Music Box vs Daydream (108,933) by Edward from USA Lyrically, I prefer Daydream, but vocally, Music Box reigns supreme in my book. While her voice on Daydream was like pure butter, smooth, nuanced, and mature, on Music Box, it was fuller, more powerful and with a richness difficult to match. Mariah Carey, Music Box, and Merry Christmas are the only albums where Mariah came closest to matching Whitney’s level of resonance and vocal power. Daydream still featured incredible vocals, strong, expressive, and technically refined, but it leaned more into buttery tone and artistic subtlety rather than sheer vocal force. As an overall body of work, Daydream was more mature and creatively sophisticated than Music Box, but vocally, Music Box was a powerhouse. The simplest explanation is the best explanation (108,932) by Lambi from USA I actually believe the human singing voice is perfected through Mariah. She can quite literally do everything and more. God was like: "She's just gonna sound out of this world, in every register, and her songwriting will blow everyone out of the water, oh and I'll put her in charge of my holiday." Her voice is a literal gift from the heavens above but it also came with a bit of a curse. Mariah has nodules. Her ability to whistle eventually worsened her nodules. Her voice was the money maker, because she was poor and is deeply afraid of the rug being pulled from under her. She worked her voice to the extremes. Songwriting also happen to make bank in royalties so she went crazy hard on that too. She simply overworked her gifts. End end. These nose jobs and alcoholism theories sound so elementary. Mimi anniversary (108,929) by Mara from United States I like the release, some remixes more than others but the one thing I have to say I was disappointed by was that she omitted: "With You I'm Born Again". That performance sent chills down my spine and I remember how electrifying her entrance was to It's Like That and the dress and everything. The audience was so into her. Then her entrance on stage into With You I'm Born Again was so beautiful, the high note haunting. I wish it were properly added to listen without pulling up YouTube. Facts don't care about your feelings, they remain facts, whether you like them or not. And clearly, for some of you, the truth is like kryptonite. It's well documented that Mariah Carey indulged in heavy drinking, especially around the time leading up to the release of Butterfly. Her voice was never quite the same afterward. She's been drunk in public many times, so it's not like she had a secret. While it may not have been his place to speak on it, even her brother mentioned that she was drinking while on her bipolar meds. Eminem, in his track The Warning, didn't hold back either, outright calling her an alcoholic. Say what you want, but the receipts have been there for a long time. And as much as I love Mariah, with the state of her voice today, she wouldn't even make it to audition in front of the judges on American Idol. Her voice is completely shot. Happy anniversary (108,924) by Randy from USA You know that's an interesting premise. And I'm ready to get off this stroke, medication, vocal nonsense. I feel like Music Box and Daydream are siblings with the same highs and lows. Each has monster hits (Dreamlover, Hero, Without You vs. Fantasy, One Sweet Day, Always Be My Baby). Each has a weakness (I've Been Thinking About You vs Long Ago). Each has a club song (Now That I Know vs. Daydream Interlude). Dave Jam Hall, Babyface and Walter make appearances on both. I think the reason Music Box is slightly weaker is Now That I Know sucks as much as I've Been Thinking About You so it has two weak tracks and Daydream has Looking In. There's no introspective, non-romantic love track on Music Box. Looking In is the precursor to Close My Eyes, Outside, Petals, Languishing and of course, the best Mariah Carey song of all time Right To Dream. So yea, to me Daydream is the better of the two but Music Box is no slouch. I still play tf out of Anytime You Need A Friend from Tokyo Dome and the Jermaine Dupri remix of Never Forget You. It was most evident during the Nightmare era. I don't think there's a picture available from that time of her not holding a glass of champagne. As I've said previously I do wish she would come clean about what she is battling. Be it alcoholism, drug dependency, a debilitating disease etc. She is clearly not right. I hate that the Yass Queens just brush it all aside. I've loved Mariah since the moment I saw her. I sometimes think I'm the only person that cares about her in this way. What I hear on "Daydream" is a voice beginning to falter and the singer pushing harder, trying to accommodate (this is even more obvious by the time she's on the Daydream tour in 1996). Her singing is not full, and intentional anymore but calculative and heldback. Normally, a singer would step back cancel shows to rest but we all know that wasn't the case for her, that era was the most busy for her and heavily tasking on her voice.
