I absolutely love accents. I was in line at Disney when a woman with her daughter got behind me. They were from Sydney, Australia. (I named my daughter Sydney.) We chatted and I told her she had a lovely accent. I am from Southern California. The only accent I have is how So Cal peeps tend to put "the" in front of a freeway. (Ex: You take "the" 15 to "the" 210, etc.). That's not even an accent, lol. Oh well, at least we have beaches.

Can we just stick to the facts and not make this about some race war please. If you're talking music styles then yes I love urban/R&B Mariah but I wasn't talking about that. You've taken what we have been saying into your own context and twisted it into black vs white. Again shame on you. I think you've just crowned yourself the "poison" on this forum. We all love Mariah in our own way, respect people's opinions and stop being rude to people.

You get it, and I'm glad you addressed it from this angle, I just didn't want to get into it. Part of the main problem "OG's" have is Mariah's leaning towards black music and succeeding at it too - R&B/Hiphop specifically. That's why they will always have a problem with this "New Mariah", so to speak, because that Tommy version was molded to cater to a white audience. Let's call it as it is. However, that's not the real her, never really was to begin with - check "Vision of Love", that's a singer who's main and only influence is black music, gospel, R&B and hip-hop (check the debut album, isn't she rapping on "Prisoner"). What's mind boggling about these OG fans is that new Mariah (true Mariah) has now been out so to speak, much longer (all caps) than hairbangs Mariah (Music Box and Daydream) and she has pretty much remained the same since, yet they're still hooked on the curated Tommy's vision of her and think that somehow, someday she's gonna go back to pop and that image. Smh.

100% agreed
I've been dreaming of her wearing a suit like this for a while now. The Ellen suit was cute but much too tight for her. This is giving style, lux, fashion, tailoring, icon, relevance, Bish I'm still here. It exceeded expectations.
I saw a photoshoot with Julia Roberts a few years ago in a big suit like that (she wore them a lot in the 90s, too) and it looked amazing. I started praying Mimi would allow someone to style her like that. Color me pleasantly shocked.

The evolution of Mariah Carey (110,131)

Every time someone on here proclaims themselves an OG, I have to take a deep breath and proceed with caution.
Mariah has stated multiple times how controlled and unhappy she was in the first several years of her career. She threw herself into her work and convinced herself this was the price she had to pay for success. Other friends like Brat even wondered "How do you live like this?" It's a little weird to see all the OG's being nostalgic for this era.
The OG's say she was a proper lady in this era - classy, dignified, pristine, graceful, and her true authentic self. They mourn her current state, which one is left to assume is the opposite of all those adjectives. I'm not here to invalidate anyone's opinion, but I can provide another perspective that Terna expressed - we both happen to be black.
In our culture Mariah is viewed as bougie and fancy. Initially we were like "Who is this white girl singing down like that? Okay Mariah, Get down with your bad self. Do your thing, girl." I don't think one culture's perspective is more important than another's, but I think we should remember to try and view the whole.
I do think Mariah would be disheartened that who she is now is causing so much sadness and heartache to the OG's. But I don't think she would go back (and no shade, but I heard the Walter song and I agree with her). I think she would sadly hand y'all the Art of Letting Go record. Go to Mimi on your contacts. Press delete. End your suffering.
If it's any consolation, the OG's can always treasure the memory of Tommy controlled Mariah, when she was being her true authentic self.

Did she always had the New York accent or did she switch sometimes? It's an interesting observation. I have to watch the interviews, but I fear only a native speaker will notice. Does the New York accent sound strong for Americans from other states? I just remember an old interview with Rosie where they were talking about beeing both Long Island girls.

Great interview. Shout out to the Butterfly era. Her New York accent was really strong during the interview. Maybe I notice New York accents so much because my former co-worker Lorraine in the early 90s was from New York and she found herself transplanted in the heart of the south in Memphis, Tennessee. I adored her New York accent. Of course MC's New York accent isn't as thick as Lorraine's New York accent.

That wasn't a curse word - I don't have to curse to get my point across, that's Eric and his weird ever changing rules here. Oh well, I stand by everything I said originally. I love Mariah and all her versions, flaws and all, unapologetically too. We all have changed too, she's just the only one who's gotten her evolution, captured over a timeline and well documented being a superstar in the spotlight.

Aww this is a message board where people can voice their opinions. There was no negativity from any of my posts, we're not complaining as we are still supporting her by buying her music, as I said I like both TD and SS. I simply stating she is changed and how I personally would have liked her career to play out for the better, it doesn't mean I won't support her whatever she does or call her out for something I don't like. That is a true fan to me... being honest. You're the one calling people "silly fans" and "poison" and having a word censored. That isn't a nice trait. You're the one that should be ashamed of yourself, not us.

I hope radio and people in general give "Sugar Sweet" a real chance, it is such a bop. She actually crafted a catchy hook that sticks in your head. I love the flavor Shenseea brings to the song, she reminds a little of Nicki Minaj. "SS" is definitely an earworm. I don't remember the last time Mariah released a song that got me humming the chorus spontaneously. It's definitely an earworm. If it doesn't become a hit, I don't know what will.

Some OG's are actually cool. Sometimes you can just tell they've been around. They're quite knowledgeable and genuinely have such a deep understanding of Mariah. I actually respect their assessments.
But there's one here that just kind of says, "I'm such an OG", "we OG fans", and it's peak cringe. Reminds me of that one kid in school who still tries too hard to be cool. It's like a badge of honor they wear that nobody cares about.

I agree absolutely with you, Eric. I think last Thursday on Jimmy Kimmel was just a poor wardrobe choice. MC looks stunning in the photograph. I am getting from this photo a new Mariah Carey is about to emerge with Here For It All. 60 days until the new Mariah Carey is revealed to the world. I feel MC is going to be on TV and magazine covers a lot starting September 14th for the HFIA promotional blitz.

Sugar Sweet (110,149)
by Baby from Dreamville...Where There's No Beginning & There is No End
| |
|
|
You may very well be right Andrew, meaning the ring reference is just a metaphor. Getting a ring pop from Nick never did anything for any of the many women he proposed to - least of all Mariah.
He's been adamant he's never gonna marry again because there is too much to lose for him and everything to gain for Mariah. He'd have to stop talking about her for one and that's not happening anytime soon. Mariah's had opportunity to distance herself from him by marrying someone else. Now that she's single, suddenly she's talking about absolutely getting the ring? Those handmaid's Nick keeps are as happy as pigs in shit because of the biological connection to Mariah's kids. I don't think they care anything about a ring if it means Nick gets less attention and opportunities. They live vicariously through him.
To me the lyric comes across as if she sees the "ring" as the prize and not just a trinket or the actual symbol of love and commitment to marriage. It wouldn't have given me pause if she'd said: "Cause I will absolutely get the bling." Part of the reason I'm a fan of Mariah the songwriter is because that's how I've gotten to know glimpses of the person I assume she is in real life at various points. Her writing is always the best when it's personal, when she writes what she knows. Most great writers use their own lives as canvas. So when I can't connect the dots I feel apart from her and I don't enjoy the experience as much.
There are plenty of lyricists who just throw words together and make great songs because of a cute rhyme scheme. But they're not my favorite artists. I don't buy the artist's albums even when I like individual songs. I don't know them - for lack of a better term.
Don't get it twisted, I'm still bumping Sugar Sweet on repeat. I hope she has a solo version with one more verse. In the Type Dangerous' video she's telling on of the castoffs: "No darling" with a huge rock on her middle finger. And in the lyrics she's saying, "They wanna settle down but I just don't trust them. They wanna lock me down but there's no handcuffing." And here she is talking about wanting the ring, expecting it because she deserves it?
Is she trolling or just putting words together that rhyme with no regard to her own personal feeling? With Caution I didn't have to wonder if she was joking around. She either was being clever or heartfelt and I'm sad if she isn't evolving into more of what was so great about her last artistic output. I don't know man. Mariah grew so much lyrically, I just hope she's been encouraged to keep growing and not pressed to only write lite in the same vein of the latest two songs.

The lyric is expressing Mariah's determination to never be a side piece. She is going to be the official main squeeze of any man she is with. She's saying she will absolutely get the ring. And I guess she has a history of being proposed to, like Elizabeth Taylor. It could also be a subtle dig to Nick's harem, none of whom got the ring.
Given the declining marriage rates, it could also be viewed as a somewhat positive message to young girls. Just keep it nice and neat.
