Re: Glitter 20th anniversary (98,541) (98,544)

I believe that several big MC30 items, special projects and a Christmas project will be available in October in her store. MC gave us some special moments last year and she is going to do it again this year.

Ah yes, the Sweet A Capella of One Sweet Day is gorgeous, I completely forgot about that one. Definitely better than the original. Adds a whole new dimension. And yep, agree with the Bonita mix of DYKWYGT. I also love the Bossa Nova of Butterfly, because it's so unique in her remix catalogue (even though it's not technically a bossa nova lol, but close enough), but it's tough to beat the original.

Oh yes I always thought "Turn you loose" should be recorded by MC. I still love Glitter, great album, great soundtrack.

Glitter 20th anniversary (98,541)
by Anonymous from United States

I'm thinking back to how Mariah skipped the "Glitter" album during the MC30 roll out. I wonder if she's planning something for the 20th anniversary of the album release (9/11). It would be nice to have the "Loverboy" club remixes available for streaming. I know there were remixes for "Never too Far/Hero" Medley as well.
I'd personally love to hear a Mariah-only recording of that song "Turn You Loose", which is featured in the opening scene with Billie and her mother.

"Fly Away" (Butterfly Reprise) (Def B' Fly Club Mix), "Always Be My Baby" (Always Club Mix), "One Sweet Day" (Sweet A Capella), "My All/Stay Awhile" (So So Def Remix), and "Any Time You Need a Friend" (Boriqua Tribe Mix) & (Soul Convention Mix), and "Do You Know Where You're Going To" (Mariah Bonita Club) are just a few of my favorites.
I'm with you on Fantasy. Although I like the ODB version, I think I prefer the original mix. There were a few popular songs around that time that utilized the Tom Tom Club sample, but I think Mariah utilized it the best.
Unfortunately, remix quality (and general quality of output) went downhill after "Glitter". Happy that Mariah had the major comeback with "The Emancipation of Mimi", but I find that album to be overrated. The songs outside of the singles were hit-or-miss for me. "Me I Am Mariah" is my favorite post-Sony album of hers but still don't think it provided much of anything in the way of remixes.

Remixes that surpass the original (98,539)
by Bill from the UK
| |
|
|
I've been listening to my maxi singles lately and really do believe there have been moments in MC's career where a remix has far outdone the original album version.
The Jackswing mix of Someday is far more organic and sparse sounding than the overproduced album version in my opinion. I will also never tire of the Def Club Mix of Dreamlover, though I adore the original of course, the remix ushered in all those that would follow. I feel torn about the original Fantasy (pure ear candy) and the ODB remix. Both are Goliaths, but the original probably just edges it out in my view. Again, I love AYNAF but the C&C Club Mix has some of the best, most free sounding vocals Mariah has ever delivered. Her scatting at the end as her upper register swirls around in the background is phenomenal.
Another no brainer is the Pure Imagination remix of I Still Believe. The original is nice but Mariah turns it into a whole new song with only the title as it's similarity. The Willy Wonka sample is inspired.
Post-Sony not much to write home about remix wise as she rarely did anything she hadn't done better before. The only ones I like as the "No Rap" edits that remove JD's relentless bleating and interruptions. It's like just shut up. For a change.
Have I missed anything obvious?

That's so heartbreaking. I recall the "More Than a Woman" video dropped after her death and I liked it so much more than "Rock The Boat".

Absolutely; apparently Aaliyah really believed in Rock the Boat as a single and really pushed hard to get it released before MTAW because she thought it communicated more of the vibe of the red album, it was unique and it would be a great end of summer jam; where as MTAW was musically more similar to the first single We Need a Resolution. The label gave it to her because of how impressed they were with that final album, and trusted her judgement when it came to the single choices (something few have trusted Mariah with for some reason). Heartbreaking.

What makes it even worse is that they already shot a video for the song "More Than A Woman", which was good to go, and then for some reason they decided to film a video for "Rock The Boat" and put that out first, even though the "More Than A Woman" one was already finished and edited! And it was released after "Rock The Boat", so they did use it.

Love Aaliyah. She's going digital soon too after so long. Just been on holiday to Portugal and saw a guy wearing an Aaliyah t-shirt. I had to go over. I remember being in NYC on the day of her funeral and I saw the horse drawn carriage with her coffin.

I'm still not over her death. Such potential, she was just getting started. Smh. Worst still is there's actually video footage of her last day - the day of the plane crash on YouTube.

Did Mariah Carey and Dev Hynes [sample] Minnie Riperton on her song "Take a Little Trip" for "Giving me Life"? Sure sounds melodically very similar.

Christmas secrecy (98,530)

I don't like the fact MC is not giving up any details about all of her recording in the studio. I miss the posting of studio pictures. I would like to know who she is working with besides Daniel Moore III. Whenever she makes the album announcement, I am pretty sure it will not be on Epic Records and the news will be bigger than last year's Magical Christmas. If I am wrong, I will leave the board on December 31st.

20 years since BabyGirl passed. I can't even fathom the heights that beautiful soul would have reached. I've always believed MC wished she had the freedom to explore R&B the way Aaliyah did in the '90s. What albums do you think are Mariah's "most Aaliyah" albums? My vote is Butterfly and Caution. God bless Aaliyah.

This news came at such a funny time for me. But I'm actually really excited to try all of these flavors. I didn't buy her cookies, but I feel like sipping Black Irish and listening to her catalogue could be a whole mood. Like it just feels like it would be a celebration every time. Cheers lambs, I can't wait to stock up on this.

Honestly, I really don't care for Duets with Mariah and other artists period. I have found out that my best Mariah Carey songs are rarely the duets and more when she's alone on the track. Something about her sound, talent and gifting strikes me as larger than life and doesn't quite merge well with other artists, I guess this is what Chaka Khan meant when she said "artists are like planets and not everyone is compatible". Lol. A few times she's gotten it right - the duets that is with Luther Vandross, Whitney Houston, Boyz II Men and Miguel.

Collaborations (98,521)
by Anonymous from USA

I have always wondered what a Mariah/Janet Jackson or a Mariah/Toni Braxton song would sound like. There are so many talented R&B artists out there, I wish Mariah would collaborate with other great female voices. If done right, it could be a huge hit for all involved. I'm curious about the Justin Timberlake collaboration but at the same time I'm also glad it was never released, I don't care much for him. Do you guys think we'll ever get Mariah and Beyoncé on the same song? She's friendly with most of the women, but we don't get many collaborations, I don't think it's that simple either but c'mon, it's Mariah freaking Carey, people should be lining up to be on her records.

Re: Mariah sang on Eminem's "Superman" (98,519) (98,520)
by Anonymous from UK

That's not quite true either. Mariah and Eminem were friends, and hung out. In Blender, when promoting CB, she confirmed it by saying that she went to his house and, if my memory serves me, "jumped on his trampoline", or something equally unexpected. Something then happened for them to fall out - perhaps she did reject him further, it's the most likely considering his abuse, but no one really knows what went down between them, especially not as the story has changed since, and both Mariah and him clearly embellished facts to fit lyrics in their respective songs about each other (for example, the lyrics of "Clown" suggest they did talk and spend time together, while "Obsessed" implies it's silly to think they even met or shared activities, Eminem's lyrics are obv continuously fictional so don't need to be covered/trusted). But what is definitely known is that they did hang out on a friendship level, and Mariah did record Superman. Dina Rae has no reason to lie about that.
