about it.

MC’s acting career (106,408)
by Brandon from USA
| |
|
|
I wish MC would have used some of her down time these past few years to cultivate her acting career. Precious and Wise Girls really showed her acting range and I wished MC would have developed that more, especially since these past few years we haven't gotten any new music. She's only been popping up at Christmas time, then goes away. She could have really established herself in the movie world as a bonafide award winning actress IMO (Lady Gaga anyone). Who knows what's next for MC.

Is MC's vocal technique still there? (106,402)

I was listening to random tracks on four albums today. They were the Mariah Carey, Butterfly, TEOM, and Caution. I chose those four albums because you can tell MC's singing style and voice significantly changed on those four albums. After my listening sessions, I listened to the Made For Me remix snippet. I love her alto voice now. I have always favored altos over sopranos. MC's alto voice is just a sweet divine to my ears. I think she still has her vocal technique that she has always had. So my question to the board is this. Does MC still have her vocal technique? If she were to have a voices battle with Jessie J, would MC win the battle? Beyonce?
