When I saw you (110,948)

Oh dear. You went so straight that it turned into a circle.... and back to the Edwardian style (after the release of Migrate of course).

Her voice on Daydream is just like butter. Smooth, nuanced, powerful but never too showy. Daydream is pure perfection. In my humble opinion, "Butterfly" is her magnum opus though. That album could've been titled "Metamorphosis". When I saw Mariah on "Honey", so sexy and beutiful, for a moment I questioned my sexuality.

That song was one of the few I used to skip. Today I had a wakening about OSD. It could be the goat age that takes me. Haha.

I just played it and it took me through a time warp to when I was a tween. When I first got Daydream, I mostly listened to it on my Walkman. I used to lay in bed for hours listening to it while reading the lyrics trying to learn them. Or staring at her face because she was the most beautiful girl to me. I wondered what it must feel like to be her. Like, to be that beautiful and be able to sing like that.

I know, I know, but yesterday when I was driving home, I had this moment like that is the best voice ever on that album. So much better than the rest of the album.

I'm so glad we finally got a decent album cover. "MIAM" is probably her worst, it's absolutely horrible. I hope her next is even better. Album covers matter.

Daydream (110,944)
by Giovanni from USA
| |
|
|
Is definitely one of her best and what would have made it better is if "Slipping away" had made the album. I would have swapped out "Open arms" for "Slipping away" and I know Tommy was the reason why it didn't make the album. I love Journey but "Open arms" is the one song I don't care for. I also believe Daydream Mariah would have covered "At your best (you are love)" perfectly. "Fantasy" is one of her biggest hits but one I never play, I prefer playing "One sweet day" and "Always be my baby". I prefer Butterfly Mariah because of her raspy tone, also the "Butterfly" album cover is her best album cover in my opinion. I also loved what would have been "The art of letting go" album cover but Mariah changed it which was disappointing because it's a very nice album cover. I'm happy with the "Here for it all" album cover. She looks happy and like the legend she is. Mariah has such a nice smile.

When I Saw You has always been one of my favorites from "Daydream". It's incredible that Mariah, at such a young age, crafted lyrics with so much depth, beauty and emotional resonance. To me, she never quite captured that same poetic magic again after "Charmbracelet", with the exception of "Randy's Theme". The songs she wrote later on were still heartfelt, but their structures felt a bit simpler and less poetic by comparison.

It's crazy how great she looks now. She looks even better than 10 years ago. Hollywood is also having a moment right now with all the emerging technologies but Mariah always had a great base beauty anyway. She also seems more comfortable and playful here.

Penny Ford - I lose control (110,918)
by Bill from the UK
| |
|
|
I Lose Control is amazing and a long time ago an "AI" edit was floating, but it got embargoed to the point that people thought it was actually Mariah's demo, as it included high notes and ad libs not in the Penny version. It sounded incredible and every day I curse myself for not downloading a copy when I had the chance.
It was originally intended as Mariah's launch single, according to rumours. Everyone loved it but Mariah couldn't stand it, saying it was "stupid" and a "cheesy little uptempo ditty that I hated so much". This is why I think she never worked with NMW again, as she also didn't enjoy the "I Don't Wanna Cry" experience either, saying she wouldn't have titled the song that and that it went in a different direction to what she envisaged (more "Careless Whisper" vibe originally).
In the liner notes for the debut album, she thanks her then-manager Don Ienner "for not making me 'lose control'". Apparently he was the only one who had her back around not including the song on the album at all, let alone it being the lead single, and advocated with Mariah for "Vision of Love" instead.
Walden had reached out to Carey saying he still had the master tape for if she wanted to include it on The Rarities, but she never got back to him.
I wonder how differently things would have panned out? A one hit wonder? A no hit wonder? The mind boggles.

Great tidbit. "Cheesy little uptempo ditty that I hated so much" is rather true. It sounds like a theme song for a corny sitcom. It's like they tried to capture the soulful elements of the New Jack Swing era but failed halfway, and it turned a little white bread. "Another white girl trying to sing black" would have been justified. It's the same mold as Here We Go Round Again, but HWGRA is slightly better. I totally see why she scrapped the song and didn't want it to see the light of day. Mariah is the queen of roasting cheesy songs. "Corny like Fritos" probably annihilated Nick during the marriage.

We have to acknowledge Joachim being correct. He said, "After this period with our beloved Mariah be almost a living dead, she is too fatigued to even move around, expect a period from some time from now when she will be exuberant again."
I am so elated to find out Mariah didn't fully lose that personality. I'd say she is still a tiny bit stiff, but the spark is there and definitely held her own in a room of teenage boys full of energy. Her hosting a spelling bee and them not getting a single word right is so random and will forever send me. LMAO.

Random thought | Hunt for palatable ballads (110,917)
by BFF from United States

I think certain niche genres still leave room for ballads, but they are just not mainstream any more. I usually hear material like that on the local alternative and adult contemporary stations but not the pop, R&B or hip-hop stations. Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars doing "Die With a Smile" was a bit of an outlier - it went to #1 and has more a ballad/soft rock feel than 90 percent of what becomes popular on the radio. Leon Bridges dropped a single called "Hold On" that has an almost Otis Redding/Bill Withers feel to it, but he has always been very non-mainstream artist.

Here for it all/The Era Of Mi (110,925)
by Lambi from USA
| |
|
|
I love the title The Era Of Mi, it's another TEOM acronym like Bobby A said. And a clever way to up cycle Emancipation, just like what she did with E=MC2. Anything shorter and simplified is rather slick.
I think the Swifties will come for us though. The word "era" is very synonymous to Taylor, so that's why Mimi is just resorting to using it as an Instagram caption moment, or just a cute catchphrase moment. Not an album title.
And I also think Mariah just genuinely loves the song Here For It All. It describes where she's at in life so it's very fitting to make that the theme of the whole moment.
