Mariah Carey had 50-11 nose jobs but still insecure about "bad side"? (108,908) by Bill from the UK
An objective look at Mariah's behaviour leads me to think that yes, alcoholism has been massively responsible for the person we see before us today.

Let's unpack it all:
1. From Butterfly references to alcohol and drinking became more prominent in her lyrics.
2. Alcohol is known as one of the absolute worst things for a singing voice. Mariah's voice being damaged beyond repair (to the point that a number of us unprofessionals on this board can probably sing Hero better than she can and with no lipping) suggests she has indulged too much in this vice.
3. Alcoholism can be inherited and she has stated that her mother suffered from this disease.
4. She has been taking medication for her bipolar since Glitter. Also since then, we have seen her on many, many occasions drinking flamboyantly and recreationally, which you should not do when taking medication. This may cause her somewhat disassociated persona of recent years.
5. She cannot walk on stage without assistance.
6. Her speech can be slurred, rambling, and nonsensical at times.
7. It was most evident during the Nightmare era. I don't think there's a picture available from that time of her not holding a glass of champagne.

As I've said previously I do wish she would come clean about what she is battling. Be it alcoholism, drug dependency, a debilitating disease etc. She is clearly not right. I hate that the Yass Queens just brush it all aside. I've loved Mariah since the moment I saw her. I sometimes think I'm the only person that cares about her in this way.

I don't care about number ones, sales, her being the "queen of shade", or her damn lighting. All I care about is her and her being healthy, and happy. And she is not.

Is there any other singer? (108,906) by Tevin from USA
I was wondering, other than normal age, wear and tear on a voice. Do you all know of any other singer, who's voice pretty much changed with each album, like Mariah's did? Not including child singers like MJ when he first started, since their voices change with age.

I thought the changes that took place during Daydream era, was more of a stylistic choice rather than any vocal changes or issues. Plus didn't she start lowering the keys of most of her songs that era, in order to be able to hit crazier and more dramatic high notes?

Mariah Carey had 50-11 nose jobs but still insecure about "bad side"? (108,904) by Chicago Lamb from USA
I love your post. Any alleged nose-jobs would not have affected her singing ability. However, the tone would have changed as evidenced on Daydream and after Glitter. As brilliant Mariah was a technician with her voice, I don't think she put in the hard work (actual practice) that could have kept it up over a 35+ year career. Her tone was slightly different from album to album anyway. But who knows, there are undoubtedly medical issues we are unaware of, doctors advising her what to do etc. #MCForever

Do you think alcoholism is one of Mariah's issues? I know she likes a drink but never looked at it this way before. It would make sense that this is her vice and what's damaged her vocals. When I think of younger Mariah, she was so much more happier, even though she says she wasn't. You can see it on her face and hear it in both her speaking and singing voice. I just listened to Daydream from Tokyo Dome, I love when she says "thank you guys" to the fabulous four and saying "they are having church up in here" at the end of Hero. She sounds so humble and sweet, and just generally happier, a complete contrast to her personality now. I think Mariah wanted to change herself because she didn't want to be this sweet and grounded person she wanted to be more edgy, which I get, hey we would all like to be different at times but I honestly believe that's who she really is deep down and wanting to change has only led to more problems for her down the line. It's like Tommy said no one was forcing her to write those songs or be the person she was. I believe when you loose sight of who you really are and portray a different image it can only do harm to yourself. Mariah can live her life however she chooses it's not down to anyone else, that is just my gut feeling about her.

Say Somethin Solange remix (108,902) by Bobby A from United States
Terna, your MC and Solange collaboration has come to fruition. Shezz, you made of aware first about Nostradamus' X post last year. The remix hits at a different level for MC. It is so Solange. It was released last night at midnight for the TEOM 20th anniversary. Can you imagine how MC and Solange would sound together on a new song with Solange's production style?

Wait what? Daydream era actually sounded so agile. Vision Of Love in Madison Square 95 Garden for reference. Daydream I'd say, was Mariah's most ethereal. Perfect balance of full voice and head voice while also being easily palatable. She mastered singing "straight" but also placed her runs just right (ultimate reference: Open Arms). Butterfly's songs were overdone with runs (first time she was allowed to do so) with the exception of My All and Close My Eyes. Tommy was actually right with making her sing straight. The more plain language, the more the masses eat it up. Something magical also happened with Mariah's tone during Daydream. I used to never put her above Whitney but when Daydream was released, it was clear who had the better voice. Her high belts in Fantasy, One Sweet Day and Always Be My Baby just cannot be duplicated. No one to this day can match the brightness of her resonance. It sounded so beautiful. Perfect mix of Music Box and Butterfly. The full potential of Mariah's voice was realized during Daydream. It was her response to Whitney's Bodyguard success so she also had to step up her songwriting. Underneath The Stars still stands as one of her best works.

I'm surprised more people don't notice the difference from Merry Christmas to Daydream vocally. Most sight Butterfly as when he voice began to decline and change, but for me Daydream was the beginning of the end. It was just masked by good songs, good production, and confidence on the stage when performing. Main call-outs for you all to review is that her melisma became disjointed, most noticeable on songs like I Am Free. She breaks it up rather than just singing straight through the melody like she did on all her albums beforehand. Then all the body from her voice went too, best displayed by When I Saw You and Long Ago. She still sounds great but there was a very noticeable shift at this point. As this was before her alcoholism then the nose job would be the most likely cause for the change.

How could it be? MC's voice in 1995 was clear and strong. The Fantasy intro whistle is her best whistle note ever. Melt Away is pure bliss to one's ear. I just wonder now does MC has any regrets about any cosmetic surgery that she had done. I feel we will see a more open and forthcoming MC this Christmas season about a lot of things she been through since Caution's release. Some network is going to offer her a huge figure for a sitdown tell all interview this Christmas season.

Cheese fries. How American. Eat carrots and you will reverse the age, darling. I was until this day sure that she had at least one boob job (both left (Dolly) and right (Parton) of course). But nothing dramatic like Pamela in the 90s. Anyway, I don't need new music, but would love some old stuff. Grunge or not.

Mariah has a scar on her left eyelid (thus why she covers it with bangs) and an uneven tooth on her left side as well. But now that she has veneers it's flawless. I love seeing her just being able to rock a full updo in concerts. She actually genuinely looks amazing. I stumbled across her beautician's instagram and the beauty routine she had for MC was insane.

Yes I remember reading somewhere years ago that Tommy bought her first boob job for her. How true that is I'm not sure. Sometimes I feel Mariah chose to sing differently from Daydream and that also affected the quality of her voice. But I defo agree the nose surgery didn't help.

Mariah came to terms with her (non-existent) bad side years ago and has said as such in her interview. It is pretty clear and obvious she has had a small nose job, and a large breast job, since 1990. The nose job is incredibly subtle but clearly impacted her voice and happened during 1995. It is obvious as it was the first major change in her voice, that became more nasally and brassy on Daydream, and lost its body. That I chalk up to the nose job. The most noticeable breast augmentation was in 1999 when Rainbow launched, but there was talk of a smaller one in 1994, but not so sure about that.

Mariah's been known to say that maybe some people aren't meant to be happy (108,892) by Baby from Dreamville...Where There's No Beginning & There is No End
That sentiment has hung over her head like a dark cloud since forever. We've yet to hear her proclaim victory over it. Why she hangs on to that particular self-fulfilling prophesy is sad. Because ultimately it means that whenever she's happy and away from dysfunction, she'll subconsciously seek to undo that happiness. That's why IMHO some of her choices confuse people. Even though dysfunction hurts her, that's what's familiar.

Mariah is a study in dichotomy because even as her brand rests firmly in positivity, faith, overcoming obstacles and dreaming big, she sets limitations on herself still that go against that. I'm not talking about her artistry (but I could make that car in another post). But her personal life and art are intrinsically tied because she's the writer, composer and conductor of her music that we know in large parts are autobiographical. I genuinely hope Mariah isn't out here "suffering" just to have material for her albums.

Stop chasing unhappiness MC - reciprocate love, trust and respect, don't reject it under some dysfunctional idea formed when you were emotionally immature just trying to survive.

Forgive me if I am going overboard as obviously I am not living Mariah's life. I couldn't possibly understand all of her motivations for how she chooses to live. But as a keen observer and lifetime fan/defender, I sense that I am not completely off track. I say all of this with the deepest Love, respect and hope.

I love this theory so much and always have. Usually I'll scroll whatever site I am on and keep laughing. Today I have time: Mariah's left side is like the other side of the moon, only God and satellites have ever really had a full clear view. But we're supposed to believe she's gone under anesthesia several times and just left her "bad side" alone? Maybe the locals will humor you but a lamb will laugh behind your back.

I agree. I think Mariah had a subtle nose job around the Daydream era, after that, it’s hard to tell because she contours her nose a lot. Aside from several minor touch-ups here an there, a great dose a Botox, some cheek fillers, the occasional honey facial, and her freezer chamber routine, I doubt she's had anything major done.

I remember when people swore she’d had multiple boob jobs, only for it to turn out she was just rocking some serious push-up bras. My sister swears by those too, she buys them every ten years, but her husband says they feel hard as rocks, I don't know what that means. Anyway, I’m getting cheese fries.

Recording contract (108,889) by Bobby A from United States
Is it possible that MC doesn't have a recording contract? It could explain why MC16 has not come to fruition. Record labels loan artists money to record an album and deliver it in a certain timeframe to the label for approval, mastering, and packaging. Surely, if she had a recording contract, MC16 would have been released by now. MC16 has been nothing but "talk" for the last 4 years. Janet Jackson is in the same situation. That is the reason why Janet keeps going on tour so much. She doesn't have a recording contract either. It was never like this in the 70s and 80s for artists when they reached the ages of MC and Janet. Will it happen to Taylor Swift in 15 years?

Eternal 12 (108,888) by Jamie from UK
She's definitely had a few nose jobs which has altered her face from what it was, I preferred it before. It wasn't even big before now it's too small. I've had a couple of nose jobs so I'm not against surgery but a tweak that she had during Daydream was all that was needed for Mariah, now it's far too small.

If you search Mariah nose before and after you can see the huge changes over the years. The tip had got progressively smaller. I was always under the impression as a singer you should never have a nose job, but a lot do. Could this be why her voice changed during Daydream the same time her nose did. I think she kept that first nose job until Glitter then from there you can notice even more changes.

Botox can render your face expressionless too. Unless you want to Cher your face up, there are new cosmetic procedures that take years of your face while still looking natural. I think Mariah's had minor procedures through the years, but nothing so dramatic though.

I don't have any evidence on the case, but hasn't some fans here written about her lack of facial expressions and it (surgery) might a reason for it? I don't know. There has been times during her career that I have watched her on tv shows, and I have been thinking that her face looks different since last time I watched her perform. She's 56 this year, has tons of money and work in an industry where it's sadly "normal" to fix things.

Btw: 1 day, 14 hours and 39 minutes left before she release TEOM20.
