Mariah Carey - socially tone deaf? Nothing new (112,242)
by Geronimo from USA
| |
|
|
Mariah Carey has always been socially tone deaf and her Sephora ad shows that age has probably given her an excuse to stop trying to hide it.
She's in New York glam girl and in the Israeli apartheid age, has seriously dated a Zionist with connections to one of the most vile human rights violators of the current era.
I know she sees herself as part of how people escape the "bleak" reality around them. She is also part of the problem as no one has the moral right to escape and encourage others to do so when the very act of always escaping is at least 75% of we (U.S. Americans) got here.

It's time video (112,240)
by Lambi from USA

I get where you're coming from, the Amazon and Sephora tie-ins can make it feel hugely commercialized. But working with Amazon doesn't equal supporting Bezos or his politics either. He hasn't been running the company, he's already stepped down as CEO and a lot of artists use it simply because it is today's biggest open market and Mariah seems to just be competing strategically.
I also think there's a bit of a mix-up here. When Mariah performed in the Amazon, her message was about protecting the rainforest raising awareness for deforestation, Indigenous rights, and the need to preserve it. The Amazon company is a totally separate issue. People are pressing them because of their big carbon footprint from shipping and data centers, but that's not directly connected to the rainforest itself.
The overlap is mostly because they share the same name. So while I get why it feels hypocritical at first, the two "Amazons" actually represent very different environmental conversations.
Fair point though, to feel uneasy about mega corporate tie-ins, but in today's industry, brand partnerships are how artists fund ambitious projects and global outreach.
But I still wouldn't categorize Mariah as tone-deaf or hypocritical. If anything, she avoids politics like the plague. She's also not out there like a lot of celebrities, tweeting about environmental causes every day, only to be exposed as virtue-signaling fools when people realize how much they travel in private jets.
Mariah is literally just being festive once a year, solidifying her legacy and collecting her coins.

Is it just me or does the new it's time video feel very tone deaf? It's not special anymore. It's literally a commercial for Sephora, partnering up with Amazon for merch and special album covers. Jeff Bezos is literally destroying the planet, he is also a huge supporter/fan the president. It's beginning to feel like she just cares about money at this point, also she just performed in the Amazon to bring awareness, yet she teams a person who's destroying it? Like? Anyone else feel this way?

That Elf's beef wasn't with Mariah it was with Santa. And he broke into Mariah's room and stole her stuff to sell to make some money. The Elf is in the wrong not Mariah who stopped him in his tracks. Mariah saved Christmas after the Elf strike, she delivered the products herself.

Christmas (112,229)
by Dove from United States

Times are bleak, but the holidays make life feel a little better. Personally, it seems like my whole life, someone has always been trying to ruin Christmas. I won't allow it. I'm sure they've had this partnership with Sephora for a while - probably since last year. Also, not everyone keeps up with current events.
I didn't even start watching the news until recently. It's bleak, and all the outlets are owned by the same people, so it's hard to know who to trust. Of course I vote, but I just read the booklet they send in the mail to decide who to vote for. I don't really trust mainstream media. A lot of people are like this. We focus more on doing our best at work and with our families than on draining our life force watching propaganda news channels.
Sephora paid for a nice little commercial for us. It was cute. People who shop there are still going to shop there. Whatever anyone does, there's always going to be something negative that can be said about it. Just let the woman live. She's been through enough. She's trying to give us a festive moment, and the bleakness happening right now is not her fault.
Her job is to give us a little escape from the bleakness - and she does that. The "Christmas is canceled" line, I took as a joke from her book, when her husband said Thanksgiving was canceled. It was a cute little skit, and people are making it out to be something it's not because they want someone to blame. But she's not the one.

Article: Mariah Carey's new ad isn't spreading Christmas cheer (112,236)
by Anonymous from USA
| |
|
|
Mariah can do whatever she wants but sadly many Americans have lost their jobs and now won't have the same Christmas they're used to. The rich are getting richer and the poor are getting poorer while the middle class is disappearing fast. There's no excuse for not getting educated on politics. People only care when it starts affecting them.

Exactly. There's not reason to politicize everything. Politics has already ruined many communities and good causes. The current situation is already hard as it is. Entertainment should be just that. People are getting too effing sensitive.

I think we all want joy and holiday cheer in our lives right now. The world is kind of bleak right now. I think MC made all of us feel like the Christmas season is upon us on November 1st. I am just hoping she will release the deluxe version of Merry Christmas II You with all of the remixes, duets, and live performances on CD and vinyl along with the ABC Christmas TV special this year.

There's a magic to the debut that was never recaptured (if I could recapture). Everyone always bleats on about working with Walter again, but I've always wanted her to collaborate with Ben Margulies again instead. Every Walter song had a similar style and structure. Same for the JD productions, and the C&C collabs. Every Carey/Margulies composition was unique and different to the one before it. The songs had a charm and innocence to them, genuine melodies and interesting arrangements. She's never had that with anyone since and it is, along with the exceptional voice, what makes the debut such a standout and my favourite.

It's definitely a lot of belting, very Emotions-coded, she was not holding back. That key E♭ major is no joke either, she really made the engineer earn his check that night.
I Wish You Knew and Mine Again are in the same key too, she loved that bright soulful E♭ vibe during the Mimi era. Yours and My Saving Grace from Charm share the same key as well, it's really Mariah's comfort and danger zone at the same time.
Her belting register is seriously a cut above the rest though. She makes the highest, brightest notes so pleasant to the ears. No one to this day can replicate the tonal quality and the mind-blowing resonance of her belts. My faves are the climaxes on Butterfly, and all the live belts she threw down on the Daydream tour, specifically that Hero performance in Rotterdam.

Christmas merch (112,222)
by Dove from United States
| |
|
|
I love being festive and decorating for the holidays every year, not unlike Mariah Carey. I mostly use the same decorations each season, but I always add a few new pieces to the collection. For me, Mariah Carey is just as important to Christmas as Santa Claus.
Some Mariah themed items I'd love to have: a life-sized cardboard cutout of her in the classic Santa jumpsuit, a beautiful snow globe (better quality ones than the two we got last year), and a Mariah Carey Barbie dressed as the angel from this year's It's Time video. (Honestly, we need more Mariah Carey Barbies in general.) I'd also love a silver music box that plays "All I Want for Christmas Is You", "Christmas Time Is in the Air Again", "Sugar Plum Fairy Introlude".
I liked the idea of an inflatable, but I'd actually prefer a blow mold with nine reindeer and Rudolph in front, something like the vintage Union ones. I think that would last longer. Or maybe a 6-foot blow mold to place between two 6-foot nutcrackers instead of the cutout - just make sure her face looks pretty.
I liked the makeup collection she had with MAC a while back. The colors were really pretty.
Lastly, I'd love an art print inspired by a scene from the All I Want for Christmas Is You video with Justin Bieber, without him in it. Mariah looked so beautiful in that video.
Oh and a MC Elf on a Shelf. But actually, a Mariah Carey Barbie could work as this instead. Even a smaller blow mold as her cartoon version would be cute.
It would be cute if she let Disney make an animated princess type movie with her likeness and songs. They make the best animated movies. You could sell a lot of movie related merch if it's popular. The movie could be about a little girl from Long Island who believed in herself and in her dreams and became the queen of Christmas.

Easy "Mariah Carey", "Butterfly" and "The Emancipation Of Mimi". These three album are the main anchors in her discography, each detailing very important eras in her journey - Her introduction, growth and freedom, then legend status when she finally gained the respect from the industry. A worthy mention is "Daydream" which is so very important in her journey too, I didn't pick it as it is actually the true beginning of her growth as an artist that culminates with "Butterfly" so these two albums are intertwined to me although very different and honestly her true core and identity as an artist.

There are two solo versions on YouTube. The one from 3 months ago is fan-made. The other from 1 month ago is the real solo version (after the release of the album). Coincidentally, I got my physical copy today as well from Amazon Spain and I was surprised when I listened to the solo version as the album track.
PD: In fact, I got it way back in early September (pre-order), but it arrived at a relative's house and I wasn't able to open it and enjoyed it until today.
