Easy on me (98,744)
by Joachim Agerup Løkkevik from Norway
| |
|
|
My all time favourite artist of all time is, obviously, Mariah, but I love Celine, Whitney, Anita Baker, Nina Simone, Chaka Kahn, all the "big voiced"-ladies. The only one who can be compared to these ladies the last decade, looking at you Ariana, is Adele. She doesen't have the register, but her voice is sublime and so soulful. I was really looking forward to "Easy on me".
"Easy on me" has, at least what I have read, got universal acclaim from music critics. And I have to admit, it is a solid song, quality, easy to listen to, true Adele, not at all what music sounds like generally today. But let us be real, I can't say if this was released from her debut album, 19, her sophomore album, 21, her third album, 25, or her latest album, 30. "Easy on me" is like all Adele songs blended together.
In reviews of Mariah's "Don't Forget About Us", critics talked about Mariah hitting a creative wall, the song was too similar to WBT, too similar to everything she has done. I just can't understand why most critics are not making the same point about Adele's latest effort. Adele has clearly hit a creative wall, the song is boring, nothing new, no excitement, no bravoure, it's just Adele. I'm really disappointed. I have listened to "Easy on me" two times, and I think it will be the only two times I will ever listen to the song.
I wonder, why are music critics, and the general public alike, so crazy about this song? Is it because music these days is just manufactured mainstream bubble gum pop/rnb from Ariana, Justin Bieber and Taylor Swift, that an old school jam from Adele is all the world needs to just praise her as a genius?
How come a generic piano ballade, quintessential Adele song, with nothing new to offer, get so much praise?

Guys, let's not be crazy. What other artist could be as successful as Mariah? She has a Christmas number one? Yes but she also has another 18 non Christmas mega hits and so many other hit songs. At this point it is just crazy to say she is only noticed on Christmas.

For some reason it does not bother me. She has achieved more than many people can claim, regardless of field of work. Adding a Christmas act is another big achievement. She broke into the industry when Adele was barely 2 years old. Let's give her a break.

Same formula but she was missed so people are anticipating this release. Not as catchy as Hello or Rolling In The Deep.

Mariah a Christmas act (98,739)
by T from USA

Is anyone else slightly concerned that the younger generation of music consumers are only going to perceive Mariah to be a Christmas act? I can imagine the marketing behind this special will be as big as last years, and since 2019 it seems that she's really only visible music wise at Christmas time. An album like Caution didn't even get the attention it so deserved, maybe people really only check for her after Thanksgiving.

This was one "The Voice" got right, and the show seemed to get a lot of credibility as she was seemingly taking off and then not. I only heard of her when she had passed, it's so sad. This girl could've been a massive big star by now. I come back to her audition ever so often.

Oh yes, I still have videos from the VH1 specials too. They were all great, you're right there must have worked a lamb at that time. It was really a cool time and you could only love Mariah and her music. So fresh, so sweet, so adoreable, I will never forget that time. I esteem those memories.

That [era] is when I became a die hard lamb. Haha. I had a "When You Believe" cassette tape and used to record music videos on VHS and anytime Mariah came on even if the song was almost through I'd hit record without fail. Oh and how VH1 loved Mariah Carey, I bet there was a lamb working there at the time. Where did time go?

And it's crazy how every producer she collaborates with manages to capture that signature sound. I hope she recorded some more songs with Trackmasters. They had that hard hip hop sound that was pleasing to the ears. I guess that's why MC liked them so much. The Rarities 2 should be interesting and put a smile on our faces.

"Crazy how Mariah's sound is instantly recognizable even when she isn't singing." Yes Terna, it's so true. That's her unique MC style that I love so much from day one. Songs from the vault 97-98 are really needed. There must be hidden gems from that era.

This is so random, for you to mention them out of the blue as I have been playing and singing "Last Chance" the greater part of this month randomly, that song is written and sung beautifully. I once played it for a die hard Céline Dion fan friend of mine and he went "It sounds so Mariah, It's near perfect." Lol. Crazy how Mariah's sound is instantly recognizable even when she isn't singing, her sense of melodies and what works musically is 2nd to none. If there's a version of hers in the vault I hope she releases it together with other songs recorded during that time period - '97/98 that era wasn't represented on the first rarities.

Late to the debate but Emotions album is one my favourites, always has been. I personally feel it sounds more soulful and deep. The ballads are more meaningful and powerful. Love love love "Till the end of time" and "So blessed". Even the cover I find more classic and oozes quality. I would love to have seen an album showcase in a small venue like "the Tatoo Club" of just songs from Emotions and her wearing that white dress.

I really hope Mariah's demo of the songs she wrote for others are still available in the vault. The following are the songs she wrote for others that I would love to hear: 1. Allure - Last Chance 2. Blaque - Don't Go Looking For Love 3. Faith - Where Are You Christmas

I bet MC recorded a demo for Head Over Heels. The background vocals/layering that goes on in that song is so Mariah. Also the ad-libs as well. Would love to see that on Rarities 2 as I always imagined her singing it. That and, of course, Where Are You Christmas.

I really like this group. I have bought an "ear book" about New York, it has CD's with typical music from the city like Jazz, Swing, RnB, Hip-Hop with three songs from Allure. Very cool. I always hear Mariah when I listen to Allure. I wonder if MC has a song from Allure completely sung by herself. We just need a Rarities part two.

I was thinking the same. Her songwriting is one reason I became a fan beside her outstanding voice, aura. I love her early lyrics so much and of course the "Butterfly lyrics". I miss those kind of lyrics, that were really poetic. We all know her voice changed, but why those beautiful lyrics? What she created with Walter was magic. I wish she would find another "Walter" a great musician who would inspire her. Than she could do a jazz album or soul-pop album with great lyrics. One can dream.

Mimi's songwriting has not been the same since she stopped writing with Walter A. We probably will never get another Daydream or Butterfly album. Her songwriting was impeccable back then. She probably will never admit that Walter A. inspired her when he sat at that piano. Just my thoughts after listening to Infinity. Maybe I am wrong. MC16 might take us back.

Exactly. Navigating the junior high to high school years is hard enough without adding the craziness with social media. My daughter just turned 13. My hubby and I got her a phone, her first one. No social media. She can try Instagram once she hits high school then Facebook once she's an adult and decide for herself.

Adele is going to own November 19. It is the Friday before Black Friday. I am thinking MC's announcement is going to be the week before Halloween. I suspect we have not received an announcement before now because she was waiting on Adele's announcement.
